Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

There is a very good highly recommended MNer who has a Will writing service (I'm not her!) can anyone remember who I'm thinking of? I think her username began with an M

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 08/03/2020 12:50

Oh that's going to annoy me all day if I can't think of it.

PS I'm definitely not saying people should start writing wills just because of CV, but I think everyone should have a will if possible anyway

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 12:59

I have no information on NI cases I’m afraid and the area .gov doc only covers England but “increasingling” is my favourite ever typo

AmelieTaylor · 08/03/2020 12:59

@Dennisreynoldsduster

I’m hiding my prep stuff to a certain degree, I’m not keeping anything in the rooms you can see from street level and I have some boxes in the lounge (not prepping but could be mistaken as such) that I’m planning on moving. I have easy stuff like loo rolls in the loft ( not 🥫though - it’s too heavy! And I can’t be bothered with cleaning the carpets 🤣) I’m planning on keeping prep stuff below the height you can see from the street in the spare room & the door closed. A couple of friends know I have stuff stocked in there - but I’d give all of them my last baked bean anyway.

I’m a bit wary of allowing strangers to see it though, so I might not get some work done that I was planning on, or I’ll move it into our bedroom - but right now I can’t face the thought 🤬

So far my Tesco deliveries have been delivered by different blokes, so I don’t yet feel too conspicuous, except I get heavy things delivered and it’s not easy to deliver here, so that might cause some ‘oh FFS I’ve got that bloody woman at x’ if they get together in the mornings (no idea if they do
or not 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Oh and a couple of companies have left deliveries on the front door step. Wilkinson’s left a box big enough for a couple of 5 year olds to climb in (due to their ridiculous packaging) and Gompels left an order that was pretty obviously ‘commercial cleaning’ type supplies.

🙄🙄

Monday 24th Feb Guardian article "People living in Italian towns under lockdown described a “surreal” and “fearful” atmosphere as a seventh person died of coronavirus on Monday and the number of confirmed cases rose to 229.

Eleven towns across Lombardy, where the outbreak emerged suddenly on Friday, and Veneto have been quarantined for at least the next 15 days as Italian authorities scramble to contain the worst outbreak of the virus in Europe and the third worst in the world."

YoursTunbridgeWells · 08/03/2020 13:12

I’m still here. I also did a write your own type will as want to leave everything to DH and it doesn’t work like that if you have kids and an estate over a certain amount.
Also wanted to state legal guardianship.

It’s clunky and unsophisticated so will get a better one done at some point but I took great care to get it witnessed and signed correctly.

I live 80 miles from DF and 130
From FIL. SIL lives 15 miles from FIL so I hope she will step up if required. But DF is an issue. He’s fit strong and probably healthy but over 70 you are bound to have issues. He’s not well prepped but could last a couple of weeks. For him it’s a case of what to do if he gets ill because he would never call a doctor until the point where he would think he was dying. DiS and I will have to keep an eye out and call daily.

IndecentFeminist · 08/03/2020 13:25

We are on the Isle of Wight and have just had our first confirmed case. Funnily enough Asda was out of a lot of stuff (loo rolls, soap, antibac, beans etc) but Aldi all full. 🤷

I work in my kids' school, and we're due to go on a couple of school trips to London in the next month...not at all sure what will happen there.

Luckily I've been a very low key prepper for a year or so so food wise we would be fine for a few weeks and have no need to panic. Money wise I'm nervous, DH has recently started a business and I am on a DMP with Stepchange, hopefully that won't be too affects.

Orchidflower1 · 08/03/2020 13:33

To all those who were reading the thread when I was bemoaning the fact my DM is not taking hand hygiene seriously ........ she’s sent DF out to her local supermarket as they have hand gel. DF returned with said gel ( 1 per customer), 1kg bag of rice, pasta and cous cous and some soap. I think they’re starting to understand👍🏻

Dm even berated me for only having 1 tin of beans left ( more coming this week!) 🤪

Pebble21uk · 08/03/2020 13:47

I'm sure this has been asked before so apologies - I have bought some 70% rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel to mix. Does anybody know what quantities I should use so it still has the correct alcohol contant? Thank you!

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 08/03/2020 13:53

@Cherrypi welcome to the home-ed community 😁 When you’re starting out/planning to home-ed for a short while, it can be nice to keep things relaxed and maybe do work in the form of projects rather than individual lessons. So the kids could choose a country each and plan their trip of a lifetime, for example. Lots of maths involved in costing out the trip, weighing up the best deals, insurance, different ways of travelling etc They could do a presentation of their findings and include info on climate, culture, important historical events, touristy things to do plus less touristy things to do, and the rest of the family vote on which trip they’d theoretically like to take. That would easily cover maths, geography, history, huge amounts of English skills, research skills, artistic presentation skills if they create a nice leaflet to accompany their presentation. And you wouldn’t need many resources apart from the Internet and basic craft stuff. Or if that’s too sensitive a topic at the moment, they could each design a household item to do their most hated chore for them and have to cost it out and market it (Dragons Den), or design their dream bedroom and cost out all the paint, new furniture, top-notch games console etc and do a persuasive presentation to persuade you to metaphorically part with your cash. Teens could actually write it as a persuasive piece so that they’re working towards GCSE skills whilst hopefully having a bit of fun. The actual topic they’re researching/presenting doesn’t really matter - it’s the skills they’re developing as they do it that are the important bit. Hope this helps.

Has anyone linked the close schools petition on here? It's doing OK 155,897 signature so far! Parliament will have to think about debating it at least.

Today is for chopping onion but dh got sandwich bags not small freezer bags (inspite of being explicitly asked not too)

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 13:57

Onions to freeze that is

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 08/03/2020 14:01

My freezer has been defrosted, cleaned and reorganised. I had no idea how much chicken we have! Made space to freeze a bit more batch cooking and I'm going to try freezing houmous and eggs (separately Grin) next.

I made a creamy chicken casserole a few weeks ago and DH had the foresight to freeze the remaining sauce, which means I almost forgive him for cooking a whole kilo of chicken for two of us last week.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 08/03/2020 14:03

Oh god, that's a big jump.

LightofMine · 08/03/2020 14:04

Pebble - I also have the 70% rubbing alcohol and am using as it is, rather than diluting the small amount of Aloe Vera you could add probably wouldn't really make a difference. It's actually not as harsh as I thought it would be and once its dried into my hands I use moisturiser if needed.

I have decanted some into a travel sized spray bottle and take that out with me.

Pebble21uk · 08/03/2020 14:06

Thanks LightofMine I was wondering about that but wondered if it would be too harsh on hands - but from what you've said I will go with it!

IndecentFeminist · 08/03/2020 14:10

We used to home ed so are well equipped mentally and stuff wise for if we have to have the older ones at home again, the uncertainty is the challenge for me.

Destinysdaughter · 08/03/2020 14:10

Its 273 cases in UK now.

bellinisurge · 08/03/2020 14:16

@LightofMine , me too. If I've stocked up on anything this past week it's Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream - on offer at our local Boots.

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 14:17

273 now.. I still can’t believe this..

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:18

I know what you mean @puppycorn
It feels like a film or something. What an absolute nightmare.

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 14:20

On Thursday morning it was 87 and on Sunday it has become 273..

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 14:26

I’m having the urge to prep for more weeks locked down..though I don’t think it will happen in the UK or would it?? This uncertainty is eating my brain off..dh’s job uncertain, my business is uncertain, school closures uncertain, lock down uncertain, everything feels so uncertain and fragile suddenly.. I just want this to get over.. this waiting game is just horrible..

BanKittenHeels · 08/03/2020 14:32

Thanks Neome that’s very interesting, so not long after they hit 229 cases they quarantined towns.
I suppose it was considered a regionalised epidemic at that stage.

The spread in the U.K. is much more varied and randomised thus far, seemingly that shows patterns of travel and a presumed lack of super spreading and virus shedding in one area.
