Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

(Except for those who need to self isolate to avoid infection for health reasons, but Italy style means we can deliver to family / friends / neighbours in those circumstances)

84TinsOfBeans · 08/03/2020 11:17

@NatoPMT see attached photos. The photos are directly under my message. Hope it helps.

You are probably seeing this thread on the 'I'm on' section. Yellow arrow in photo.

To see other recent active threads on many types of topics. Go to 'active'. Red arrow.

To search for a specific topic press on 'topics'. Green arrow.

To escape this thread and see what other threads (if any) you are on click on 'I'm on at the top left of screen. Black arrow.

One thing I wish I'd known earlier especially I'm fast paced threads like this is that you can bookmark the most recent comment you have read by swiping on that comment to the left where you press 'bookmark'. See second photo.

Yes I agree NATO Wuhan style welding into your home's was terrifying but I'd actually like to see the UK follow suit of Italy now. Before it gets worse, to prevent it getting worse. Strong but sensible action taken now could save lives and mitigate longer-term disruption, including economic.

I just posted this on the wrong thread 🤦🏻‍♀️

Financial prep help

We are in a sticky financial situation as we are both out of work at the moment and the market for me (main breadwinner) has totally dried up due to some tax changes for contractors and I suspect also companies aren't starting new non-essential projects and are battening down the hatches to focus on core work (and I work on projects).

@Puppycorn - I have the same IR35 issues as your DH...

Anyway...we are soon going to be in deep financial shit as we only had a couple of months salary and are nearly through that.

My list of things to do this week is below - any other ideas?

  • Get mortgage changed to interest only or payment holiday
  • Call Audi and see if they will take one of the cars back (unlikely) or give a payment holiday (not sure if they will)
  • See what we don't need or use that can be flogged on eBay
  • Look for some temp / part time work (won't be anywhere near my actual salary but every penny counts). Get DH to do the same.
  • Set up new business (coaching/hypnotherapy)
  • Cancel cleaner and sky sports (all other non essentials have already been cancelled)
Maltay · 08/03/2020 11:30

May I ask has anyone else thought about making a will? I don't have money/time to go to the solicitors but was hoping if anyone knew if one you wrote yourself is good enough?

wheresmymojo · 08/03/2020 11:30

Does anyone know where one advertises to get a lodger?

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 11:31

Same trying to prep- I’m not sure how the geography of cases would work on that - maybe restrict areas of community transmission

I think to a certain extent, the public has to panic before they accept restrictions so if the government restricted at 200+ cases they’d have a hard time justifying it to the “stop panicking” people - they almost need to get yo several thousand before the public say “quarantine now ffs!!”

wheresmymojo · 08/03/2020 11:31

@Maltay

It is but has to meet certain criteria (not too difficult). Am on a course at the moment but can come back later with the info if not answered by the time I get home this evening

Maltay · 08/03/2020 11:35

@wheresmymojo thanks for that. In regards to your situation of just be careful as mortgage repayment holidays can affect your credit rating

FuckThisWind · 08/03/2020 11:40

@wheresmymojo I'm looking at doing ebay and ending gym membership, also looking to go back to my qualified role in a 'consultancy / tutoring basis.

If I can make that work, I can walk away from my checkout.

Only other thing I can think of is seeing if they are recruiting for more 111 help advisors? Or other work from home advisory roles. Going to spend the afternoon doing a bit research.

JustVisiting9 · 08/03/2020 11:44

Good morning

I went called in at Tesco this morning, just to get petrol. I got there at about 9:30. The store does not open until 10 but the car park was full as though it was the weekend before Christmas. I don't normally go there on a Sunday so have no idea if this is normal.

The petrol station clerk mentioned that they're rationing goods in the store today to stop people buying all the loo roll and tins of soup.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2020 11:44

Try Gumtree wheresmymojo

WishThisWasLangClegGin · 08/03/2020 11:47

@wheresmymojo A good place to start is mymoneysteps.com.

You need to register but its free and impartial. Do the budget planner. be warned it's in depth so grab a cuppa and bank statements.

Once you have an overall picture of what your situation is you can then make decisions.

stepchange.org are also fantastic and will also give you advice and help you deal with all your creditors and sort priority bills.

Good luck!

16943389ao · 08/03/2020 11:52

Another thing to think about, I’ve just realised our MOT runs out next month so going to get the car booked in ASAP before things escalate.

16943389ao · 08/03/2020 11:55

@wheresmymojo also worth doing an overhaul of essential bills etc seeing if you can get better deals on essential outgoings such as gas and electric, broadband, mobiles etc. Martin Lewis website is great for guidance this. Assuming you’ve already applied for any council tax reduction you’re entitled to. Good luck.

wheresmymojo · 08/03/2020 12:03

All my bills are already on the cheapest options so have done that one already.

Home insurance is coming up to renewal so will check whether that is still okay or needs to be moved again.

wheresmymojo · 08/03/2020 12:05

Thanks for the stepchange, moneysteps and council tax advice - will follow up on those!

VenetoResident · 08/03/2020 12:14

*Where's my mojo
*

  • Get mortgage changed to interest only or payment holiday - remortgage? Much equity?
  • Call Audi and see if they will take one of the cars back (unlikely) or give a payment holiday (not sure if they will) find out what happens if you default on payments?
  • See what we don't need or use that can be flogged on eBay - local FB marketplace is quicker and no fees
  • Look for some temp / part time work (won't be anywhere near my actual salary but every penny counts). Get DH to do the same. Carer for elderly people? There will be lots trying to stay at home at the moment.
  • Set up new business (coaching/hypnotherapy) Anything you could tutor in if schools close?
  • Cancel cleaner and sky sports (all other non essentials have already been cancelled) any chance of reducing mobile phone packages down?
cuddles37 · 08/03/2020 12:24

Has anybody heard or seen where the confirmed cases are in Northern Ireland? My fourteen year old daughter is immunosuppressed and I am increasingling worried for her.

cuddles37 · 08/03/2020 12:26

Increasingly

BanKittenHeels · 08/03/2020 12:29

Does anyone remember what the numbers were like for Italy when they closed down whole towns?

Effieray · 08/03/2020 12:32

@wheresmymojo

I am looking into the online service fiverr for extra funds. Coaching services would work well on here.

https://www.fiverr.com/?utmsource=google&utmmmedium=cpc-brand&utmcampaign=GGUKBranddMobile&utmterm=one-fiverrr(exact)&utmcontent=AdID%5E198153644786%5EKeyword%5Efiverr%5EPlacement%5E%5EDevice%5Em&caid=665187824&agid=42637723636&addid=198153644786&kw=fiverr&lpcat=&gclid=CjwKCAiAzJLzBRAZEiwAmZb0akOT3SSZm8A7V1rCDcmT1dt54icKIzgc1MvP-DUmyf2kTdvkK1TpuhoCxIgQAvDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

There are also apparently lots of school children in China who want English lessons; especially now schools are closed.

Effieray · 08/03/2020 12:35

@maltay

I used a "fill-in-the-blanks" will pack I bought online. A family friend whose a solicitor checked it over and said it was fine. Got two people to witness it. But my situation is a simple one; if yours is more complicated I would recommend getting professional guidance.

Effieray · 08/03/2020 12:39

@wheresmymojo

Looks like the Fiverr link I gave you is if you want to purchase services but you can also sell your services on there.

AmelieTaylor · 08/03/2020 12:45

Just trying to catch up with the thread...

@FuckThisWind I’m glad your mums apt went well & hope the two scans this week go as well as possible 🌷

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring (live your user name!)

I am SO sorry to hear about your DH💐. Could you consider staying near the hospital? I love his positive attitude, but I think he should be convinced to spend the afternoons getting some rest and maybe some gentle exercise in the fresh air?! Hopefully that dept will be sanitised within an inch of its life & hopefully he will be sensible about hand hygiene. Take care of yourself in all of this x🌷

travelkers to ITALY

I’m usually very much ‘Live & let live’ but right now if anyone returned from
Italy & didn’t self isolate I’d happily report them & the DD’s friends Dad! Going to Italy right now is a massively stupid & selfish thing to do. Anyone returning should realky be quarantined in an official way in return IMO and no one should be going there except in exceptional circumstances (day dying relative -not with Covid ) but if I was in charge I’d be very draconian with the measure taken!

@ohwarren

Your garden sounds fab for the kids! I’m so glad you’ve pulled them out of school 😊

Yes there will need to be support for families where the parent/s are ‘essential services’ and financial help for many families, but we NEED to do it

Likewise stopping other large gatherings of people.

@OhYouBadBadKitten🥫

Well done in the carpet restoration! You can add ‘rest of the carpets’ onto you list of ‘if I’m isolating, but feel well’ jobs! 🤣 and keep the cabs somewhere less bothersome😊

Way too far behind to catch up with everyone individually, but 💐🎂😢🤬 🥇as appropriate!! & thank you all for being here!!

And A BigFat Welcome to all the newbies ☕️🍰😊

Oh & very envious of all the 🍅🌶🥒🥬 growing going on!!
