@HuggingAnIcePack887 it sounds like we're all going through a rough time of it! We're now 2.5hrs into a screaming fit. Seems in lots of pain and only wants the nipple

Ha, Ruby has also started biting when feeding and it bloody hurts. Feels like teeth 🧛‍♀️ nasty things 😂

I DREAD nights, as soon as it gets dark the worry kicks in. It sucks.

@kc92 we had a surprisingly good night with 2 wake ups from 10:30-6:30 but took a while to go back down etc. don't think we're be so lucky tonight.

They apparently start social smiling around 4 weeks so must be real ones!

@FuppinNora it went well. But, my mum and sister in law came for most the day. I did manage to get washed, dressed and had breakfast before she woke 🥳 success

@TripleESept24 advice I got was you can make them up and store in fridge, not fridge door. They need to be used within 24 hours. 4 hours out of fridge and 2 hours if they have drank from bottle.
As long as it is made with boiled water that is cooled for approx 30 mins to kill the bacteria.

I give the bottle at room temp so I don't need to heat it, I just take it out about half hour before feed due - my DS is every 3 hours to the minute no stretching out here! Then bring a bottle with me to bed and once he has drank that get the next.

They say ideally ro make fresh but not sure who has time for that!

So last night we made up 4 bottles and put in the fridge, my partner right now at 3am is tipping them away and making fresh!!!! As he said it says on the box (aptamil) not to make and store in fridge and to make fresh each time!

Like you said, who the hell has time for that!? At 3am now? You have to boil kettle and let it cool for half an hour..... Then the bottle to cool down....... @Demi55 are you seriously doing this at like 3am!?

Seems ridiculous to me and makes me want to just stick to the ready to feed stuff you pour straight into the bottle!!

I've just been googling, is something like this worth purchasing??

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nuby-RapidCool-Portable-Prepare-Dispenser/dp/B09VH5PCCJ/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

Honestly otherwise I'm sticking to the ready to feed bottles for night time because I seriously am struggling to function and couldn't be in the kitchen waiting for the kettle to cool etc, making a bottle fresh in the middle of the night is going to be like a 45 min at least process!? And I'm already exhausted 😵‍💫😭

And this is also why I wish my breastfeeding had gone well....... 😓😓😓

Hey! That’s exactly what we have, we use them through the night - we have the set with 2 rapid cools, so I make a bottle and feed it her in bed then use them twice through the night (once at around 1 am and then again at 4am) then the 6am morning feed i used the Tommy tippee prep machine, if you don’t mind the cost it’s definitely worth it! After one night we realised that we couldn’t make bottles up as you should. It’s now so easy! And tbh we’ve been gifted a second prep machine so I’m going to set that up upstairs so we can use that through the night instead.

these are exactly what I have and the rapid cool makes a 4 oz bottle in about 1 min, the prep machine is a similar time too

PinkWatermelon88 · 19/10/2024 07:49

Had our worst night yet, she just would not settle anywhere but in our arms. And so I slept for just 1h. I am absolute wrecked today. My mam is in hospice and we got the call an hour ago that she’s gone downhill. I’m just so tired of everything 💔

WinsandSam · 19/10/2024 08:17

@PinkWatermelon88 after an epic sleep Thursday we also had our worst one yet! She cried and would not be off the boob/put down for 6hrs 😭😭 I bed shared in the end and we got 4hrs in total but broken. Would you not bed share?

I'm so so sorry to hear that your mam has declined. Terrible sad for you all at an already very overwhelming time . Thinking of you all 💕

FuppinNora · 19/10/2024 10:00

@TripleESept24 Taken from NHS website and irish equivalent. Totally up to you and if your DH doesn't feel it is safe then best not 😀I asked the midwife when I was changing from the ready made was it OK and she said it was as long as I was firm with 24 hours. She said that's why it is not recommended anymore because people were loose with that rule. I only make them up 12 hours at a time. I had bought the nuby rapid but was told they are a bit like the prep machines not sure if they are 100%. I think it is just about doing what helps you the best there is just so much conflicting advice! Lots of people use the prep and nuby and have been fine🙂 I can't see what's wrong with the Nuby as it is pretty much a kettle.

@PinkWatermelon88 so sorry to hear about your Mam, such a difficult time, I've been there and it is very stressful without having a newborn thrown innmix.

@WinsAndSam getting washed AND dressed?! Sounds like you had a great day!!

My nap idea kind paid off, he started to fall into a deep asleep again at 4.30 so I woke him and gave him a bath to drag him out. This morning he woke at 630am which feels better than 5.30am. Going to try it again today. He seems much more settled the last 2 days so hopefully we are coming out of the growth spurt cause it was bloody hell.

@FuppinNora tbh we had only made 12 hours worth as well! I'm sure they'd of been fine!! I'm thinking of buying the nuby for night feeds or I'll just carry on with ready to feed bottles at night.......!! Finding formula feeding much more work 😓🥺 bloody boobs I wish they would just start producing more milk 🥺😓

TripleESept24 · 19/10/2024 12:00

Midwife has just been out (we are still having daily weights due to her weight loss) 7 lbs 15oz today around 5% off birth weight .... If she keeps going should be back at her birth weight by end of next week!

Re the formula, This midwife advised and told me that they do need to be made fresh! She said the nuby rapid cool is worth a go though or just stick to the ready to pour ones for the night feeds

kc92 · 19/10/2024 12:25

@PinkWatermelon88 I'm so sorry to hear that. 💔 Not the day you want to face after a broken night's sleep. We're here if you need to vent!

@WinsandSam sounds like a good first day! Amazing to have company to get you through.

@FuppinNora think I might give that nap stretching a try today too. He's usually quite wakey in the evenings and I leave him with his dad while I go up to bed but think I need to start structuring the times a bit better and get us in to a routine. He's 6 weeks today and this is when I tried to get serious about routine with his brother - though he never slept more than 90 minutes at a time until he was 6 months. 🫠

@TripleESept24 think most people I know do the bottles in advance or use prep machines - cannot imagine boiling the kettle at that hour of the night!!

TripleESept24 · 19/10/2024 12:50

@kc92 @FuppinNora well my other half is adamant to make them fresh thinks the nuby and the prep machine are unnecessary and he is going to be making them fresh ..... Good luck to him!! Because I won't be doing that in the middle of the night I'll be getting more ready to feed/pour bottles

Demi55 · 19/10/2024 13:28

@TripleESept24 honestly the nubys are fantastic for night and out and about, it’s probably the best thing we’ve bought for Violet! Get them and I’m sure your partner will change his mind. It’s as good as fresh as you are basically using boiling water. The only thing that’s changes it take it takes about 1-2 mins to cool (if he wants to do it straight from the kettle) rather than like 45 mins

FuppinNora · 19/10/2024 16:56

@TripleESept24 sounds like you have a human prep machine 😀 all the better.

Pineapplefizzz · 19/10/2024 21:24

@TripleESept24 Yeah I’ve always been under the impression that formula needs to be fresh. Can you set an alarm to wake jo and boil the kettle around 30ish mins before you think she might wake up? Or are her wake ups all over the place?? X

Pineapplefizzz · 19/10/2024 21:26

@TripleESept24 Or can you just make the bottle fresh when she wakes up and run the bottle under a cold tap? That’s how we used to do it

or put freshly boiled water in a flask and use that, cool it down slightly when needed

Decaffe · 20/10/2024 02:38

Oh, I thought it had gone quiet!

How is everyone doing?

Decaffe · 20/10/2024 02:47

Just had a look through the thread, I am sorry to hear about your mum @PinkWatermelon88 🩷

It seems like everyone’s babies are sleeping for long stretches through the night… making me wonder if we’re doing something wrong…! 4.5 weeks old and we are still having to co-sleep; he’ll wake approx every 1.5 hours for a feed.

Is anyone else having to co-sleep? Has your crib-refuser shown any signs of accepting going down in the crib? Have you tried anything that’s helped them go down into a crib or Moses basket etc?!

PinkWatermelon88 · 20/10/2024 05:43

Thanks for the kindness friends. It’s so hard. I thought having a terminally ill mam while pregnant was hard, it’s not as hard as having a newborn and a terminally ill mam. I’ve stayed with her in hospice over the last 24h and my partner and his sisters have had my girls. The newborn will take formula thank goodness so she’s had loads of bottles and I’ve pumped.

@Decaffe our sleep has gone downhill thr last few nights too, thr bones of a week maybe. Not only is she now refusing the cot but she’s also waking more frequent. I’m just riding the wave of exhaustion. I cosleep out of desperation but often she still only wants to be held. Funny enough when my SIL was minding her last night she got her down in the cot for hours WITH A DUMMY!!!! I could never get her to take a dummy so I’m feeling played right now hahaha.

I think the babies are just being babies. I read their circadian rhythm doesn’t kick in till 4m and so we’ve a few months of challenge ahead of us yet before hopefully seeing some light.

snug those babies extra tight friends. There’s nothing like a mamas love x

WinsandSam · 20/10/2024 06:04

@Decaffe it's a mixed bag here!! Some nights we co sleep as she will not be put in her cot. Or will go in and wake screaming when she realises. Other times she'll go in there and sleep for 3hrs. There is nothing we do differently, just random! Think they just need/want warmth and cuddles.. sure there is nothing you're doing wrong or different to the rest of us

TripleESept24 · 20/10/2024 07:15

@Pineapplefizzz I have just bought the nuby rapidcool!!

We are doing fresh, I'm setting alarm, boiling kettle leaving about 10-15 mins then making up and running under cold water/sitting in bowl of cold water.... Hoping the rapid cool will just speed things up!

kc92 · 20/10/2024 10:16

@Decaffe definitely not doing anything wrong, sleep is total luck of the draw for babies! Mine is a relatively good sleeper but he's been sneaking in to the bed more and more. Come 5am there's not a chance he wants to be alone in his crib. Bought a giant bed rail off Amazon last week because I knew this was coming. 🤣

@PinkWatermelon88 that sounds so so tough. Your mum will be glad to have you with her, there really is nothing like a mama's love. 🩷 Hope you have someone to make you a strong cup of tea right now.

I would be inviting the SIL to live with me permanently if she has that magic touch too!

Has anyone joined the WhatsApp group? I joined the FB one but saw 92 members and don't think I'd keep up with the volume of messages if they're all active. 😅

WinsandSam · 20/10/2024 11:10

@kc92 I need to get a bed rail too 😂 wasn't the plan but we're 50/50 crib or bed.

Re WhatsApp group I have rejoined.. but sometimes there are over 400 messages a day! So depends what you're looking for.

FuppinNora · 20/10/2024 12:40

@Decaffe as others have said I think it is just luck! I noticed with mine he needs to be warm - at the start I was afraid of overheating him and actually think he was getting cold so even though he had a sleep bag I now also swaddle him in a large light muslin. It also helps the startle reflex.

Well after my post yesterday it all went to shit! He cried for approx 2 hours and my patience was really at an all time low. We were both wiped out come 7pm when he fell asleep, I just lay in the darkened room for about 2 hours after.

Today I am taking the bull by the horns and going to try getting him to nap in buggy. I've put the pushchair part on instead of carrycot as I feel he doesn't like not seeing out/me and also lying flat. I've been watching his wake windows on napper and rocking him until drowsy, putting him in pushchair and still tapping and shushing him until he drifts off. We are on nap three now and so far it has worked to an extent - 1st nap an hour, 2nd nap 20 mins and he is currently asleep now. I'm taking it as a win!

Maybe we could start a smaller WhatsApp, 400 msg wow!

FuppinNora · 20/10/2024 12:41

Also just to add the naps in the buggy is me sitting by it and shushing him back to sleep if he starts to wake. I'm hoping that will eventually stop 😂
