@Wheeeeee sorry to hear you've had a rocky start, we have had a very similar experience low birth weight, big weight loss and then very slow weight gain. Finally got back to birth weight at 28 days. No tongue tie, instead she has a high pallet and can't maintain suction. Spending all my time expressing to top up baby and found it all very isolating to the point I've now been diagnosed with postnatal depression.

Could I join the WhatsApp group? No mum friends with young children here either

Wheeeeee · 18/07/2024 14:08

@15rainbow sorry to hear you've been struggling too. I feel like it's really tough when what should be the most basic thing, i e. feeding your baby, becomes so fraught with difficulties.

Triple feeding is just exhausting and we had no real support from the healthcare professionals in trying to preserve breastfeeding - quite the opposite in one case from someone who clearly wanted me just to give formula and totally dismissed tongue tie as a possible reason for the issue without even examining him. Fortunately feeding does seem to be improving for us but the whole experience has left me feeling very fragile and anxious Sad

@Wheeeeee @15rainbow we also had a weight loss after birth, just over 10 percent and then weight was static and wouldn’t go up. We had to go back to children’s day unit multiple times for checks after initial discharge from hospital. Our son had jaundice (similar to first son) but didn’t need phototherapy and it cleared in the end on its own. We were given a feeding plan to top up breastfeeding with expressed milk and/or formula so we could be sure about the amounts and that he was getting enough. I was quite upset about it at first but had a really great nurse at the day unit who helped and said it’s actually common because it takes time for milk to come in plus when breastfeeding you just don’t know the amount the baby is actually taking. The weight then started going up and we got to birth weight at 15 days. I’m still giving some formula here and there if I feel like baby is wanting more but I’m no longer measuring or tracking the amounts. I’m a bit lazy to express, I find it a bit stressful. With my first son I went back to work at 5 months and used to express at work continuing breastfeeding until he was one but this time I’m not really liking the expressing so hence have given some formula as needed.

My son is seven weeks now and we went on holiday last week and just came back yesterday. We went to a small island Porto Santo near Madeira. It was lovely and not too hot only about 25 degrees. Flight was three hours. Obviously baby hasn’t been vaccinated yet so we were super careful about being near people etc but everything went really well. Flight was fine, he slept 2 out of the 3 hours on the way there and the entire flight on the way back. We couldn’t even get seats together so I was by myself with the baby on the way there and felt like an absolute superstar after the flight as it went so well. It was a resort and I took it so easy just enjoying the warm weather, restaurant food and someone else making the bed! It was so lovely. My husband and son did more sports, beach and activities and baby and I just chilled! Hope everyone is doing well 😊

@May5th your holiday sounds wonderful and you're amazing for even attempting it! I'm barely making it into town some days 😂

MsNeis · 03/08/2024 10:01

Hello everyone! It's been ages since the last time I posted, but I've been reading all your messages!
My daugther came to the world after an induction that lasted two days: the delivery was so beautiful!! And she came after a few pushes (I still don't know how I could do this, hahaha!).
She's a dream come true, she is 💖
First weeks were very hard, because we had no support and school had just ended, so we struggled trying to be present with our first born. A lot of guilt feelings on my part (that deserves a thread of its own).
A month and a half later, poor sleep and chaos are still here daily, but I think I'm starting to see the light 😅

Sending love to you all!

FantasticMissFox · 08/08/2024 10:05

@MsNeis hope you're hanging in there. We're getting some longer stints at night (babe is 9 weeks). Makes such a difference, Flowers

oop · 08/08/2024 11:50

Congrats @MsNeis !

Just to mention again that we have a lovely supportive active WhatsApp group now with ladies from this thread. If anyone wants to join just message me your phone number privately and I'll add you in. Lots of middle of the night feeding chat!
