Is anyone else still able to sleep on their stomach? I'm 20 weeks today with my first (with another girl to add to the tally!) and although I'm beginning to show a bit I can still quite happily sleep on my stomach (which is great as it's my preferred position). I've googled and it says it's fine to do for as long as it's physically comfortable, but I definitely expected to be needing a pregnancy pillow and unable to by this point!

Fizzybubblegumbottles · 23/02/2022 18:35

@heya101 I am on my third pregnancy and I’m still able to sleep on my stomach which I do sometimes and don’t need a pregnancy pillow I am 20+5 and know baby is fine as feel plenty of movement which I have done since 14.5 weeks (don’t know the gender but think it’s a boy as my 20 week scan is identical to its brother’s scan!)

KizboBaggins · 23/02/2022 19:03

@heya101 I'm 18 weeks and can still sleep on my stomach. Side is more natural for me, but there's something so comfy about being on my stomach with one leg bent and shifted up the bed (that description makes more sense in my head haha)

I heard it's advisable to sleep on your left side eventually, but not sure when you're supposed to start doing that? Maybe third trimester?

DueinJuly22 · 23/02/2022 19:27

Hi, I'm a bit late to the party! Due end of July with baby number 3, a little girl. 18 weeks and paranoid as not felt any movement yet.

strawberrysummer19 · 23/02/2022 19:46

@DueinJuly22 I haven't felt any real movement yet and I'm 18+1 I'm sure I've felt little flutters here and there but not sure
I had a gender scan Saturday and they said I have an anterior placenta which may be why as it's a bit more cushioned
So hoping for some real movements SOON ! X

DueinJuly22 · 23/02/2022 19:50

@strawberrysummer19 it's so frustrating isn't it! I had a scan and mine is at the back for the first time! All my other pregnancies I've had an anterior placenta! I was really hoping this time I'd feel movement earlier!

strawberrysummer19 · 23/02/2022 19:52

@DueinJuly22 so frustrating! I'm constantly stopping and thinking is that movement? And then nothing
But I'm definitely getting bigger and all was good Saturday and measuring on the dot
I have my 20 week scan in 2 weeks so hoping by then will feel movement ! X

CaptainCarp · 23/02/2022 20:31

@DueinJuly22 i literally started feeling movements the evening after my 20wk scan when I was 20+4!
I had started getting worried myself but baby was all good.

I'm naturally a side sleeper but I'd say as long as you're comfortable you should be OK sleeping however you want. Why is the left side recommended?

OP posts:
SamanthaVimes · 23/02/2022 20:37

@CaptainCarp left side is ideal because of where blood vessels are internally (I think the aorta comes out of your heart on the left?) but either side is fine for sleeping. The reason they say not to sleep on your back is the weight of the baby as it gets bigger can put pressure on blood vessels and restrict blood flow although my midwife from last time said if you wake up on your back don’t worry, just move back to your side before going back to sleep

SamanthaVimes · 23/02/2022 20:39

I’ve got my scan tomorrow but all of a sudden I feel really pregnant and quite uncomfortable. I’ve taken today off work as I’ve felt so rubbish.

Hope I don’t feel like like this for the next 20 weeks!!

Mattieandmummy · 23/02/2022 20:39

@CaptainCarp it's something to do with there being a large blood vessel not being squished if you lie on your left hand side but it can't be that super important as we'd be extinct otherwise.

Mattieandmummy · 23/02/2022 20:43

Ah @SamanthaVimes got there first with a much better answer than me! Good luck for your scan tomorrow @SamanthaVimes, mine is next Tuesday and it's on my mind too.

CaptainCarp · 23/02/2022 20:55

@SamanthaVimes & @Mattieandmummy thank you both. I do tend to sleep more on my left as I've got an old shoulder injury on the right which means my arm goes numb.

Your extinct comment did make me laugh though. When you look at all the "rules" in pregnancy its sometimes a wonder we survived as a race at all 😂

I have a feeling we have a baby girl but the way I am carrying so many people have told me im having a boy! So we will see 😂
Im getting the usual scanxiety for next weeks 20 week scan, although my tummy is definitely growing my bump isnt obvious and so many people have told me they had no idea! Also felt strange sensations but not sure if its movement just like some of you ladies. I dont know if its growing uterus, my baby or my bowels! 😂😬 Lookong forward to seeing the little mystery bean

CaptainCarp · 23/02/2022 21:01

@JJ1992 when I told everyone at work they were surprised as they couldn't tell! Definitely getting a baby bump now though.

SamanthaVimes · 23/02/2022 21:05

@JJ1992 I get scanxiety too, although not quite so bad this time as with my first pregnancy. I’ve taken tomorrow off work as holiday as I’ll be no use and won’t be able to concentrate all day no matter what happens!

JJ1992 · 23/02/2022 21:22

@samanthavimes thats a good idea then your mind will be fully focused on little baby 💕 hope you can manage to sleep tonight!

@CaptainCarp ive never been so excited to gain a tummy! 😂😂

Capricorn8990 · 23/02/2022 22:34

So nice to hear of everyone finding out the sex of their baby! So lovely to have surprises too.

Does anyone get little electric shock sensations in their lower stomach? I've been getting them and I'm 20+5! Just wondered what this was..

paintfairy · 23/02/2022 22:46

@Capricorn8990 probably the baby? When I feel it move its like little pulses? Took me ages to realise its that. 🤣
@heya101 I have never slept on my stomach but although I look fat I probably still could? I use a pregnancy pillow but more for my hips and back. Don't need one for the bump yet. I'm 18 weeks.

I'm second pregnancy and definite bump- popped early - but use pillow similarly for my hips and back not my bump. Loved my dreamgenii first pregnancy and whacked it out very early on this one lol

Capricorn8990 · 24/02/2022 14:03

@paintfairy ohh I didn't think it would feel like that! Could well be xx

paintfairy · 24/02/2022 16:34

@Capricorn8990 no i didn't either. Wasn't sure. But it's happened too many times though now so it's got to be that. Its really subtle in the beginning so as it gets more only then will you look back and be like ahhhh. 🤣

Porridgeislife · 24/02/2022 17:04

@Capricorn8990 @paintfairy I was getting them too but not clocking it was the baby, I thought it was just my digestion Grin

Last week I was awake very early and decided to put my hand on my lower tummy to see if I could feel her. She was helpfully kicking away and that was the AHA moment. Over this week I’ve just started to identify kicks. She’s very low, down between my hips really.
