@paintfairy ooo the snuzpod looks lovely! I'm trying to do everything second hand also, except for bedding/mattress, car seat(s) too. I have no idea what I'm looking at with car seats... there's SO many and they're pretty expensive, and we'll also need two... We have a silver cross buggy that my mum has bought second hand for us, but it looks massive and I can't see me lugging it around in the car, so guessing we'll need some other kind of pram/buggy for days out... it's so hard to know what to get! And even harder waiting for 20 week scan to buy anything haha. I've been busying myself with repainting some unused furniture to put in the nursery ... just want to buy things though!

CaptainCarp · 20/02/2022 17:30

@paintfairy I was looking at the joie or the cybex sirona but we went to boots yesterday & had a quick look at the car seats & the Cybex said it was from 3 months. I don't really want to pay for a carrycot style to use for 3 months.

@CaptainCarp we have the cybex cloud z that we’ve used with DD1, we’re going to get the sirona for her to go in soon and give the cloud z to the new one. The swivel base is so helpful!

Effram · 20/02/2022 19:12

@SamanthaVimes I think it's a lovely age gap, there is 25 months between my first two and there will be 20/21 with this one! My first 2 were actually due on the same day!

I think in general the only thing you 'should' get new is car seats (unless it's from someone incredibly trusted, any seat that's been in an accident or even just dropped is not safe so I wouldn't get from marketplace etc) and then new mattresses for cribs/cots ( even if used with a sibling).

We have a cybex sirona which is great, but we only got it when he grew out of the infant carrier which last until around 12 months. I know lots of the 360 ones say from birth but often it's not recommended until they're a bit bigger. My 2nd is now in the sirona and my eldest (3.5) is in an axkid minikin. Unsure how we are going to fit 3 car seats in we will just cross that bridge when we get there! there are some good fb car seat advice groups that are worth checking out. In general, infant car seats are the safest so you are best getting a good one of those and not worrying until later about the next one! Joie is a good brand though.

Haven't bought anything for this baby yet, work is so intense there hasn't been time and I'm sure we will muddle through. My first was a month early and we were not at all ready and had to Amazon prime a carseat to the hospital haha!

SamanthaVimes · 20/02/2022 19:22

@Effram fingers crossed it will be a good gap. There’s 23 months between new and my sisters and we get on really well as grown ups (the less said about her stealing my clothes as a teenager the better though! Grin)

ShellUK09 · 21/02/2022 09:46

I had a private scan at the weekend at 18 weeks 5 to find out the baby's gender and we were told we are having a baby girl 💕 I already suspected this due to the horrendous sickness I had at the beginning and the midwife at the 16 week appointment also mentioned she thought I was having a girl due to the sound of the heartbeat, no idea how she knew that but sometimes old wives tales are right! My NHS 20 week scan is only next Monday so I could have waited really, but it's been so nice focusing on one gender for name ideas now. All feels real again ☺️

strawberrysummer19 · 21/02/2022 10:35

@ShellUK09 congratulations!!

I'm also having a girl - we did a little gender reveal for family yesterday with a confetti cannon after our scan Saturday

X

ShellUK09 · 21/02/2022 10:46

@strawberrysummer19 awww that's lovely 🥰 we are waiting until after the NHS scan to tell everyone although we have told close family and bought our first baby outfit x

ChinChilly · 21/02/2022 10:50

It feels like we're very baby girl heavy on this thread atm!! Congratulations to everyone finding out babies gender!

I'd love to get my hands on some 2nd hand bargains but everybody selling things where I am seems to be asking for not far off retail for things 🤔 I think we'll end up buying most bits new, plus its the first grand baby on both sides so I can imagine we'll end up with alot of gifts! Plus ideally I want a small age gap between our children (maybe crazy i know) so I think we'll get our use out of stuff.

paintfairy · 21/02/2022 12:06

@CaptainCarp @Effram oh god. We've not looked at seats yet but I'm hoping we can find a from birth one that's a 360. I'll not have one with a travel system or anything to use temporarily so I'm going to have to buy something.
@KizboBaggins I'm used to lumping stuff about but yeah if it's too cumbersome I think it's going to just make life difficult. We looked at the ocarro and whilst I thought it looked really fancy, the weight of it i think ultimately would end up annoying.

All these girl scans can't be right is all I can think. 🤣 I'm certainly not rushing to buy anything pink. Either that or there's some weird thing happening in the world where no boys will be born any more. 🧐 We've not actually told anyone we went for the gender scan, I'm reserving judgement.

ShellUK09 · 21/02/2022 12:10

@ChinChilly yeah it does feel girl heavy! There's two other women at my work who are also having girls! My partner used to talk about taking the child to football matches etc, but he will have to change his mindset now! Same here, I think we will get a lot of presents as my parents are excited and it is their first grandchild but we are starting shopping properly next week 😊

ChinChilly · 21/02/2022 12:28

@ShellUK09 my OH has always talked about father and son things like footballs matches too so same here although my friend has 3 boys and not one of them is interested in football but her daughter loves it!

CaptainCarp · 21/02/2022 13:17

@ShellUK09 don't be too hasty discounting the football matches! I was the 1 who played in the Saturday league not my brother Wink

@paintfairy I briefly looked as i knew i wanted 1 after seeing the 1 my niece had in my parents car.
Thought we'd have a quick look "in real life" as we were already in boots. The joie 360 I-size spin is from birth.

OP posts:
KizboBaggins · 21/02/2022 13:37

@CaptainCarp @ShellUK09 same here! I played football for over 20 years and only just retired before TTC. So if anyone will be taking our LO to matches it will be me! DH is more of a gamer.

Congratulations to everyone finding out their baby's sex the past few days! Definitely girl heavy. @paintfairy perhaps you're right and the time has come for us females to live alone as the self sufficient sex 😅

ShellUK09 · 21/02/2022 13:54

@CaptainCarp @KizboBaggins @ChinChilly haha very true, I shouldn't discount the football just yet!

I'm definitely waiting for the NHS 20 week scan to tell anyone else about the gender though and not mentioning at the next scan that we have already found out, just so we have had two opinions!

paintfairy · 21/02/2022 13:56

@CaptainCarp I didn't realise they don't lift out of the car. Neither did I realise that all seats don't fit all cars? Why is everything so complicated!?

Mads96 · 21/02/2022 21:05

Hi all! Hope you're all well 😊
I have the joie 360 spin but remembered they ask you to bring the car seat up and put baby in before leaving the hospital. As my car seat is isofix it obviously cannot be used to carry baby around in as it stays in the car. Will I have to buy another car seat with the handle? Sorry could be a silly question 🙈

paintfairy · 21/02/2022 21:10

@Mads96 not a silly question as I actually wondered the same thing!

kiwi17 · 21/02/2022 21:44

Isofix car seats don't necessarily have to stay in the car - we have a cosatto one that clicks onto the isofix base. The base stays in the car but you can lift the seat in and out. Not sure about the 360 ones though. I also don't think with our first child anyone asked to see the car seat or checked we had one before we left hospital...

Effram · 22/02/2022 11:45

The 360 ones will be fixed to the base so you can only remove with the isofix base. The infant carriers click into the base so you can take them out which can be handy if they're sleeping as you can take them into the house/put onto travel system if you have that.

They do say from birth and technically you can use them and they come with inserts, but generally it's harder to get a good fit until baby is a bit bigger, especially if they are born a bit smaller - just something to be aware of! We actually only just got a car so just had an infant carrier that we used for parents'/hire cars etc, then we had to get the next seat (got a 360) when my eldest was around 13 months. It was a pain until we had our own car mainly because it took up so much space in the house haha! it was easy to put in and out but the seat itself weighed about 15kg because of being connected with the base too. So it's easier if they just live in there!

yeah also there is always this thing that everyone says hospital staff say you 'have' to have a car seat to be discharged but it's not the law... I mean, you can go home on the bus or walk if you want to and you wouldn't need a carseat for that, and if it's one set up in the car you can just carry baby to it there! they are not trained in carseat safety anyway.

SPea · 22/02/2022 18:34

Hey all, here to break the girl trend, we're having a boy! Had my 20 week scan today and all good except for my placenta being a bit too low, but the sonographer didn't seem to be too worried and has just set another scan at 32 weeks to check progress. It's all getting very real now!

KizboBaggins · 22/02/2022 19:01

Congratulations @SPea ! Fingers crossed for placenta moving by your 32 week scan. I think I read it's very rare for it not to move during that time, is that right? Fingers crossed for you anyway!

Newmumatlast · 22/02/2022 22:54

I had an 18wk sex scan at the weekend and am having a boy too so there's another one to add to the thread! I already have a girl and so much stuff for her I can't use again though I went overboard (she was IVF long awaited) and reckon I've plenty of gender neutral/boy suitable clothes too. Have boxes up my loft to sort!!! Already sorted two big bags to get rid of and have 2 drawers to keep for him and they're only ages 12mth to 2 eek.
SPea · 23/02/2022 16:12

Thanks both! @KizboBaggins I'm hoping so, the Sonographer said it was 1cm away when it needs to be at least 2cm, so hoping it will shift over the next few months! Otherwise I think it mostly means that I wouldn't be able to opt for a natural birth and would have to have a Cesarean, not sure how I feel about that, but not overly worried at the moment.

Congratulations @Newmumatlast! Gosh I haven't even thought about clothes yet, this is my first, so going to be relying on friends and family to tell me how much I need to buy!

paintfairy · 23/02/2022 17:29

I'm pleased about the boys! It was beginning to be weird. 🤣
