Hi everyone, I’m a first year student midwife, I’m female and I’m attracted to women. I’m so grateful to have gotten my place at uni, never been happier, and I can’t wait to start my journey.
However, in the past few months I’ve spoken to old friends from school and many were shocked that someone who is gay is going into this profession. Many people have said it’s as weird as having a male midwife, some have straight up called it a bit creepy and that they would request someone else.
I’d never thought about it in any such way until this started and honestly it’s really shaken me and I want to know people opinions.
Would you not want me in the room? What comes to mind when you read this?

Your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability to do the job. I would not have a male midwife though, and they're are so many male nurses being struck off in portion to female nurses for inappropriate behaviour it gives me cause for concern

The irony, sexuality has nothing do with your ability to do the job but your gender does.

Do you have a source to back up your claims about more male nurses being struck off for inapproriate behaviour?

Sexuality has nothing to do with your job but your sex does . That's not ironic it's a fact . Gender has nothing to do with anything

Have you actually read that link?
"A male nurse manager at one trust told Nursing Times: “I can’t believe men are more naughty than women. Historically most of the men in nursing have been in the mental health or learning difficulties sectors, around 70 per cent. It would be interesting if the NMC could break this down by area of practice.”

The NMC figures do not include which sector of the NHS allegations came from so it is not possible to tell if the disproportionate number of male nurses receiving sanctions is due to any disproportionate number of complaints coming from mental health settings, for example.
The NMC said because it had no “robust evidence” on the gender difference “it would be unwise for anyone to draw a conclusion that male nurses pose a higher risk to patients than female nurses”."

Carriemac · 20/02/2024 11:20

NMC is covering its ass. And male midwives have a much higher number of complaints than females proportionally .

And sorry this is derailing the OP. No one should care about your sexuality

Firsttimebabymama · 20/02/2024 15:18

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

AliceS1994 · 20/02/2024 22:03

I would never thing for a second that it would be inappropriate for a gay woman to be a midwife how bizarre?! I can see why that might be a hurtful comment and youre right to be offended.

Congratulations and good luck

I think if someone is going through labour pains and needs support delivering their baby. the last thing on their mind is going to be the sexual orientation of their midwife.

MixedCouple · 20/02/2024 23:59

Well firstly your patients wouldn't know as that's not the sort of thing you discuss. I don't know any personal details of midwives I have seen and I want to keep it that way. For professional registration sake keep professional.
As a former HCP I would never discuss private matters with patients or my personal life and choices.

No issue as long as you remain professional and as we expect from everyone not to abuse your position on with vulnerable people.

For religious reasons I wouldn't see any male health care providers UNLESS in absolute emergencies.
I have seen a lot of cases of Male staff abusing their position with vulnerable patients. Drs, Nurses and Radiographers etc. And I worked for the NHS so I know. I have also worked in a position where I had access to GMC and NMC and seen to many investigations majority involving male staff.

Awful! What kind of things have you seen?

I like women purely because they know how what a vagina is and can empathise!

but I did have a male gynae once and he was so lovely.

Many people are shocked, have called it weird…creepy..they wouldn’t want me in the room

Really? You’ve spoken to “Many people” in the space of a few weeks who have told you it’s creepy and they wouldn’t want you as a midwife?

This is beyond homophobia- Their assumption being that you’re a sexual predator or pervert.

Im struggling to believe you’ve had many people in your social circle make this comment to you. Hmm

Are these people you grew up with from a remote area where homophobia is still rife or are they influenced by religious doctrine?

Why do you think your sample group’s opinion differs so vastly to the overwhelming popular opinion on here?
