Gay Midwives

Hi everyone, I’m a first year student midwife, I’m female and I’m attracted to women. I’m so grateful to have gotten my place at uni, never been happier, and I can’t wait to start my journey.
However, in the past few months I’ve spoken to old friends from school and many were shocked that someone who is gay is going into this profession. Many people have said it’s as weird as having a male midwife, some have straight up called it a bit creepy and that they would request someone else.
I’d never thought about it in any such way until this started and honestly it’s really shaken me and I want to know people opinions.
Would you not want me in the room? What comes to mind when you read this?

I'm glad that you've been reassured by this thread.
Your friends might just be immature arseholes, but their homophobic attitude sucks anyway, so I doubt they're much use as long term friends :(

Good luck with your training and your future!

Equating lesbian with male is really weird. It isn’t because men are sexually attracted to women that they are a threat, men are frequently violent to women they don’t want to have sex with and to other men. I wouldn’t want a male midwife, nurse or doctor if given the choice but idgaf if the woman giving me a smear test or helping me birth my baby is gay. If anything I’d prefer it, if for some reason I knew, as she’d be less likely to suffer the internalised misogyny that can make some female hcps misogynistically themselves.

Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone · 08/10/2020 08:08

Nothing wrong with gay midwives just like there is nothing wrong with male midwives. And to request not having either should be seen as bad as not wanting a black midwife.

Sls668 · 08/10/2020 08:09

I can’t say I’d ever even consider the sexuality of my midwife, doctor or nurse. It’s just not something that would ever even enter my head

WinterRose92 · 08/10/2020 08:16

That’s absolutely ridiculous! It would never even occur to me to even think about it.
I’m just bloody glad there are midwives to help us through it!

Really disagree with this. There are plenty of legitimate reasons why a woman might not want to have intimate examinations done by a man. You simply can’t equate that with racism.

Hi,
wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I'm not even sure how I would actually know either. There was a male trainee midwife on the ward when I was induced. I felt really bad when I refused to let him do an internal as I know everyone has to learn but as the MW training him had just performed a stealth sweep which bloomin hurt, nobody was going near me after that.x

DiabeticFirstBaby · 08/10/2020 08:43

As long as you make me feel safe and confident that you know what you are doing then that's all I would want. Your friends don't really sound very nice.

happymummy12345 · 08/10/2020 09:09

As long as the person is doing their job right I honestly don't see how or why the sexuality of any healthcare worker is relevant at all? Just the same as the race, religion or background of a person isn't or shouldn't be relevant

Bollocks! Comparing refusing someone because of the colour of their skin to refusing someone because of their sex, is both downplaying racism and the rights of women to feelings of dignity, safety and respect. Using black peoples as a gotcha is bloody racist.
DeliciouslyFemale · 08/10/2020 09:21

Silly me. Listen up women, the middle aged white man, Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone says you’re not permitted to ask for a female member of staff. You, Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone are often on threads, sharing your less than subtle views on racism and feminism. Your comment makes sense now.

mumtotc · 08/10/2020 09:28

Good luck with your training, OP Smile. Your friends are not friends whatsoever, how ridiculous of them. When I was giving birth I had half of the obstetrics theatre staff in the hospital looking up my hoo ha before my c section and all I thought was, "Is this baby ever coming out of me?"

AegonT · 08/10/2020 09:36

I've had male gynocologists and obstetricians examine me and do procedures both in and out of pregnancy so I would not be bothered by a female gay midwife in the slightest.

Seriously79 · 08/10/2020 09:43

Your sexuality wouldn't of bothered me in the slightest.

All I was bothered about whilst in labour was getting as much pain relief as possible 😂

Good luck to you x

Kamacs12 · 08/10/2020 09:43

You definitely need to find new friends. I couldn't care less about the sexuality of my midwife. Why on earth would who you're attracted to make any difference about your ability to do your job?

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/10/2020 11:28

How silly and immature of these people op, doctors are male and female and I'm sure have many different sexual orientations as well as the patients. Gosh some very narrow minded people in this world unfortunately! Good luck with your training, I'm sure you'll make a great midwife!

BestOption · 08/10/2020 11:48

Weird people. I can't imagine anyone going into midwifery to see lots of Fannies! 🤣...especially ones squeezing out babies, they're incredible, but not exactly sexy!

As long as you're good at your job I have no preference male/female/straight/gay.

I had a Cervical Smear done yesterday, by someone who 'on paper' should have been 'ideal', but she wasn't. She was judgemental, rude, nasty & brutal. I'd sooner have had the bloke outside who was laying gas pipes. He had better manners and a far more gentle touch!

Make better friends! 🌷

You should stop being a bigot.

BabyLlamaZen · 19/02/2024 20:36

So so weird it’s not a very attractive time - to men or gay women! So strange.

WHY 2020 zombie post

Some bigot must have been searching about lesbian midwives and found this and posted to say some not very nice stuff. 🤷‍♀️
