No heartbeat detected at ultrasound

Hi all,
I went for a private scan yesterday thinking I was approx 7 weeks + 6 days. It’s been measured at 6 weeks 5 days and no heartbeat has been detected. Has this ever happened to anyone else, and has anyone ever had a successful story? I’m confident it must be a missed miscarriage. I’ve had no symptoms but my tender breasts have eased a lot now too. ☹️

I do have a longer cycle - my cycle is usually around 30 days but I still don’t think it would affect the days this much. And no heart beat makes me lose hope

I'm sorry to hear that, it must be very worrying. Have they told you to come back again next week to see if they can detect a heartbeat? Did they think it was just too early? I'm sorry I have no advice, I've not been in this situation but will be having a 7 week scan myself soon and wondered what the process would be in this situation. Keeping fingers crossed for you x

BC11 · 09/05/2020 16:00

@Trying2b they just automatically assumed I have had a missed miscarriage and passed me a miscarriage leaflet which just messed with my head more. I have to have a scan at the hospital on Monday but I just have no hope ☹️I’m absolutely devastated x

I’ve no personal experience OP, but there is an older thread here

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/2549981-No-heartbeat-at-6weeks-scan

That might offer some insights, also from an article online:

parenting.firstcry.com/articles/no-heartbeat-at-6-weeks-faqs/

Fingers crossed for you OP Flowers

That's terrible!!! I've had a little Google, as I'm sure you have too, and there's plenty of information about heartbeats being detected between 6-7 weeks and you're not quite 7 weeks yet, so perhaps it's just not visible on the scan yet. I'm assuming they gave you an internal scan? Not a lot can be detected via stomach at this point. I really hope you have some better news next week. It must be horrendous not knowing either way. I'm so sorry x

BC11 · 09/05/2020 16:09

@Trying2b that was my hope, but working from my dates from last period etc I should be further on than 6 weeks 5 days so it’s possible it’s stopped developing. Thank you for your help and kind words. It’s so sad and mind numbing ☹️ x

BC11 · 09/05/2020 16:10

@Trying2b also yes, internal scan x

I'm sorry to hear this but 6 weeks is very early. You don't know until you know.

BC11 · 09/05/2020 16:19

@OhioOhioOhio it is, but I’m pretty certain I should be further on ☹️

Happened to me twice, didn't end well. Sorry OP.

sel2223 · 09/05/2020 16:22

Hi OP, I had an early scan when I should have been 7+5 from LMP but baby only measured 6+1. I was so worried but she was fine, she caught up by about a week by the dating scan and i'm now 26 weeks.
It's not unusual for baby's to measure small at this stage so the dates in themselves aren't an issue, but what's worrying is that there wasn't a HB. To be totally honest I would have expected them to find one by 6+5 but everyone is different.
Keeping everything crossed for you for your next scan.

Navy123 · 09/05/2020 16:24

I don't want to get your hopes up but my experience was good. I had a scan when I thought I was over 7 weeks, measured just over 6 with no heartbeat. They didn't say it was a mc or anything just needed me back a week later. It had caught up a day or two and had a hb then, and is now 5 weeks old!

rbmilliner · 09/05/2020 16:45

Everything crossed for you @BC11

blindmansbluff · 09/05/2020 17:05

Also not to raise your hopes but my son's heartbeat couldn't be seen at 7+4, when I went back at 8+5 it was there. I have my fingers crossed for you. They also put me back a week.

BC11 · 09/05/2020 17:12

@navy123 @blindmansbluff Thanks everyone. It really does mean a lot. I do feel I have lost the soreness in my boobs, but I only noticed this since the scan - I don’t know if it’s in my head or not. ☹️.

I really am trying to hope for the best but the way the lady at the private scan just passed me the miscarriage leaflet has left me feeling pretty hopeless 😟

Needingsupportplease · 09/05/2020 17:17

It really could go either way cant believe they've just presumed miscarriage when you haven't shown any signs of one. Obv prepare for it but thats awful. Dont give up all hope just yet! Can you get a scan at the epu for next week if you ring and explain? Handhold x

BC11 · 09/05/2020 17:20

@needingsupportplease I know that’s what’s made me lose hope and feel horrendous. I have an appointment at the EPU Monday x

I'm sorry you're going through this @BC11, I've experienced this twice and not had a good outcome unfortunately. But there's also good outcomes on this thread. It's awful to be in limbo like this.

I'm pleased you have a follow up scan on Monday. Be prepared for more waiting if your scan is inconclusive on Monday. My experience of epu is they err on the side of caution and I was asked to go back a couple of times in both pregnancies before they'd confirm a miscarriage.

Sending you lots of love, be kind to yourself ❤️ xx

BC11 · 09/05/2020 17:27

@venusstarr thank you for your response. Im sorry this has happened to you twice. How many weeks were you when it happened? Xx

OP posts:
VenusStarr · 09/05/2020 17:34

Thank you @BC11, I miscarried my first at 9+4 and my second at 8+6. I had an early scan with my first at 6+6 due to bleeding. I only knew about my second being a MMC because I was offered an early scan due to my previous loss. I had strong pregnancy symptoms and no bleeding up until I miscarried naturally. I was obviously expecting a bad outcome because my scan showed a yolk sac and foetal pole but too small for my dates with no heartbeat.

I'll be thinking of you on Monday xx

BC11 · 09/05/2020 17:38

@VenusStarr How long after the missed miscarriage did it take for you to naturally miscarriage? It’s so awful. 😞 thank you for sharing your story xxx

OP posts:
Greenlorry · 09/05/2020 17:42

You could do a Pregnacy test again.
This is what I did and the results I got were weak, tender breasts stopped and I didn’t feel like a baby was there anymore at around 7 weeks. I started to bleed before I took the pregnancy test as I knew something wasn’t right. I had been really stressed.

BC11 · 09/05/2020 17:46

@greenlorry I did yesterday, and it was positive quite strongly. But the hormones will still be in my body so I don’t know if this is accurate.

The baby measured 7.5mm and apparently after 5mm it should have a detectable heartbeat xx

OP posts:
VenusStarr · 09/05/2020 17:48

@BC11 ❤️ with my first I'd had brown spotting on and off since 6+3. It got heavier by 9 weeks, but the night before I miscarried it was red and I miscarried the next morning.
With my second, I started bleeding with a clot at 8+5 and on off all day, but miscarried the next morning xx

BC11 · 09/05/2020 17:49

@venusstarr I’ve had absolutely nothing which makes me feel worse because I’m just in the dark completely. ☹️I had a tiny bit of brown discharge after sex last week but I’ve heard that can be completely normal xx
