Happy Birthday Phoebe! Hope she is having a lovely day!

Thanks for the updates on Joe - sorry to hear that he's poorly.

Well O has taken herself off to her cot for a nap ! Hope it doesn't mean she's going down with something . . . !

CaptainDippy · 30/04/2010 19:29

Hope so too, Bramshott!! Hoe long did she sleep??

Had a super day: P had pre-school in am and then her little dancing class, which is loves. Then my dad and his GF arrived and we all (DH, girls, dad and GF and Outlaws) went out for a nice meal at the Harvester. All tucked up in bed now. P's Party tomorrow. Picnic on the beach - eeeek!!

Happy Birthday to Phoebe for yesterday
(remembered as I woke up this morning - think I might be on MN too much!)
Hope she enjoys her party

AngeG · 01/05/2010 10:15

Hi all a here's an update from Ellen, poor joe is very poorly.
"Very fed up. We are now in addenbrookes in cambridge. Joe's lung is now completely clouded with pneumonia and they want to do a chest drain tomorrow to clear the fluid. He has missed or been late on doses of everything because nurses forgot, they have spent all day using an iv that night staff said needed to be changed today but day staff said was fine while he complained it was painful. Here the nurses have discovered it is not in right and was very painful for him. They are shocked he has not been on constant oxygen monitoring and at gone midnight we have to wait an hour for local to work so they can refit canula and redo iv. They are on ward shutdown for infection control, we're over an hour from home, and now the tell me it'll be a week before we can go to hospital closer to home. I'm tired, angry and really wishing i could afford to go private! Cards would be appreciated, it's going to be a very long and tearful week, we are on d2 at addenbrookes. Ellen x

Hope P has a great party today! Xx

StealthPolarBear · 01/05/2010 11:22

oh that's shit
Will text her today and if anyone would be happy to email me her address will send a card. Don't know if she'd be OK with that - I don't already have her address.
Wonder whether J - u - s - t - i - n knows about any of this and is providing any support.

CaptainDippy · 01/05/2010 18:46

Why don't you all send me your cards and I'll do a bulk mailing Perhaps you could enclose a cheque and I'll get a lovely bunch of flowers delivered or something!!?

For my address, email me: captain_dippy "at" yahoo "dot" co "dot" uk

I've heard from Pillock again today. Joe has had his op and all has gone well - chest drain is in and a central line has been fitted so he doesn't have canulars etc to pull out and get infected. Poor little man. Hopefully now the op is complete he will get better.

I'll send her all our love

P's Party was ace Bit nippy in the wind, but the sun was shining and we all enjoyed a picnic, run-around and pass-the-parcel on the beach Gave out wooden windmills as party favours, which went down really well Can't believe my baby is three!!

OP posts:
cazboldy · 02/05/2010 09:34

He was eating chips last night apparantly

Dippy they won't accept flowers on the ward. How about a phone card or something???

CaptainDippy · 02/05/2010 09:48

Yeah, phone card's good, but guess it depends how long she's going to be there & how quickly I can get donations in. Vouchers for something? Any ideas? Anyway, have an update ....

I got messages from her last night saying that Joe was out of surgery and crashed out on the ward. His drain initially wasn't working properly as it wasn't quite in the right place; but now it has been adjusted, all the nasty sticky stuff is coming out well. His temp is fairly normal and he is doing well

I'll keep you all updated as and when .....

OP posts:
CaptainDippy · 02/05/2010 09:58

Just to reiterate - you can email on on

captain_dippy "at" yahoo "dot" co "dot" uk

I'll send you my address so you can send me a card for Ellen and Joe (and Matthew) and, if yo uwant to, a little donation so we can purchase a voucher or something to post too.

Just flying by this evening, worked last night and will be heading to bed shortly.

Poor little Joe, dippy I will email you and happily send a card and some cash. How much? £5? More? Not sure how much I should send! What do you think?

Off now, will try and pop back in during the week but I really need some sleep.

CaptainDippy · 02/05/2010 21:17

I think a fiver seems like a reasonable amount

Had another update earlier:

"Doing OK today. First enzyme flush was finally done at 8sm with reasonable results. Temp has been rising today, but is now down again. Hoping it stays that way. He is looking much better, but sore throat holding him back."

I'll let you know when I hear more

POTC · 02/05/2010 23:51

and dippy, ange, caz eddas and anyone else i forgot i will text when it;s not midnight

CaptainDippy · 03/05/2010 10:21

Lovely for you to post POTC Have your latest update here:

"Morning all! Last night's enzyme thingy went in ok after a bit of a struggle to get it started. Nothing had drained after a couple of hours so they called the doctor and he checked on Joe several times in the night. He seems better and is moving himself more than he was, temp still not great, but eating and drinking. Still nothing drained this morning so they done a saline flush and an x-ray. It is possible that having already drained half a litre from a very small chest there is just no more to drain. Waiting for next shift to come and review x-ray - fingers crossed, please!"

OP posts:
CaptainDippy · 03/05/2010 15:07

Another update from POTC:

"X-ray shows it (sticky stuff in lung) has come out, but more still in. V.slow trickle from drain so they want to do the enzyme they missed this morning. Doctor thinks it might all come out tomorrow, but will have to wait and see what Joe's doctor thinks tomorrow. He is sat in bed now eating his second bowl of cereal."

Happy birthday to Danny and Charlie for yesterday
Dippy, thanks for the email, need to get myself sorted...

CaptainDippy · 04/05/2010 14:23

Yesterday Caz!!!? Nope, 4th May is today!! Happy Birthday Charlie & Danny!!

Have had three texts from POTC since my last update; so here they are:

1.) (03.05.2010 @ 21:31pm) "On balance today was good. Joe slept all morning and this afternoon was almost normal! Matthew visited and we were both pleased to see him. Joe fell asleep around 6pm and has had spiking temp ever since. Next flush due any time from now, then wait and see what doc says tomorrow!"

2.) (04.05.2001 @ 07:45am) "Another failed attempt at the enzyme in the night and now more than 36 hours since anything drained out. Really really hoping they give up now and take it out. Joe wants to get up and about and he can't with a tube in his side, and I need to escape the constant stress of things not working!"

3.) (04.05.2010 @ 11:18am) "They found a kink in the tube. Has been untwisted and a flush put in, but when opened again nothing is coming out. The stuff they put in should help to break down any thicker liquid in his plural cavity, helping it flow out through the drain. They've now put 3 x 40ml in and only around 20ml has come out. I've told the doctor I'm not happy to keep putting him through the extreme pain of the procedure. It takes two of us to hold him still and keep him calm; and the pain of having a tube in his side when I can see no positive results from doing it. I am hoping they will now scan to see exactly what is going on."

Poor E Poor poor Joe
