The finance tap is well and truly turned off now.

bronze · 14/02/2010 12:44

Is it actually a proper job or something flakey. I feel for you. I dread parenting these kind of things in the future

Bicnod · 14/02/2010 13:54

Afternoon all. I'm well and truly pooped. O most definitely did NOT sleep through last night. He's apparently a bit poorly as when I went to get the swine flu jab on saturday morning they wouldn't give it to him as his temp was 37.3 - I don't start worrying until it reaches 38 but maybe I'm just mean and neglectful.

Our house is now empty of west country guests and random americans and I've just about finished clearing up

Boff - that's a tough one. Is your daughter worried about failing? Sounds to me like it's just beginning to dawn on her that she perhaps shouldn't have spent the last couple of years partying and maybe should have spent a bit more time with her nose in a book. I speak from experience as I nearly quit uni at a similar point for similar reasons. I'm assuming she's a bright girl who is used to doing well? Do you know if she has spoken to any of her lecturers about her plans?

PuzzleRocks · 14/02/2010 14:34

Good afternoon

MrsG - I hope you had/are having a fab weekend in Brussels.

Auld - Not sad, I left the children with DH while I ran some errands in town yesterday. I took half an hour to sit and read the paper in Costa with a coffee and a caramel slice. It was utter bliss.

Fei - A train station? Do tell.

I have slightly webbed toes. But I also have a trailer park name.

Bronze - Fingers crossed. When will you know?

BoffinMum · 14/02/2010 15:57

It appears she has already packed up and moved to London 2 weeks ago , which probably explains why she went so quiet and stopped phoning/visiting.

We have now had a long chat and it does seem to be a legit job offer and half as much money again as her graduate mates.

But I am still not pleased.

Bicnod · 14/02/2010 16:11

Blimey

Is there any point in trying to persuade her to just sit the exams - nothing to lose etc?

Sounds like she knows what she wants, which is more than can be said for the majority of graduates...

Feierabend · 14/02/2010 19:06

Boff, easy to say I know but I am sure she will be fine. A friend of mine dropped out of uni to set up his own programming business and three years later he was a millionaire. Another friend dropped out to take a PR job and it didn't do her career any harm whatsoever. Degrees are overrated, really. Especially in marketing, PR and similar jobs. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, I do understand that you are peed off with her of course but her time at uni wasn't wasted.

My granddad was a station manager, so they lived in the flat above the station building. I wonder if my grandmother was every worried that one of her (then) seven children would end up under a train, since the station was their playground!

aoifesmama · 15/02/2010 09:54

Oh Boff - I do feel for you. My DSis did the same (my mum died when she was quite young so felt mum-like with her). She is now very happy in her job and earning more than me, with a degree and PGCE!

I have been trying to get A to sleep in her bed over night and have gone down the CCing method. It is not working! On Fri she woke at 1am, I started the in and out bit, she got mega mega cross with this and between 1am and 7am slept at stretches of about 10 - 15mins, with lots of cross yelping in between. On Sat she went down crying for her nap and continued to cry on and off for about 30 mins. When she did fall asleep it was standing up clinging on to the bars of her cot . Sat night she went down crying at 7pm, woke at 8.15pm and cried intermittedly until 12am when she slept for an hour and then followed Fri night. Last night was the same. We're both exhautsed.

I think this says its clearly not working - any advice out there? I know if I pick her up and bring her back in with us she snuggles down and sleeps, but everyone in RL tells me this is lazy and she needs to be in her own bed...help ladies!!

Bicnod · 15/02/2010 10:00

Aoifesmama - have you seen The No Cry Sleep Solution? It doesn't trade in quick fixes but it is definitely working for us.

Sorry you've had such a pants few nights - you must feel like a walking zombie today

Also, just to ask do you want her to sleep in her own bed? Sleep 'problems' are only problems if they are a problem for you IYSWIM. If you are happy co-sleeping and she is happy co-sleeping then carry on doing what you're doing... plenty of people do it. Don't be swayed by what other people think you should or shouldn't be doing - you're her mummy, you know what feels right. But if you want your bed back (which is perfectly understandable - I've never been able to sleep properly with O in my bed so he went into his own cot in his own room fairly early on) and CC isn't working then I can recommend the NCSS.

bronze · 15/02/2010 11:21

Bicnod. I've just bought that
Izy was always a good sleeper but after hes ill it takes a lot of effort to get him back to sleeping and as hes currently up all night coughing every night I know I have it to come again. Nice to have something to back me up (the book) in my tiredness.

Boff- I'm sure she'll do fine. I don't have any qualifications and I'm healthy and happy and dh only has a levels but is pretty darn good at his job.

Feierabend · 15/02/2010 11:59

Grrrr. I am going to start a househunters' thread. There are no decent houses for sale where I live! We saw a place on Saturday where the owners hadn't even bothered cleaning or tidying up for the viewings, it stank of cat piss and cat food and they clearly hadn't washed their windows for years. And then they expect their house to sell for ridiculous money. What's wrong with these people?

Feierabend · 15/02/2010 12:08

Gah, we need a new thread, quick!

bronze · 15/02/2010 12:15

my house is clean and tidy (ish)
please buy it

Feierabend · 15/02/2010 12:17

Hmmm it's a bit too far away from DH's and my work Bronze... sorry!

Feierabend · 15/02/2010 12:20

New thread here
