Beany I have forced myself to start getting the DTs in the cot at lunch after their feed at 11/11:15ish (means they go to bed about 11:45/12ish). It is slowly working. I was reluctant to do it as was happy with them sleeping in their chairs etc but the longer I leave it the harder it will be to get them doing a "proper" nap at lunch so am trying to sort it now (DS1 was crap, I am not letting history repeat itself...). Not so bothered about morning and afternoon naps, they take them wherever.

I put them in their sleeping bags in the cot for lunchtime nap so they get the idea it is bedtime.

Still no poo from DS1 .

Egg · 26/03/2008 18:03

Realise that many of you may think "well taking DS1 to McDonalds wont help his poo situation" but if we hadn't he would have had nothing at home, or just some crackers. He is currently eating cottage pie, but has made me remove the peas...

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 26/03/2008 18:19

Hi all

sorry not been around today i had a funeral to attend- all went well- although sad obviously!(it was the dad of a childhood friend- although they moved back to b'ham some time ago we have always kept in touch!)

Anyway took DD with me as i didn't want to leave her at home for a long time athough DH would have managed- it was my choice- she was an absolute angel- not a sound out of her!!!did get many a funny look look though!!!ooppss

Poblets- will be back later to fill you in about baby whisperer routine as you asked, but i must cook dinner first-

Welcme smithsfield- good to know some people who disappeared are still here reading and keeping up!!!!

Look forward to hearing more from you- Whats you DD called and when was she born?

Egg · 26/03/2008 19:24

Aha! thequietone I was going to ask if you were one of the "old gang" or a new lady! This is so nice being able to hear about some of the names on our list and make them more than names!!!!

GOOD NEWS

DS1 has had a POO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is over the moon now and still tearing round the place as though he is on drugs as he is suddenly filled with energy (he is supposed to be in bed ).

Time to crack open the champers!

Sarah - glad funeral went ok and DD behaved. Must have been nice to see a little baby there to make people smile at a sad time. Bad about your phone tho... I used to lose mine about three times a year when I was young and foolish but haven't lost one in THREE YEARS now! It's so annoying and now I have loads of pics of the DCs on mine so I would be devastated. Hope it turns up.

Egg · 26/03/2008 19:25

what is it with nursing bras. whatever size i get they are NEVER comfortable.

omy · 26/03/2008 20:05

quietone - so pleased someone popped on my birthday! what have you called your DS?

OP posts:
CountTo10 · 26/03/2008 20:06

Hi all, hope we're still surviving!!

I need a lock on the fridge as I keep eating chocolate eggs!!

Egg - what have you tried so far for the constipation? With bubs I would try warm massage and lots of warm baths etc as well as cycling legs if you haven;t alread or some extra water in with the formula or a little bit of water in a bottle. With ds1, green grapes or prune juice as well as back rubbing and as many apples as we could get him to eat. We had this issue with ds1 both as a baby and a child and it is stressful so I do feel for you.

Routine wise we kind of have one kind of don't!!! This is usually how it goes:

7-7.30am-- We get up and ds1 has bfast while I feed ds2. After I've had a cuppa and some bfast, I then get ds2 washed and dressed

8-8.30am - Ds2 usually has a nap while I get dressed and ger ds1 dressed. At this point we either go out or play games together, I might do the washing up/put some washing on.

9.30am-10am - Ds2 has his midmorning feed, ds1 has a snack and watches beebies. Sometimes after the feed we go for a walk or go out if we're not already out.

11ish - DS2 will have another nap and round about 11.3 I'll start getting ds1's lunch ready

12pm - Ds1 and I have lunch together and then ds2 will have a feed

If we haven't been out in the morning then we'd go out in the afternoon.

2-4pm - DS2 will have another feed at some point during this time

5pm - ds1 has hs dinner while ds2 has a catnap when he wakes up he has a feed and then bath, massage and dressed for bed

6pm - wind down time for ds1 ds2 tends to go to sleep and we put him down in his moses basket. DS1 has bath and then a story

7pm ds1 bed!!! Us dinner and flop in front of tv!!!

8pm - ds2 sometimes wakes for feed

12-1am - ds2 will wake for feed

3-4am - ds2 will wakw for feed

And then it all starts again!!!!!!!! Obviously as ds2 gets on a bit, we will try and match his routine to ds1's where poss!!!

CountTo10 · 26/03/2008 20:09

DS2 had his first round of jabs today he was really good though but is now really grumpy and hot and so unsettled so we've given him some calpol!! Ds1 came home early from a trip to thomas which he wasn't that enamoured with with great big rosy cheeks so he's been packed off to bed with medised!!!! Ahhh the joys of having more than one!!!

mutha2beagain · 26/03/2008 20:17

Hi all,

Congrats quietone. Princess, your kiddies are adorable.

Egg, my DS2 has also done a massive poo, a major cause for celebration in our household... is this what my life has been reduced to, celebrating the achievements of my 7 week old's botty?

DS2 suddenly transformed from being sluggish to a perky bouncy alert little wriggler ... I think I can analogise it to the baby equivalent of the way dogs tear around like maniacs just after they've done one.

Sorry for the scatalogical talk, but it's nice to know there's a whole bunch of mums out there who don't mind talking about nappy contents...

Off to watch the Apprentice and my beloved Desperate Housewives but have had to Sky plus one as DH is watching England/France and we only have one telly.

Jo9977 · 26/03/2008 20:19

Welcome back thequietone and smithfield!

Sarah, hope the funny looks were far outweighed by NICE people. Sorry, that's a bit selfish, I'm sure folks were dealing with their own emotions...

I'm surprised actually you got funny looks but that's preparing me for Monday - thank you!

rozzyraspberry · 26/03/2008 20:31

Beany - got them off at 7.15 again tonight! Our routine is we go upstairs at 6. DS1 and ds2 get their bath first, then ds3 gets a quick bath. We go downstairs and ds3 gets the first half of his feed whilst I read stories to other 2. At 7 ds1 and ds2 go to bed and then I take ds3 into our room, put him in his sleeping bag and give him the second half of his feed with the lights down. Then he goes into the carrycot. I'm really pleased that he's going down awake rather than always falling asleep whilst feeding. I am another one with no naps in bed during the day. Like you it's usually in the sling whilst we're dropping off and picking up the other 2 from nursery. Or on my knee, or in the sling in the house! Might try some naps in his bed next week when the boys are off nursery.

Omy - its funny what you said about a quick delivery followed by more unsettled babies. My labour and delivery were pretty quick this time and ds3 was really unsettled during the day for the first few weeks. He's much better now though.

DS3 was a bit grouchy today - lots of smelly farts. He hadn't had a proper poo since Monday though and seems happier after he filled his nappy just after 4 in spectacular style - that'll be another vest ruined then!

Countto10 - hope ds2 is ok after his jags - I'm really dreading that in a couple of weeks time.

Egg - McDonalds - shame on you. Our 2 thought McDonalds was called 'the dining room' for ages because I didn't want them telling anyone we'd been to McDonalds for lunch! We don't go very often though - it's too damn expensive for all of us and we live in a tiny town with no fast food places! McDonalds does hold some good memories for us though as it's where DH and I met when we worked there as students!

saskia71 · 26/03/2008 20:40

Hi All,

I have not been around for a while but life has been somewhat fraught in our household. My baby had surgery involving general anaesthetic for an inguinal hernia. He was kept in overnight because of his age. He is absolutely fine now with a barely noticeable scar.

Still no feeding routine to speak of, but finally bit the bullet and started sterilising bottles and using the ready made milk in cartons. Until last week I was still using the milk in glass bottles and disposable sterile teats - so lazy but nice.

What else, went to London to see my consultant for the 6 week check-up and smear test. Just realised I managed to get through the entire pregnancy and delivery without any internal examinations! Had a lovely time shopping and having lunch. It was the first time I did the things I used to do before the baby (hubby stayed at home to look after him). Has anyone travelled by train and taxi with a pram - just wondering if it is possible?

tyaca · 26/03/2008 20:44

just a quick hello. dd having a v mardy day and need to relieve dh. omy - i too may have to sacrifice the apprentice cause of the darn footie

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 26/03/2008 21:03

Saskia- My my you have been busy-

Glad you Lo is ok now after surgery- it must of been a very worrying time,

Glad all well with docs- did you feel odd not having Lo with you?

JO I think people were just surprised to see a woman with carseat and baby at a funeral as its not the norm, lol she did gat many aaahhs as we left crem and went to the wake though!!!!!!

You will be fine on monday and bugger to anyone who has a problem with it- i was not bothered about what other people though- just glad i got to day goodbye and pay my respects to a much loved guy!!!!

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 26/03/2008 21:09

Right oh- This is the baby whisperes routine for an average 4 week old baby- i have copied the text from her book called the babywhisperer solves all your problems- by Tracy Hogg and Melinda Blau.

This book covers all sorts of things and i personally am happy to call it my lifesaving bible- it helped with so many worries and probs with DS and some friends also used it and it worked!!!! definalty worth a read if you have time

i do not want to offend anyone with this but its the routine i am trying to follow- it worked brilliantly for DS so am doing it again for DD.

E 7.00 FEED
A 7.45 NAPPY CHANGE, SOME PLAYING AND TALKING, WATCH FOR SLEEPINESS
S 8.15 SWADDLE AND LAY BABY IN COT- IT MAY TAKE 15-20 MINS TO FALL ASLEEP FOR 1ST MORNING NAP
Y 8.30 YOU SLEEP WHEN HE SLEEPS
E 10.00 FEED
A 10.45 SEE 7-45 ABOVE
S 11.15 2ND MORNING NAP
Y 11.30 YOU NAP WHEN HE NAPS
E 1.00 FEED
A 1.45 SEE 7-45 ABOVE
S 2.15 AFTERNOON NAP
Y 2.30 Y NAP OR AT LEAST REST
E 4.00 FEED
A 4.45 SEE 7-45 ABOVE
S 5.15 CATNAP FOR 40-50MINS TO GIVE ENOUGH REST TO HANDLE BATH
Y 5.30 DO SOMETHING NICE FOR YOURSELF
E 6.00 1ST CLUSTER FEED
A 7.00 BATH AND INTO NIGHT CLOTHS, LULLABY OR OTHER BEDTIME RITUAL
S 7.30 ANOTHER CATNAP
Y 7.30 YOU EAT DINNER
E 8.00 2ND CLUSTER FEED
A NONE
S PUT HIM RIGHT BACK TO BED
Y ENJOY SHORT EVENING
E 10-11 DREAM FEED AND CROSS YOUR FINGERS TILL MORNING

NOTE- Whether a baby is breast or bottle fed, I advise the above routine- allowing for variations in times- until 4 months old. The A time will be shorter for younger babies, and get progressively longer for older ones, I can also recommend turning the 2 cluster feeds into 1 (at around 5-30 or 6pm) by 8 weeks. Continue to dream feed until 7 months- unless he?s a great sleeper and makes it through on his own.

One way of insuring that your baby eats enough is to increase his intake during the day, before 11 pm- By ?tanking up? as I call this strategy you get more food into his tummy, which in turn, enables him to sleep through longer stretches at night. Tanking up is also great for growth spurts, those 2-3 day periods when your baby eats more than usual.

Tanking up consists of 2 parts cluster feeding, which is done at two hour intervals in the early evening, at 5 and 7 or 6 and 8:and the dream feed which is given between 10 and 11. With the dream feed you literally feed the baby in his sleep .You don?t talk to him, or put the lights on. It?s easier to do with a bottle you just wiggle the nipple into his mouth and that will activate the sucking reflex. It?s a little more challenging if you are breast feeding. Before you give him your breast, stroke his bottom lip with your pinkie or a dummy to get the sucking reflex going, either way, at the end of the dream feed your baby will be so relaxed you can put him down without burping.

Some infants are harder to tank-up than others, they might take early evening feeds but not the dream feed, if that describes your baby and you have to choose one, concentrate on the dream feed only Don?t bother clustering, for example, you feed baby at 6, give bath and do the bedtime routine, and top her off at 7- she will probably only take a few ml/ounces. Then at 10 or 11 try to give dream feed, but never later than 11 pm, but don?t give up after one or two nights. It unrealistic to think you can change a baby?s habits in less than 3 days, and for some infants it takes as long as a week. There are no miracles here, but persistence usually pays off.

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 26/03/2008 21:10

sorry me again-forgot to add- the EASY listed before the time - stands for- EAT, ACTIVITY, SLEEP, You(time for u)- i ope it makes sense!!!!

princessllama · 26/03/2008 21:14

saskia, poor you with the inguinal hernia, my friends have just been through that with their new baby-a real ordeal. yes, have done taxi and train when dd was a baby -it's fine if everything goes well. taxi bit is great, they're really kind usually about helping in and out. train is more tricky depending on crowding and steps.
omy am so glad the osteopathy is working well.
egg, i think it would def help both your boys having some osteopathy.
tyaca surely you deserve desperate housewives after a crappy day?
feel like i deserve a medal after v trying afternoon with dd and mil. thank goodness dd settled just before bedtime. have resorted to spending huge amounts of time in my bedroom with lo just to avoid mil . listening to alot of radio4, why do i always end up stuck with really dreary programmes about travel insurance during the feed.
yes , i think all maternity bras are uncomfy too, specially when you get biscuit crumbs in them . also, anyone else end up with breast pads stuck to sore nipples?

I would second sarah on this. This is what we vaguely follow and ds2 has responded to it quickly and it#s helped calm his feedings as well as give us a much better time at night and in the evenings. It helps them realise what's coming next etc. We did it with ds1 and it really worked as well. I liked the flexibility in that it wasn't a specifically timed schedule but rather a 2-3 hour pattern followed through the day so that we could do on demand but with some element of control. We didn't master the tanking up and dream feed with ds1 but are hoping to do it with ds2 as it does really stretch them out at night. We did manage to have ds1 wenaed off night feeds by 16 wks though which was a godsend!!!
