I feel a little bit bad about starting this thread just now as there have been heartbreaking stories on mumsnet over the past couple of days. Ladies our thoughts are with you.

This antenatal club is particularly special, as after a long difficult nine months for all of us we are now the lucky ones who get to hold our beautiful little babies. There are lots of challenges ahead for us, of course. but hopefully we can all continue to offer support , advice and friendship during the more happy times

Right. Need advice. How long should i carry on with painful bf before giving up??

petunia · 16/08/2006 21:39

Snowboo- what's the problem? (have a book that has a section on b/f problems)

SnowBoo · 16/08/2006 21:53

Can't get a good latch no matter how hard i try. I then end up close to tears, baby gets upset then its a nightmare for us both.

petunia · 17/08/2006 09:33

Sorry couldn't get back on computer last night.
Right book says- sit comfortably upright e.g low chair without arms or sit up in bed with plenty of pillows. Put a pillow on your lap to bring baby up to right level if it helps. Try to make sure her head is higher than the rest of her body. Your baby has an instinctive reflex that makes her seaarch for your nipple to find food. Alert this reflex by sroking the cheek nearest you; she will turn towards your breast and search for your nipple. If your baby doesn't turn her head, try squeezing just behind your areola until a few drops form on your nipple. Touch her lips with this to encourage her to open her mouth. Bring her head up close to your breast, so her chin is against it and her tongue is underneath your nipple. Guide your breast in. Once latched on, the baby "milks" the breast by pressing on the areola. If your baby sucks on just the nipple, you will get sore and she won't get any milk. From your viewpoint, your well-latched on baby will have her jaws open very wide and her mouth full of breast. You can tell she is feeding properly when you see her temples and ears moving, showing her jaw muscles are working hard.

Hope all that helps. Otherwise, are you still being seen by your midwife or do you have any other phone numbers given to you by the hospital? I'd ring them and try and get someone to see you. I don't think this sort of thing can be sorted by someone describing what to do over the phone.

SnowBoo · 17/08/2006 13:35

Thanks pet. will keep going and hopefully it will just click!

petunia · 17/08/2006 18:52

Really hope that happens for you. 1 or 2 other things I've found. Hold baby so he's like on his side, so he's got his tummy to your tum and when you get him latched on, push down on the top of your breast so that he can breathe (know that's kind of obvious but I have big boobs and DD would suffocate if I didn't!)

petunia · 21/08/2006 11:29

Snowboo- how's the breastfeeding going?

Hope everyone else is well.

SnowBoo · 21/08/2006 19:53

sitting here with baby attached. greedy little boy! he has been eating more or less all day then vomming up on me!
Still sore nips but determined to keep going.

so making progress.....

petunia · 22/08/2006 09:09

That's excellent, I'm so for you that you've cracked it!

slinkstah · 01/09/2006 10:10

HI all- just come back from holiday it was good
little man was so good on the plane - helps breastfeeding, i don't think i would have done such a trip if he was bottle fed. he even coped with a heatwave of 45 degrees!! he looked very cute in his little uv suit sat by the pool in the shade of course.
it was my dd's birthday yesterday so we went to the cinema, so ds2 has seen monsterhouse lol- well he slept through it anyway.

hope everyone is ok, i am going to revive this thread if it kills me lol

did the meetup go ahead? anyone go?

petunia · 01/09/2006 22:16

Slink- Glad you had a nice holiday. Where did you go? (Sorry if you've already said!) I keep looking to see if anyone else has posted but it's all been quiet (as you can tell!) Think we're all busy with our babies.

Actually been quite busy with other things. DD1 started back at school yesterday. Emily had the last of the group of jabs on Wednesday (she's now 4 months, where does the time go?) but of course, they're introducing this new meningitis jab so that will probably be next month and then another one the month after. She weighs 14lbs 7 now (birth weight 6lbs 10).

Hope everyone else is well.

petunia · 02/09/2006 22:25

Great! Looks like I've killed the thread off again!

slinkstah · 06/09/2006 13:16

hiya petunia -sorry you havent killed the thread lol
life has been hectic the last few days with birthdays and school starting up again! hopefully my routine will come back to me and things will get easier.
i went to rhodes it was nice, it could have been anywhere though as frankly we didn't do much other than eat, drink and sit round the pool, definatly what was needed after such a stressful pregnancy!

wow emily has put a good amount of weight on, i weighed eden yesterday he is 12.5lb birthweight 7.12lb, hes on the middle line in the chart - sorry havent got to grips with all the centile stuff just yet. he is having his first set of jabs on monday, a bit late as he will be 11+ weeks then- i think there was a mix up at the clinic.
i also have to decide whether to give him the tb jab, there not doing it in all areas but are in my area but it has to be given before 3 months so theres only a few weeks to decide.
he still hasn't had his hearing test either! i think there is a back log, thats the problems with having babies at home you don't get all the stuff done afterwards.

hiya everyone else where are you...you...you....you...you (echo)

petunia · 06/09/2006 14:22

Ahh, so I haven't killed it all off then! .
Think everyone's just really busy. Glad you enjoyed Rhodes, heard that it's really nice.

Hope Eden is OK after having his jabs. I think the jabs are the worst part of being a parent. Sometimes think it's worse for the parents than for the children! I've always found that the temperature that they go on about is always worst after the first lot. Have you got Calpol in? (Sainsbury's do their own which is cheaper and just as good). I think we'll all be offered the new meningitis (probably spelt that totally wrong!) jab as well.

Eden sounds like he's doing well weight-wise (I don't understand those charts either!) Think the important thing is that the weight carries along one line and doesn't rise above or go below.

Well, off to pick up DD1 from school. Hope everybody else is well.

slinkstah · 08/09/2006 16:05

well things are returning to normal school runs, coffee mornings and lazy internet afternoons with a 10 minute clean up before dp comes home, i clean up so well it looks like ive spent hours lol

i really want to get pregnant again you would think i couldn't remember the horrific stress i went though eh! i miss pregnancy it feels very weird being normal as i spent the last 18 months pregnant.
well i can't get pregnant anyway because i am breastfeeding and not having AF's. i also need to work on my postnatal flab and my hanging belly not to mention my pelvic floor before i even consider another pregnancy.
ive decided to start a diet on monday, i have to loose about 2 stone, ive not done alot of dieting before- how long is that gonna take??? im planning on being really really strict, no chocolate no marge, no cheese etc

right he's moaning must feed him again, he's a greedy goblin

fransmom · 08/09/2006 20:29

hi everyone i just skipped through this thread with quick read. i just wanted to say that i waited for my dd 11 years after mc (i was always with wrong uns to start a family!), she is now 16mths and i s alovley little girl, it does get "easier" and although some of the times it's a hard job, i wouldn't change anything for the moon, let alone the world.

hellkat, i remember part of a post you did a few months ago and i'm so glad that things have worked out for you

((((((((((hugs))))))))) for every1 x

slinkstah · 11/09/2006 16:46

petunia · 11/09/2006 21:17

Hi slink, I'm stll here! I pop on everyday but it's all quiet. Especially hope Arabica and her LO are OK and the breastfeeding is still going well for Snowboo.
Hope the rest of the group are well.

SnowBoo · 12/09/2006 13:10

Haha found you all! I'm so unbelievably thick at the mo, has taken ages just to switch this stupid machine on!!!!

SnowBoo · 12/09/2006 13:13

As for the bfing, still going but he's down to two boobie sittings and the rest bottle as he is such a piggy! Wants a feed every 1 1/2 - 2hours so i'm knackered. Am seeing HV this afternoon so hopefully she will tell me to get hungry baby formula! Roll on sleep!

petunia · 12/09/2006 16:49

Hiya Snowboo, glad you're back! And glad the b/feeding is sort of going well. You poor thing having to feed every 2hrs. DD1 was like that, day and night, and I know how truly knackering that can be!

cori · 12/09/2006 17:11

Hello everyone, have been pretty lazy myself with posting, I am so glad to hear everyone is doing well. Nathaniel is 16 weeks old now, smiling and gurgling away happily. We also went on holiday, went for a week in Corfu, had a lovely time, and actually did get to see a few things. Nathaniel is mixed fed and we didn't find it a hassle, we had steriliser bags and bought a travel kettle with us all worked well, and allowed me to have the freedom to have a couple of drinks . My older DS started school this week. so there has been lots of excitement here.
has there been a meetup yet.
We must make more of an effort to revive this thread.

OP posts:
SnowBoo · 12/09/2006 21:00

Well Austin now has colic and has just peed all down my front.
Cori can't believe your lo is 16weeks already!

slinkstah · 13/09/2006 16:53

whey hey the thread has ressurrected!

hiya cori there hasn't been a meetup i don't think although mygirl was organising something in coventry i am not sure whether it happened as i was on hols. glad you got away too. maybe we should organise a meetup?

snowboo - i know what ya mean about being knackered my lo is feeding every hour or 2 still!! and throughout the night too- i have to sleep with him feeding its the only way i can cope with the sleep deprivation.

i went to a weaning party this afternoon and learnt how to wean, it was fun- although im not gonna wean until he is 6 months.

also ive got a prob with my dr- i know again, when don't i have problems with medical people eh? anyway eden was having his 8 week check(a bit late) by the dr and she yanked his foreskin back and told me i must do this in the bath every day as its good for his sex life later!!
then mumsnet and the internet and my past memory from ds (9) told me she was very wrong, and pulling the foreskin back too early can cause all sorts of probs!
i was suppose to go back today for his immunisations but i didn't go, couldn't face seeing the dr qwack cow!

so now i am searching for new drs and ds has still not has his first immunisations he is almost 12 weeks! oh dear what a mess.

SnowBoo · 13/09/2006 22:13

Gosh she sounds a bit off the planet to me Slink! I've been told by dr and hv's not to pull back, it comes apart naturally when he is bigger.
Why do they give conflicting advice all the time??? Drives me nuts!

Well i'm now having home visits by HVas i've been feeling a bit low and shattered, dh actually goes sod all to help out so i'm full time carer to two boys and as much as i love them they've worn mummy out! So she wants to make sure i'm looking after me, says boys are both well and cared for beautifully but due to PND in the past i'm being watched. Great!

And to top it of we have had no toilet for the day. Well, we've had two but they have been sitting unplumbed in my garden all day!!!
