i remember this so well now- how stressful it is when they cry after every feed.
another thing they do to let you know they have no food is clamp down on your nipple with their gums. ouch!

emmazed · 21/01/2012 18:28

sassy I was told by a bf councilor that it is the rule of 6 with ebm. 6 hours out of the fridge, 6 days in the fridge and 6 weeks (or is it months?) in the freezer. You can add 2 lots together as long as you count it as the oldest for when it needs to be consumed. Once you have fed them with it through a bottle you have 2 hours for the feed then it needs to be thrown away. Hope this is what you were after

MamaMaiasaura · 21/01/2012 18:30

That's what I thought too jnice. And sorry for getting wrong end of stick sassy didn't realise it was about expressing.

Jnice - cant believe our babies 3 months tomoz.

J really reaching out for toys alot now (and my nipple in the pinchy grasp - ow). She's so alert and fascinated by her elder bros

lucidlady · 21/01/2012 18:32

I normally lurk on this thread (DD born 23 October) but just had to say to BB3 that I love your friend's books -I've got them all! She has a great style of writing.

sassy34264 · 21/01/2012 18:52

i tried to feed through it with the twins jnice it started on the sun and by the thurs, i was on the phone to my mum in tears, wailing i cant cope! she brought me 2 lots of formula and we topped up. i was devastated, as i had been determined to bf exclusively, but they never really took to it. j would have 2oz and isobel only 1oz. and then after only 1 week they didnt neef it.
i know you are supposed to power through it, but when you have 2 babies crying after every feed, in the middle of feeds and before feeds, there is only so much you can take!
just wanted to pre empt it really with the ecpressing but the little chunk is a month early with her growth spurt. suppose she is/ was more than 3lbs heavier than isobel at birth and 2 1/2 lbs heavier than jacob at birth, so it would make sense maybe.
i think im going to wait an hour after she has fed and then express, feed her breast on demand and then top it up with the expressed. will keep going with that until she stops crying after the feeds. does that sound like a plan to you who express or am i missing something obvious?

LittlePebble · 21/01/2012 19:38

Sassy is she hungry after every feed? With Eli it's mainly in the evening when my milk seems to be thinner/ less there (as he feeds non stop in evenings) so rather than top up every feed with bm I save all my expressed from morning and give it in one big bottle to fill him up before bed.
Also I do in morning what BB3 suggested ages ago, I do early morning feeds all from one breast (change which one each day) and then express from the other so it's fullest -this way can get 2-4oz in one go. Will then pump at other times in day to get how much I want and pump this into same bottle.
I had same info as em for bm, 5-6 hrs out of fridge as antibodies keep it safe, 5-6 days in fridge and 6 months in freezer but once defrosted you must use immediately as the antibodies have gone.
I feel for you my left nipple is still recovering from E's last growth spurt. X

LittlePebble · 21/01/2012 19:39

Ps yes it sounds like a plan x

LittlePebble · 21/01/2012 19:52

By the way anyone seen penguinarmy? Don't think she's been on for ages....

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 21/01/2012 20:17

I'm sure I saw a post from a strawberry penguin the other day and assumed that was PA but could be wrong sorry strawberry if I'm wrong, I just thought she had namechanged

Jnice · 21/01/2012 21:06

mama I know - they are growing up way too fast Sad no longer newborns - the 4th trimester is over.

sassy anyone who nurses twins has my utmost respect and admiration. I think a bit of formula is no biggy. I've had to supplement all 3 of my boys in the beginning due to latch issues and low supply, this time I was lucky to be able to use a milk bank. Anyway, I hope I didn't come across as judgmental Smile you're doing great! I'm so sorry to hear you spilt some ebm. I have cried over spilt milk before.

Scheherezade · 21/01/2012 22:32

I have no idea how you ladies manage to bf AND express, I just run out if I try. Mind, he has about 7oz of expressed milk, so I have to aim for quite a lot if I pump!

sassy34264 · 21/01/2012 22:46

pebble no its not after every feed. i cant really tell you when and how often as my brain spins in my head 24 hours a day. Grin but it has only just started-less than a week and it does seem to be increasing.
i havent expressed again as she wanted feeding again before the hour was up! but we have muddled through.

scheh 7oz? it would take me 2/3 days i think!

jnice didnt even think you were being anything but nice. Smile i have this annoying habit of not seeing if people are being subtly horrible (pisses them off, or they assume im thick Grin
its because i never do it, it doesnt occur to me that someone else is doing it to me. so the effort is totally wasted on me. so dont worry, i never think that. x

Jnice · 21/01/2012 22:56

sassy am pleased to hear it Smile

The hardest part about pumping IMO is timing it right. The best time I agree is morning. If L is happy on one side I pump the other.

I hope the spurt is over soon.

CheshireDing · 22/01/2012 00:14

Strawberry is a newbie, PA seems to have disappeared :(

I can never be bothered to pump and bf but am going to have to start putting some effort in now - apparently bf is 98% effective against pregnancy (so was prob waste of time going on the pill) and it can become a bit less effective if you express. It's very boring though :(

sassy I find half the time I get more out by hand, you are supposed to massage boob and put a hot flannel on too, oh and think about cutie baby at the time Grin. I reckon the most I ever got was 4oz in one go, usually it's only about 2oz-3oz, I am wondering if I do it more often it might increase.

P is killing me! She is constantly feeding and won't go down and it's gone Midnight. Feels like when she was just born but with even sorer nips :( Sooooooo tired.

BB3 · 22/01/2012 03:04

Hi lucid Ah thanks (proud friend emoticon!) nice to have you in the thread, congrata on your dd, is she your first baby? This thread moves like the speed of light sometimes but do pop in and let us know how you're getting on x

Sassy - I can only pump if I've fed on one side twice and left the other to fill up, it's the only way I ever get a large enough amount. I find it so frustrating just getting 1 ounce out at a time so that way I get 5 in one go and just look lopsided Grin for most of the day

BB3 · 22/01/2012 03:05

Cheshire can dh take her for an hour just to give you a break?

BB3 · 22/01/2012 03:06

Sending virtual hugs and tea x

CheshireDing · 22/01/2012 03:21

He would usually bb3 but will be up at 6am for a 12 hour shift. Now I am not sure if I have actually hah a little sleep in between or not! Hmm.

God knows what is up with her recently. Think I might need Snickers for breakfast, along with your tea :)

LittlePebble · 22/01/2012 03:31

Oh cheshire sounds like a growth spurt Sad Eli did same to me at new year and it felt like it would never end. Can you bring her in with you in bed so you can sleep on side and she can latch on as she wishes? (I couldn't get position right but know of others who've been able to do this.)
Poor you is there anyone who can come watch her so you can have a nap tomorrow? If not I'd stay in bed all day eating snickers! Xx

CheshireDing · 22/01/2012 04:43

She will latch in when lying on my side Pebble but too scared to let her sleep in the same bed in case I throw the duvet over her and sufocate her or something.

Did just get 30 minutes of sleep and had a dream P was being fed caramel slices and me whiskey Hmm
