What has to break, before the Government is finally willing to enact welfare reform?

And can those people not be afforded the dignity to determine what best meets their needs?

What people? Those that genuinely need support? Yes of course, within reason, remember: no-one, independent of how noble their need is, can spend what we don’t have.

That’s what our country seems to be forgetting. It’s all about the need. Not enough about the cost.

Am sure we’ll soon learn from a myriad of posters that it won’t be the blessed souls fault. There’ll be a million reasons why they were unable to make basic decisions for themselves. Yet they’re somehow still entitled to vote.

Lucky for you then that the introduction of photo ID means a lot of them have lost the power to.

I think the scariest part is the cuts we have to make are huge.

We have to cut enough so we aren't spending more than income each month and thus adding to the debt.

On top of that we have to cut further to start repaying the debt.

On top of that we have to factor in the fact that as our bonds fall due for repayment or refinancing the interest rate has gone up alot. So even with no extra borrowing our interest cost will be higher.

I honestly don't think people realise the scale of it.

The only other way out of course would be to dramatically increase income via growth and taxes. Some growth should be achievable but I don't think we are going to be able to purely grow our economy out of this mess.

There is only one solution and that is to make things 'acceptable' that we, society currently think is unacceptable. I mean sure we should grow our economy as well and pay our debt down as well. In the meantime the first job has to be to make spending less than income. No more borrowing except for investment for capital expenditure only that will back itself back.

So what do I mean by unacceptable cuts. We accept parents pay for their own kids and if they can't, they can go to the workhouse. Failing that we have to get used to kids on the streets hungry and homeless like days of old.
Same benefit claimants - pay for yourself, go to the workhouse or be on the streets.
Obviously not an ideal situation but years ago it was quite normal for children to be barefoot and ragged and starving living on bits of charity here and there.
Now apply this to every area.
If you need a doctor you pay for one. If you can't you don't get one.
If you need a house you buy or rent one and if you can't then you go to the workhouse.
You save for a pension and if you can't you go to the workhouse where you will likely die quickly.
Okay you get the drift.

We repay our debt, rebuild our country.
The price of this is some people will die. It's the way it was before the welfare state which was not that long ago.

We need to accept that no money means no service. Full stop.

As a byproduct immigration will drop like a stone after all there is no freebies to come for.

Law and order will probably suffer in the short term so we will likely need tougher laws and sentences. Execution for murderers. Severe sentences for minor crimes so they stop happening.

So for anyone that is about to protest in 'horror' give me a practical alternative.

None of the 'it's inhumane' or 'it's our job as society to care for the young and old'

That may well be your viewpoint but it does not balance our books.

Practical solutions to balance our books, reduce our debt, regain financial viability and rebuild the country.
So for anyone that is about to cry 'we can't do that because........' I want you to give me a real, practical solution to fix our spending/debt problem.

I think there will have to be a phasing situation though.
So state pension for example. Frozen in value.
People in sixties get 80%, people in fifties get 60%, people in their forties get 40%, people in their thirties get 20% and people in their twenties get nout cos they have time to save still. Then as people die off the state pension no longer exists.

Remember when / if we manage to return the country to profitablity we can start paying things again if we choose to (once we can afford them).

I suppose I am saying we need to return to a pre welfare, pre NHS type of country until we 'fix' the issue.

@AutumnColoursAreBeautiful this thread will be full soon, at the rate it's going, and at this point it's looking like you don't have the guts to come back and clarify whether your workhouse comments were a joke or whether you genuinely espouse these disgusting views. It's not a good look.

It’s the talk of “communal sleeping” etc. the only people to blame for the shithole the UK is in are the Tories. Not the people their policies affected.

Ever been to uni, a hospital, a hotel, a hostel? Pretty common tried and tested method.

besides: also works well for our armed forces and no-one seems to bat an eye lid there.

Far easier to target those at the bottom

You can't be bothered to even think about what will happen to those people and their dependents.

PP already suggested options such as communal living in exchange for making a societal contribution.

Beyond that, I honestly don’t care what happens to them. And Why should I? if they don’t care enough about themselves then why should I waste my time caring about them. There are other non-self caused problems in the world that need attention

Videos on how to cheat the system, yes

Videos helping people to navigate the dehumanising PIP system are different

People taking advantage of vulnerable people is not bollocks, is it now?

By the ‘people taking advantage’, who are you referring to?

’Not a good look’ is such a hackneyed MN phrase. It’s meaningless.

You shouldn’t feel like a burden or a freeloader.

No reasonable person would advocate for slashing the support you get. Many, myself included, believe more needs to be done to support those genuinely in need.

The issue is the actual free loaders (coupled with the need to balance the books). They are hurting those in genuine need like yourself as there’s less to go around.

I’m always curious as to why someone comments on a thread re. reducing benefits for the freeloaders, a lot of folk in genuine need pop up outraged and advocating for why they need benefits. When they’re not the demography being discussed.

It pretty much happens without fail and usually ends up derailing conversations.

How do you tell who is genuine and who isn’t?

They don’t benefit from being in childcare for 12 hours a day.

It’s be peculiar for them to need to be in 12 hours a day. We both work demanding professional roles including travel, have no family support around (as we moved to find work), and my children aren’t in nursery for 12 hours a day.

5 days a week yes, 12 hours a day no.

and do you know what part of my drive to rationalise our welfare spend is about? It’s because I’d love to see my children more but instead of being able to reduce my hours, I’m having to work so that others can sit on their arse with their kids whilst shouting “tax the rich”.

Ptobalby the charlatans that you watch on youtube and tiktok and those Nigerian princes.

I am sure you know the difference between genuine professional advice and non genuine imposters?

Iv had 2 decades worth of emails about enlarging my.penis despite being female. Just because a message is being put out there doesn't mean it's true or works

Despite being a female, have you and 371,999 other females sought out a YouTube about penis enlargement….

Thought not.

You're entitled to your opinion. It has no bearing on the point I was making in my post, though, so I'm not sure why you even wasted keystrokes on that post.

Interesting, because a significant number of those viewing the YouTube were lambasting the PIP assessors…

Come on. Are you telling me you think you’d lack the ability to determine someone in genuine need from someone taking the piss?

How do you get through life if you lack such basic critical thinking skills?

also: see previous posts for examples if you’re stuck

Ik how you feel about the tories don’t worry. There’s still a problem in that people expect Labour to keep spending and debt is too high.

Interesting, because there are a lot of Labour supporters about - and yet, if the YouTube comments are to be believed, the PIP assessors are trying to thwart applicants. Hard to square with love for the government.

Oh so it’s easy to determine what’s genuine advise but not so easy to determine who is in genuine need. How’s that work? 🤔

I lived with my son in hospital for 10 months. It was awful for many reasons and one of those reasons was shared wards.

It doesn't work well, there's just no other option.

Harder to square the statement that it easy to get awarded PIP

You research the organisation/person giving advice

Do you not do that before you use someone's services?

lol of course I do. And that’s my point: it’s just as easy to determine what’s genuine advice as it is to determine what is genuine need.

Have to give it to you, you fell head over heels for that one
