What has to break, before the Government is finally willing to enact welfare reform?

And how do you decide someone is feckless?

No fault of their own, again, how do you define that?

Benefit fraud numbers say the majority of people are genuine. So are you going to reassess every case?

@Schlossadler makes good points. Plus, surely the following cases are obvious:

  1. Already struggling to raise a child from baby daddy # 1 yet somehow decides it’s a great idea to have another with baby daddy # 2. Clearly lacking in foresight right (and I’m being polite)?
  2. Too lazy to put effort into getting qualifications as would rather be smoking weed and gaming
  3. Claiming endless benefits for anxiety and depression despite never working a day in their lives. Anyone would be depressed and anxious if they didn’t work
  4. Requiring endless medications, GP visits, benefits due to their BMI competing with their IQ… rather than being bothered to look after their own health and diet
  5. Having kid # 3, when struggling with kids #1 & #2
  6. Somehow taking more than 6 months to a year to find a new job despite supposedly searching full-time. That’s pretty much practically impossible if you’re actively looking for jobs you’re qualified for and being reasonable with your expectations. That’s why many other countries limit unemployment support to a time period

Need I go on?

Surely you can see it wouldn’t be too hard to determine genuine need from being lazy and feckless.

I mean. Within the family environment it’s clear if your sibling etc is taking the piss. Just scale the concept up.

But we do have a pretty decent education system. Our PISA rating is 11-13th in the world.
It's not our education system fault that many parents (usually the same benefits class) don't value education and teach their kids the same.

Our education system alienates huge numbers of youngsters who become disengaged from learning. We need to research, understand and deal with why that is. Personally, I think it's because of "over-academicisation", i.e. too much emphasis on academic subjects and not enough on vocational subjects, caused by the scrapping of secondary moderns in the 70s when they were converted to comprehensives with the mantra of "a grammar education for all" which is clearly a failed policy. It's also why we have a massive shortage of practical/trade workers such as plasterers, car mechanics, electricians, plumbers etc. We need to be giving children a different "track" at a much younger age where they can concentrate on basic life skills, such as literacy and numeracy (not Maths and English Literature!!), alongside properly taught practical/vocational skills with proper specialist teachers in properly equipped classrooms.

Exactly this, it is impossible to weed out (a relatively small proportion) of feckless or undeserving recipients without hurting the genuine as well.

It's very easy actually. And this proportion is not small at all.

  • All income benefits linked to previous earnings and time limited, e.g. 6 months
  • Housing support is only provided if you work at least 30h/week in the area. If not, you can be offered housing in the cheapest area in the country, might be hundreds of miles away
  • PIP assessments based on objective diagnosis and in person asessments. Modern medicine is advanced enough to say that cancer, MND, dementia etc patients need support and to what extent. Bad back - physio. Mental health - only intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disorders. ADHD does not require PIP.

Oh, and reinstate child benefit cap.

And how are you going to assess al that? At what cost

It also sounds like it will be women who are going to be punished.

I can understand the concern re. getting caught up in the melee risk.

It does however detract the focus from where is needs to be.

Out of curiosity may I ask what the concern re. communal living is?

I ask as it seems a sensible model to not only reduce costs but also provide a better environment for folk (community, food including for those who may not know or care for a good diet, better able to target services and support).

It’s also something I’d be happy with myself and in many ways, an option I’m actively considering for my old age in terms of supported living type arrangements.

It’s also just how most students live and they get by just fine with it.

Not forgetting our beloved Chelsea Pensioners who scramble to sign up for it!

I'd have many concerns.

I have a disabled child who has complex needs. It wouldn't be suitable for him for several reasons and he wouldn't be the only disabled person it wouldn't be able to work for.

You suspect and your suspicions are based on tiktok and youtube?

Let’s reverse things, and ask you a question?

Why do you think there are so many Videos coaching people to game the UK welfare system?

Very easily and efficiently, will cost me less per applicant than what I’d spend paying them £20k+ per year. I’d even have some surplus to invest in a large red “Denied, try harder” stamp for those taking the piss.

Why would women be punished? People would be treated the same independent of sex.

So only those who were deemed feckless would be forced into community living?

No, but those that need support wouldn’t have it removed.

Because people are easily misled and it is easy money for those content creators.

I’m ok with what it is. For the record I don’t think anyone shouldn’t have a tax free allowance.

That’s the crux: it’s not for society nor me to deal with if they can’t even bother themselves to consider the consequences.

People need to be responsible for themselves, accountable for their own life choices, and play their part in society.

Bottom line is we need to balance the books. There’s not an endless pit of money nor more broad shoulders to carry the masses. Difficult choices need to be made and I’d much rather money was prioritised for genuine deserving rather than go to those who have just been irresponsible or entitled.

Surely you recognise that?

It’s very easy to advocate for spending more of other people’s money on “noble causes”.

It’s ridiculous to call people ‘selfish’ because they can see debt is too high. It’s costing shit loads and is unsustainable.

It’s the talk of “communal sleeping” etc. the only people to blame for the shithole the UK is in are the Tories. Not the people their policies affected.

Children benefit from a strong economy. Look at the Nordics

They don’t benefit from being in childcare for 12 hours a day.

They weren’t born feckless.

Far easier to target those at the bottom

You can't be bothered to even think about what will happen to those people and their dependents.
