Thatcher, the worst Prime Minister Britain ever had.

Thatcher wrecked British manufacturing industry and devastated whole areas of Britain by her obsession with high interest rates.

Under her rule crime rates soared. The Health Service was wrecked. Before she came to power it was the best in the world. After 11 years of her rule it was the worst in the developed world.

Britain's mental hospitals were closed and their inhabitants dumped on to the streets of our cities to be a menace both to themselves and to the general public.

All forms of physical punishment were banned in schools, thus wrecking the education system for ordinary people.

Thatcher crucified the Health Service and was responsible for a number of equally wretchedly mean actions, such as abolishing the Wages Councils and making various cuts in welfare benefits. And breaking the State pensions link with national average wages

Margaret Thatcher also ruined the Social structure of this country by stopping the building of Social housing during her Premiership.

She wasn't evil, the reason we don't have a major shipbuilding or a mining industry is because they were grossly uncompetitive and required heavy Government subsidisation in order to survive. Subsidising uncompetitive industrys is madness and Thatcher was right to bring it to an end.

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 21:46

but there was still an industry there, now there isn't

byrel · 17/12/2010 21:48

It was only there because the Government was subsidising it

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 21:55

and probably creaming off profits

byrel · 17/12/2010 21:56

There were no profits that why when a lot of the major industrys were privitaised they went bust, hence why they aren't there anymore.

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 21:57

so everything should be profit driven?

usualsuspect · 17/12/2010 21:58

Lots of people lost there jobs though ...oh wait.... is that history repeating itself I hear

byrel · 17/12/2010 22:01

Of course not everything has to be profitable but they have to either provide a vital service to the country if they are going to recieve state subsidies. The ship-building industry didn't and instead was a blackhole which needed the Government to constantly subsidise it. You should squeeze the efficient parts of the economy to subsidise inefficient industrys.

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 22:02

what a sad state of view to have

byrel · 17/12/2010 22:06

Why is it sad, low-tech and low-skilled primary industrys can't survive on a large scale in a modern western economys, they are always going to be outcompeted by developing nations.

Beamur · 17/12/2010 22:10

There are still subsidised industries - aviation, farming...(less so increasingly with farming I grant you)

electra · 17/12/2010 22:11

She was a monster.

usualsuspect · 17/12/2010 22:12

The reason this country is in a mess is because there is no industry here any more ..not because of the benefit culture ..why can't people see that

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 22:12

brunel must be turning in his grave

electra · 17/12/2010 22:15

sheesh - I can't stand this hankering some people have for Britain to be regarded as an empire or a view that we are somehow 'better'. It's pathetic.

ivanhoe · 17/12/2010 23:34

//////The reason this country is in a mess is because there is no industry here any more ..not because of the benefit culture ..why can't people see that////

Because people are thick.

Ivanhoe. You keep saying people are 'thick' I feel that it is not that people are 'thick' but they lie in their comfort zones and cannot be interested in politics, even though politics and the political elite affect their everyday lives. The benefits culture does have an impact on the economy and people think they can have 'something for nothing'. Taxpayers have to pay for them.

Thatcher, it is true did wreck the manufacturing industry,(we live with the impact of that today) but as previously said, the Labour party has done far worse, and Blair must rate the worst Priminister ever.

The reason this country is in the state it is because too many are infatuated with X Factor and football. If the hordes that attend and support football (thousands) showed us much fervour for politics that they do football, then the country would not be in this mess, for a raft of reasons.

Women sadly are also to blame. Most women I know I not in the least interested in politics, let alone any activism in that area.Sad

'are not'

Beaaware · 18/12/2010 13:26

I remember the Thatcher era for the BSE crisis in particular, I remember our ministers telling us that beef was safe to eat and it was not possible for mad cow disease to pass onto humans. I now know that Thathcer & her ministers were lying to us. It is indeed the case that mad cow disease can be passed from animals to humans and today we still see the legacy of Thatcher decisions today, people in 2010 are dying from vCJD the human form of mad cow disease. This is what one journalist has said about Thatcher & her ministers

"BSE IS PROBABLY THE MOST CYNICAL ACT OF BIOLOGICAL WARFARE EVER WAGED AGAINST A CIVILIAN POPULATION BY A WESTERN GOVERNMENT, THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT PUT THE NARROW BUSINESS INTERESTS OF ITS FARMING INDUSTRIES BEFORE THE HEALTH OF ITS OWN POPULATION, AND THAT OF OTHER COUNTRIES"

who would have thought that 25 years on we would still be reading about people dying from this horrendous brain wasting disease, I think of Andrew Black who at 24 years of age died in 2007, why? what had he consumed, what vaccines was he given, someone was responsible for his death, he was'nt born with mad cow disease, look up www.justiceforandy.com, many families are silenced and do not speak out when a loved one dies from vCJD, but bravely Christine Lord (Andrews mum) is speaking out and telling the truth.

ivanhoe i don't understand your comment to me.

ivanhoe, I am with you on everything you say, except (without the /////)
Have you got a bottle of champagne ready for celebrating when she drops off this mortal coil? I have (ok, it's fizzy wine, not champange, but it's the thought that counts, right?)

Notevenamouse · 18/12/2010 16:54

What is with the ///// anyway. I don't really understand why you were rude to me TBH
