Thatcher, the worst Prime Minister Britain ever had.

Thatcher wrecked British manufacturing industry and devastated whole areas of Britain by her obsession with high interest rates.

Under her rule crime rates soared. The Health Service was wrecked. Before she came to power it was the best in the world. After 11 years of her rule it was the worst in the developed world.

Britain's mental hospitals were closed and their inhabitants dumped on to the streets of our cities to be a menace both to themselves and to the general public.

All forms of physical punishment were banned in schools, thus wrecking the education system for ordinary people.

Thatcher crucified the Health Service and was responsible for a number of equally wretchedly mean actions, such as abolishing the Wages Councils and making various cuts in welfare benefits. And breaking the State pensions link with national average wages

Margaret Thatcher also ruined the Social structure of this country by stopping the building of Social housing during her Premiership.

///////Many of her policies such as the poll tax were poorly thought through but overall she was a good prime minsiter I think/////

"You think".

If ever two words summed up nothing, these are the two.

Her record speaks for itself though. She inherited an economy that had needed an IMF bailout with an inflation rate of 12%. Many of the industries were nationalised and wholly inefficient. She got a grip on inflation and put an end to the wasteful industries whilst destroying the unions whos actions had hurt the country for so long.

MT was the second best prime minister of the C20th. First was Churchill.

not only was she the first female prime minister - rising head and shoulders above her competition in her political ability -$7 but she turned the UKJs fortunes round -

nd you are talking crap ivanhoe - even the poorest 10% got wealthier above the rate of inflation under her government. My folks managed to be unemployed beneath both the Callaghan govt and the tail end of hers, they should know!

if you want to finger a PM for the wrecking of pensions, take a long hard look at Gordon Brown....

actually for worst post war PM, I nominate Callaghan.

BeenBeta · 14/12/2010 17:13

There is no doubt Thatcher made mistakes.

Given where she started with a country on its knees and virtually ungovernable - who wouldn't have made mistakes?

Sorry but the whining about former nationalised industries is intolerable guff. They were bankrupt firms that should have been closed down in the 1950s not left to fester on and drain the public purse for another 2 decades.

We only have to look at the disaster of propping up our banks in the last few years to see why nationalisation is always a bad idea. Firms have to be allowed to fail.

Thatcher would never have propped up the banks using public money - but a Labour Govt did and look at the drain on the public purse again.

It will be a Tory Govt that shuts them down or sells them and tomorrow would not be too soon in my view. I wish we had her in office right now.

FellatioNelson · 14/12/2010 17:18

And this government will be dealt the same fate. They have inherited a crock of shit and are expected to bring us back from the brink of disaster, just like Thatcher did. They'll do it - but we'll hate them forever more for their troubles, as Nick Clegg is already learning. People love to only remember the bad stuff.

ivanhoe · 15/12/2010 11:51

FellatioNelson

I take it you agreed with privatisation of the utilities which the poor struggle to pay.

With the high unemployment created by right wing dogma as an inflationary tool ?

With the old age pensioners struggling with a below par State pension, and means tested handouts ?

With no housing for those who cannot afford to buy ?

And that's just for starters.

Thatcher was not a political giant, she was an evil bitch who threw millions on the dole and put millions on the streets and into poverty.

Thatcher took greed ad selfishness and made it laudable.

People in general who continue to support this woman, like her, they should be locked up and the key thrown away.

The very worst PM. Her legacy lives on. Sadly.

I agree wholeheartedly with ivanhoe

Mrs Thatcher saved this country from the depths of despair. We had needed the IMF to bail us out in 1976, we had an economy that that was backward and crippled by strikes called by unreasonable trade barons like Scargill. She wasn't perfect but compared to clowns like Heath/Callaghan she was a godsend for the country

///////which was whether you think her influence was good or bad///////

Her influence was outright evil.

The fact that you had to ask, makes me wonder about you.

She threw the poor into despair, the old, the sick, the unemployed, all suffered under her while she created a mammoth rich and poor devide that New Labour inherited, but did nothing about.

Thatcher was/is an "evil" person who only had time for the well connected, the rich and the powerful and Some of those who voted for her, the rest could go to hell and if possible she would make their lives hell on earth.

People died of hypothermia (sp) and waiting for operations on her watch. Child poverty grew under her stewardship. Unemployment soared and she had the brass neck to say "Labour isnt working".

Schools and hospitals were starved off resources by her government.

Yes she was great if you were well connected, rich and the powerful.

I am looking forward to her death so I can have a celebration party during her (no doubt) state funeral, first song will be "highway to hell" because that is where she will be going, perhaps she will meet the murderer and dictator Pinochet her close friend.

Notevenamouse · 16/12/2010 14:40

Cameron will be worse wait and see.

Notevenamouse · 16/12/2010 14:48

She was evil but at least she had a brain.

Margaret Thatcher was not evil what a load of toss, a truly rotten Priminster who was also not 'evil' was Tony Blair! He and the Labour party sold this country 'down the river'. Blair brought us into two wars, and has killed thousands. All because he was a poodle to Bush and his vanity preceded his so called intellect!

The labour party legacy will live on, and the country will take decades to recovery from its mis-management.

Thatcher did do some things wrong, decimating our industries was a terrible thing, but evil? Hardly.

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 21:36

she was evil

does england have a mining industry or shipbuilding industry anymore?

stillbobbysgirl · 17/12/2010 21:44

"sorted the unions"?!?!? So, now her little prodigy can make sure bosses can lay off whoever they like and stay rich while we suffer?

Apparently the taxpayer will be paying for her funeral when she eventually pegs it - does this mean I can dance on the grave I helped pay for?

complimentary · 17/12/2010 21:45

Newave. Have I missed something? Under Labour and Tony Blair & Co, yes, the following happended 'People died of hypothermia waiting for operations' (and MRSA) 'Child Poverty' is worse now (caused by labour). 'Unemployment soared' under labour! With one in four under 25's unemployed. The labour party orhchestrated mass immigration which culminated in recruiting cheap (for their rich mates in business) labour then undercut the British working classes and took jobs.

The great labour leader Brown then sneered at the terrible 'bigot' Mrs. Duffy for daring to quesion his immigration policy!

I know the labour party were great!Smile.
