If someone claimed to be the Son of God today…

If someone claimed today all the things that Jesus did/said, would you believe them?

Curious about how people would respond in today’s world.

Yes, of course. Any acts they've committed don't cancel out what was done to them. In fact, the acts they committed confirm how profoundly they were damaged by what was done to them. I can condemn someone's behaviour, be furious at them, hate them, and still feel sad for the human being inside them who was deceived, manipulated and abused into becoming what they became. Can't you?

Are you sorry for the Hamas people who murdered all those Israelis a year ago? They too were deceived and manipulated into joining that murderous organisation.

AlteredStater · 17/12/2024 12:04

SleepyHippy3 · 17/12/2024 10:26

It’s not a fact.

At the moment, you're right, it's not a fact. You'd need to die to see whether it is or not. Please don't, btw!

Well… yes. Is that so bizarre? Many people who've done terrible things have had terrible things done to them. One doesn't cancel out the other.

If at no point they have repented of what they've done, and have not accepted Jesus as their saviour, then I'm afraid they will pay the wages of sin, which is death.

So? What's that got to do with your lack of empathy?

If God doesn't feel empathy for them then who am I to disagree with His judgment?

Wow.

It’s not even the content that’s the main issue for me, it’s the attitude. Where is the the tolerance for others? The critical thinking?

SleepyHippy3 · 17/12/2024 13:17

Feelingathomenow · 17/12/2024 12:02

One of the most basic requirements when having a debate it to clarify terms - this is the very antithesis of “word salad” is that the only phrase you know?

Either define the terms you are asking me to comment on or accept that you are ill equipped to continue this debate.

I don’t think you must certain of some of the things that you claim to believe in otherwise you would be able to answer basic questions, that pertain to your faith, which you we clearly incapable of doing. You ask about the clarification of terms, I was under the impression that we are talking about your Christian god, the god of your bible, then one who created heaven, earth and hell, and who demands that we worship only him. You claim this god exists and I am asking you to provide concrete evidence of his existence. But you are unable to do it as you answer questions with questions, hardly an honest way of debating. And actually by being some what patronising, and condescending, towards me more than once, throughout our exchange, I am starting to wonder if that is a tactic that you employ when you are unable to come up with actual credible answers, because actually you just don’t know your self, and you are not certain of what the answer is, in this case proving that god exists.

Happy Yule!

Let me ask you, then. Do you have empathy for Jimmy Savile? For Myra Hindley? For Hitler? Look back in the history books for Amelia Dyer. Harold Shipman? Because I don't.

Let me ask you.

If Myra Hindley had had terrible things happen to her, do you think that would cancel out her appalling crimes? Make her crimes somehow less awful?

If not, then why would the fact she'd done appalling crimes cancel out the fact that terrible things happened to her?

Sin is a control mechanism used in religion to make people behave a certain way. Doesn’t mean you’re going to die

Well that’s the thing, how do you define what is the Christian god? There’s many different ways this can be defined. For example are we talking about the Gnostic Christian Demiurge. Lots of different groups of Christian’s have different relationships with god. I’m not Christian (at least not in an orthodox sense do I’m not sure what you mean by “your Christian god”.

its interesting thinking why you repeatedly angrily refuse to define two concepts, “god” and “proof” I can define both of these for me, but as you asked the question you need to clarify what you mean by these terms so I’m answering the right question. What have you found so objectionable about someone asking you to clarify what you’re asking so they can answer fully. I can only assume you cannot understand what you’re asking. Maybe this isn’t the right conversation for you.

You, not having answered any questions at all, please go and patronise some one else, with your „”debate”.

I’m sorry if you find knowledge and someone seeking clarification patronising. But maybe consider your reaction to these two things. It’s utterly bizarre!

But just to help you I will use my definitions. “God” is a perineal universal force that exists outside time and space and is therefore bound by the rules of the universe. As such proof, or as I would put is scientific methodology is not a suitable mechanism to establish whether God exists, This is because scientific methodology is designed to look at and measure and record data and phenomena governed by the rules of the universe it seeks to establish. Does that help?

I stated IF at the outset of my post, please go back and re-read it.

Sin controls people. Your sinful human nature controls you. If you are free of sin you are free of control.

Sin is a religious concept. As I don’t believe in god or any religious rules, sin doesn’t exist to me.

Well you still have the non-religious equivalent of it - for example, harmful actions or words, selfish behaviour, etc. Those thoughts and actions can still cause harm to others and yourself.

Jesus said 'If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.'

I won’t die if I cause harm or am selfish
