I believe that man invented god. End of. (Pending some kind of proof to the contrary. )

starlover · 17/11/2005 23:10

here is the theroty taht proves god does not exist:

If god is all powerful then he can create something big enough to destroy himself
only then he can't be god because he can be destroyed

but if he can't create something that can destroy himself he is not all powerful and therefore is not god

janh - so who invented man?
starlover - I don't actaully believe God is all powerful.

{smile]

People don't generally ask other people to explain their beliefs. I would never say to a religious person, "so, really, you believe in God? What's up with that?"

Pruni - I just explain that I find the idea ridiculous that people live their lives by the many thousands of interpretations of a book that may or may not have been written factually.

I find it ludicrous.... and I know my opinion offends, but you asked.

Honestly for every 1 person that 'faith' helps.... there are 20 that die because of it. Well..... obviously not an accurate statistic.... but more symbolic!

CarolinaMoon · 18/11/2005 11:53

I say I'm an aetheist and they, um, generally know what I mean .

I generally go on about man-made religion and how humans seem to need to believe in something bigger than themselves/that there's a point to it all/that death isn't the end etc.

I do feel a bit embarrassed talking about it with most church-goers (e.g. my MIL) because I'm kind of saying, you poor deluded fools. But hopefully not so bluntly .

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 11:53

Really? What do they say?

People don't dare, with me.

I think I'd just call on Occam's Razor.

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 11:53

ncq, not sure if I agree with that. People don't tend to ask about christianity, but something a bit more unusual (which goes for athiesm as well) and people do tend to ask more.

Caligula · 18/11/2005 11:53

I don't really think of my "belief" as being a belief.

It's more a lack of belief.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 11:54

Hmm, I'd be tempted to say "so. You're a Christian. Really?" And then ask if they wear polycotton or do any other non-biblical things.

Well, only if they were rude about it.

SackAche · 18/11/2005 11:54

CarolinaMoon - I'd LOVE to be that blunt about it!!!

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 11:55

I don't get ocams razor. God is the simplest way of explaining life.

aloha · 18/11/2005 11:56

Same as Janh. Also I don't believe in fairies either. I find the fact that people believe in gods utterly baffling tbh. And all religious people are also atheists in a way...in that they don't believe in their rival's god/s.

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 11:56

lol @ nqc

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 11:56

Um, Occam's razor doesn't say "simplest is best", it says, in the absence of any evidence, simplest is best.

There's no evidence, from a scientific point of view, for God.

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 11:56

I do aloha. I belive in everyone's Gods. I think I'm going to get off this one now!

SackAche · 18/11/2005 11:57

HA Aloha!! Fantastic point!!

How long do you think its going to be before some posts here that they are really offended by this?!?!

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 11:58

ok, I can see that point nqc. I'd never heard of it before, did a quick google and needed calrification. Why is simplest best then?

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 11:59

Pruni, ack! Who are these people!?!

The "communist" states are as relevant to religion, as the crusades are to (most) modern Christianity.

How are you on arcane biblical detail? Can you ask if they give their virgin daughters up to be raped (Job)?

aloha · 18/11/2005 11:59

You believe that there are actual, living supernatural beings in the shape of cats and elephants Kelly? And that supernatural beings live on top of Mount Olympus? And that when you die someone rows you across the River Styx? No? Oh, you atheist!

aloha · 18/11/2005 11:59

NQC, or if they would lay their child down on a stone slab and slit their throat with a knife to prove how much they loved god?
