Well, it's just most likely, I guess.

I don't think Occam's razor is a proven thing, it's an axiom - something most people choose to agree on as a starting principle.

Think of it this way, if I go into DS1's room, and his books are all over the room, the simplest explanation is, he did that. But it's possible that aliens came in, threw them all over. Or gravity stopped working for a while, and the books just floated around. There are lots of reasons. But the simplest one is, he did it.

aloha · 18/11/2005 12:01

Also, I'm not so much an atheist as anti-theist.

harpsichordcarrier · 18/11/2005 12:02

ooh aloha explain
may well pass that line off as my own

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 12:02

I don't think they are supernatural. I believe that god is manifest in many forms and no form is more valid than any other.
I'm not quite sure if you are beign rude or what! Why athiest?

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 12:02

Wait, Kelly, does this mean you believe in intergalactic walruses and martian bishops, too?

sweetkitty · 18/11/2005 12:03

I usually say "I believe in evolution and as humans evolved each culture began to evolve their own higher being" if there was one true God then why are there hundreds of different religions and why do they sometimes hate and want to kill each other.

I also sometimes say I'll believe when I have proof. Big issue between DP and I as he is a Roman Catholic who goes to church quite often.

MascaraOHara · 18/11/2005 12:03

If anyone ever asks me what religion I am I merely say I don't have one. It has never opened a discussion and I would be surprised if it ever did tbh.

aloha · 18/11/2005 12:03

Because I think religion is a very bad thing and is used by people to make other people's lives intolerable.

SackAche · 18/11/2005 12:03

Its not so much a God I don't believe in...... as the bible! Its just baffling and ludicrous that people take that as..... well..... gospel HAHA!

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 12:03

I can buy the manifest-in-many-forms line. But surely, some of the rules are pretty contradictory. Is God suffering from some sort of multiple-personality disorder?

aloha · 18/11/2005 12:04

kelly, if you don't believe that actual beings who take the form of cats are gods and that when you die you are physically rowed across the River Styx you would have been an Egyption atheist.

Tinker · 18/11/2005 12:04

Hate the word atheist really. It seems to be teh default position, as though being a theist is the norm. Being a theist is a choice, surely, not believing in god would be the norm? Of course, I would say that though. Otherwise, say same as Mrs H.

Nope, it means I believe a higher power exists and it doesn't really matter what religion you follow. What have intergalactic walruses and martian bishops to do with God.

SackAche · 18/11/2005 12:06

Kelly - I'm confused by the walrus reference too!

motherinferior · 18/11/2005 12:06

Slug posted once that she didn't see why she should trust someone else's imaginary friend, or words to that effect. I thought that was brilliant.

MI - Oh I'm definitely going to use that one!

...but perhaps not when PIL's bring up why I'm not having the children baptised in the Catholic Church (or at all)!

harpsichordcarrier · 18/11/2005 12:08

it's a good q pruni
I am usually far too reticent to justify myself for reasons of offending
if challenged I tend to be a little flippant (quelle surprise, hc's default position)
what do you say?

Kelly1978 · 18/11/2005 12:08

I don't believe in the bible. I see your point aloha, but an athiest is beliveing nothign unreal exists. I think worshipping cats is actually no different to praying in church at the end of the day - it is still acknowledging a higher power.

Well in that case Kelly... I'm not an atheist. I DO believe in supernatural stuff..... and love watching Most Haunted.

harpsichordcarrierforcharidee · 18/11/2005 12:10

yes, I get that too
assumption I have no morals....
