We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).

NomDePlume · 05/01/2006 16:11

I like human names for animals, although Raisin is quite sweet (pardon the pun!)

out of your list i like Otter

labs look a bit like otters when swimming, IMO!

My grandparents had a lovely black lab called Kymbo when I was growing up ... black labs will forever be Kymbo to me.

nailpolish · 05/01/2006 16:13

best dog i ever met was called Waggie - he was a collie/lab cross

Kelly1978 · 05/01/2006 16:15

we had Brewster, Basil, and Angus for our male labradors. All my mother's choices, we used to call angus 'fungus'

golds · 05/01/2006 16:17

My MIL's black lab was called snoopy (!!??!!) the one before that was Rufus

Earlybird · 05/01/2006 16:19

Obscure trivia: I think Ben Fogle (posh Castaway alum) had a black lab named Inca. I've always liked that name, and thought it suited that sort of dog.

Serendippity · 05/01/2006 16:19

Shadow
i think that's perfect for a lab
We called our Weimaraner Spook because of his breed and colour which suits him brilliantly, but feel free to steal that one if you like it for your boy.
SO jelous. I want another puppy. Now.

I like Jem - Our last dof was called Gem. It's nice and short to shout at them! You won't feel daft to shout the dog if it disappears!

One tip for new puppy (following on from last thread) is get a cage, our dog behaviourist (long story but as you're only having one won't go there!) said that particularly with kids around puppies need somewhere of their own where they feel secure and cave like. Really handy for when you go out of the room to shut them in to protect carpets (from weeing and chewing).

Very excited for you - I found puppies much harder than babies to start with but we're now 1 year on and she's finally getting easier! I also second getting insurance - if he's pedigree they often come with six weeks free insurance (we made an £900 claim on the last day of this!)

Just thought of a name - rooster as he was born in year of the rooster.

My Canadian cousin has a huge black lab that she's names Klondyke (sp?)

I like Otto as opposed to otter. You lucky thing though, I'd love a black lab (in theory!) We've had springers called max and bailey, a scruffy dog called barney (temporarily)

Gizmo · 05/01/2006 16:20

I've always liked Havoc, although you do get a lot of Henry V from people who should know better.

leggymamba · 05/01/2006 16:21

I used to be a nappy for a family with black lab called 'Bang' as he was a gun dog - thought that was clever

cupcakes · 05/01/2006 16:21

wow - I've never had so many responses to a post so quickly!
np - I do like Bracken. Dd is called Phoebe but she often gets called Be-Be so it would sound like BeBe and Bracken (the rabbits) off CBeebies!

Ooooh yes, aside from names DEFINATLY get a cage we found ours a godsend and Spook loves it.

bubblerock · 05/01/2006 16:22

leggymamba · 05/01/2006 16:22

cupcakes · 05/01/2006 16:23

We like the name Jem because firstly, Dh has always wanted it for a boy and also because we have a cat called Ruby and two fish called Diamond and Jet - something gemlike would be appropriate!

I like Rooster too!

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 05/01/2006 16:27

Rooster is good, i like Roo too

leggymamba · 05/01/2006 16:36

Hope he won't get bird flu - there's a vet's bill for you!

Our dog's Ruby - never seen anything less jem like she's currently covered in fox poo after going for a walk!

Are you sure you want a dog!
