We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).

Onyx is good.

I quite like Gawain too.

Also thought about Sirius (Black) but he's too sweet for that!

Am trying to remember the daemon's names from the Phillip Pullman books.

I have cats called Otis and Oscar

if I get another one would call him

Marvin

Like Otto also knew an Odin (Norse God) that was pretty cool I like greek Gods names too like Apollo or Zeus

I once knew a hamster called Sven which I don't think will ever be bettered as a fabulous juxtaposition of name and pet.
Sven!
Still makes me laugh 15 years later

I think 2 syllable names are crucial for calling dogs. And we also have a no-real-names policy in this house - human names for humans, dog names for dogs

made me laugh too.

You could go for something silly and scandanavian I suppose - Kaspar? Jorgen? Hjalmar?!

No, none of them work quite like Sven.

Saddam?

Now I'm just being silly...

Onyx or Otto I reckon

My dog is called Master of Reality (kennel name) and pet name is Ozzy.

Bet you never thought of that (I note from previous thread he is indeed KC registered) - you can actually change their kennel name (he will have one given by the breeders - Ozzy's used to be Rutstaff Man Friday. Not that "catchy" really

A friend of mine is called Sven, and don't even think about Otto

pph, we have a snake called Ken - does that do it for you too?

Friends had a black lab - when the DH brought her home the house was a tip and I think he may well have said "this is a tip!" - anyway they called her Tip. Nice dog

god, I love Sven now.

Am still keen on Otter though.

What about Malory? I can tell my mum it is after the Morte d'Arthur Malory (she will be impressed) but really it will be for M Towers!

You want a name with a nice hard consonant for shouting though, cc (a plosive in fact) - Sven wouldn't do . Neither would Thor...Odin might be OK though!

cupcakes · 05/01/2006 16:58

Tosca is a great name!

I also like Christie (after Agatha) but it's too girlie isn't it?

I like Shadow!!

Or Otto!

Or Tweed, Clyde, Floyd, Dylan

Gingerbear · 05/01/2006 16:59

My friend adopted a deaf dalmatian. 'What shall we call him?' she asked the lady at the rescue centre 'Anything you like, no matter how much you shout him, he won't hear you!'

FrenchGirl · 05/01/2006 17:00

Like Otto

reminds me of kevin Kline in a Fish called Wanda...

Janh · 05/01/2006 17:00

Have we had Ebony? Or Jet?

Janh · 05/01/2006 17:00

Or Blackie

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 05/01/2006 17:02

I so want a black lab

sweetkitty · 05/01/2006 17:02

Lucky!

In the 80s my aunt had black dogs called Darkie and Rasta

cupcakes · 05/01/2006 17:03

What about Mortmaine (from I Capture The Castle) - we could call him Morty.

TinyGang · 05/01/2006 17:05

cupcakes · 05/01/2006 17:06

What do you think of Inigo? I like it because of the Princess Bride and we also have a ('Miracle') Max.

OP posts:
TinyGang · 05/01/2006 17:06
