We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).

I like Otter or Raisin.

My sister has a black lab called Inca (but it's a girl).

As for me...I prefer my Irish Terrier

Bosun

my dog is called dennis. He's not a black lab tho, deefer is what i'd like to call a dog.

Has he got a name yet? Had an inspired idea while mashing spuds - Bert! (After D van D's sweep.) Bertie for long. Perfect

If not Inca, how about Inkier?

(Not Snowy though - that would just be silly )

Guinness

my dog's called Caffrey!

Spidermama · 05/01/2006 20:32

I LOVE Otter. What a great name.
My dog was called 'Badger'.

Janh · 05/01/2006 20:34

Lots of votes for dark beer names - how about Mackeson - would that avoid the Max/Mac confusion?

Spidermama · 05/01/2006 20:34

Polly I knew a dog called 'Happy'. Great name. He got called 'Haps'. He lived 'til he was 18 and stank like old bins for the last four years. He and my dogs were sworn enemies, but they seemed to really enjoy hating each other.

Ahhhh! A trip down memory lane. Now I'm dog broody again.

Sooty...sorry not very good but am not a big dog lover .

Janh · 05/01/2006 20:36

Oh, oh, how about Bailey?

Otter?
How confusing is that for your children????

Janh · 05/01/2006 20:41

Some fab ones here - Badger and Otto in, Otter not. Quasimodo, anybody? Endymion? Paternius? Grasshopper?

Another inspiration (from my head) - Ozymandias - Ozzie for short. (Or Bysshe would be snappy and unusual? Byron? Milton? Napisan?)

(Wondering now why our fish are just called "the fish" and our gerbils "the gerbils"?)

crazydazy · 05/01/2006 20:44

We called our cat "Puss". She just suited it.

We then gave her away to DP's mum and dad as we found DS was allergic to her, they renamed her Tinkerbell as they said they were embarrassed taking her to the vet as "Puss Smith".

WTF???? Tinkerbell Smith sounds so much nicer, not!!!

LOL crazydazy

roosmum · 05/01/2006 20:54

knew a black lab called nimrod.
he was dignified enough to pull it off

dizzy34 · 05/01/2006 21:14

we have had three labs, one black one was called Sula (full kennel club name was Sula black velvet girl), the other black one was Bella (Bella Black diamond)and a yellow lab called Oskar. He didnt have kennel club name.

TinyGang · 05/01/2006 21:18

This is so much more creative than the 'naming babies' threads on here!

Saw a dog on tv ages ago called 'Sniff' which I rather liked. What about 'Hegley' (poet John Hegley writes loads dedicated to dogs)

cupcakes · 05/01/2006 22:31

No name yet. I go through periods of about 10 minutes of absolutley loving a name then deciding it's wrong or too chavvy (yes, I know - shoot me down).
For example, Mulberry. Also, Rocco.
Do like the Badger suggestion. Will mull on that overnight.
(Otter and Inigo still in running too).
Don't have to decide till Tuesday.
It's worse than a child's name - anything goes and there's too much choice!

I knew a lurcher called Badger. He was sort of badger coloured though, not sure about it on a black dog.
After he keeled over they got another lurcher called Merlin. Any good? Rather a cool name, and good for shouting. And a bit black-magicky to continue the black theme.

What about something russian? Gorky? Ivan? Rasputin?!!

Janh · 05/01/2006 22:44

Peter!

Turquoise · 05/01/2006 22:54

Otter is nice, and Sirius. My favourite black lab was called Luther.

meggmoo · 06/01/2006 00:12

What about Errol?

Easy · 06/01/2006 00:37

We had one when I was a teenager called Rupert.

How about Tristan? or Rollo? or Miner?
