We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).
tia

Dougal meaning 'dark stranger'

gary

I love food-related names for doggies, our labrador is called Donut, and she has a Jack Russel friend called Biscuit and another one called Parsnip. I first wanted to name her Juice - I don't know why.

Nigel
Merlot
Dexy
Rod(and gun)

re: marmite

what about Twiglett?

lyra41 · 06/01/2006 08:35

I think Jet is a great name for a black lab.

cupcakes · 06/01/2006 09:52

I like Jet but we already have a (black) goldfish called that.
Current favourites are:
Magnum (because his dad is a gundog) - dh's favourite
Otter (ds's favourite)
Raisin
Inigo
I like the last 2 best.
Also have come back to Mulberry - I think it would be good for shouting ('Mul'bry!') and you could emphasise all three syllables when ticking him off like when you call children by their full names when they're naughty .

and yes, I like Bracken too!
What about Bramble?

it's not Hill but it has given me a really good idea of what name to give him that does tie in with our surname. Trouble is I could never tell you all what we called him!

it's a no-go with dh anyhow.

cupcakes · 06/01/2006 11:33

I like Purdey - it's not too girlie is it? ( am I thinking Avengers?)
There is also a character in Love in a Cold Climate who says 'purdy' instead of 'pretty'

I love Otter and Raisin. They are lovely names.

My Mother and FIL's dog is Benson. I always quite liked that name.

cupcakes · 06/01/2006 11:34

wow perfumelady - is that your list or a top 20 of most popular names?

OP posts:
cupcakes · 06/01/2006 11:36

Keep discussing with dh. Now the choice is:

Otter
Raisin
Mulberry
Bramble

OP posts:
Sidonie · 06/01/2006 11:38

Otter, Raisin and Bramble are all good names.

perfumelady · 06/01/2006 11:39

you guessed it! it's the top 20 male dog names, max is actually no1 name but read you couldn't have that so put in nelson who is a friends dog name. hope it helped

perfumelady · 06/01/2006 11:45

try shouting a few of you favourite names out loud cause then your maybe think differantly about someting you've short listed.

cupcakes · 06/01/2006 11:52

I think we'll probably wait till we get him home (Tuesday) and then see what suits him.

OP posts:
Gingerbear · 06/01/2006 11:59

Otter I like, but it has a vowel to start - hard to yell over the fields.
Raisin doesn't appeal.
Mulberry is too many syllables to yell properly
Bramble is good.
