We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).

Lupin is a girls name

dd1 has a friend called Lupin (don't ask).

meggmoo · 09/01/2006 10:01

Call him Boo or what about Rollo (my dog's name)

I think Lupin is quite girlie too.

cupcakes · 09/01/2006 16:08

it's not overly popular at the school gate either. Am going back to Otter now. Maybe.
or Raisin or Inigo.
Really like the name Rolo but I think it probably suits a chocolate lab best. Also, dh says it's the boy from Grange Hill.

Would love to call it after a food stuff.
Please help with food name suggestions! I have less than 24 hours!

otter nice

would work well down here, the land of the black lab

dont pick anything too sophisticated as they are notoriously stupid dogs - lovely and kind though

Easy · 09/01/2006 16:48

My last spaniel was called Marmite (becos she was my mate).
Current spaniel is called Flora (but not cos it's something else you spread on toast).

A friend of mine had a black lab called Jeeves, which I really liked.

Foodstuff ideas then ....
Pudding (as in Black Pudding)
Stilton
Teaser (short for Malteser)

Sorry, end of the day

Easy · 09/01/2006 16:48

Treacle?

cupcakes · 09/01/2006 16:57

Easy - I like those. Dh won't have Marmite ( as he doesn't eat it) which is a shame.
Think Pudding is excellent. (I tend to call objects of affection PuddingPie)

lol the boy in Grange Hill was called Row laaaand!
Ok foodie ideas

Rolo (geddit)
Spangle
Oreo
Noodle
Pernod
Pepper
Pea (you get black eyes ones )

What about Taxi?

meggmoo · 09/01/2006 18:01

I used to have a dog called duck yelling her name in the park was a chore.

cupcakes · 09/01/2006 18:56

ha ha pea!
I've had a look in the back of a Nigella book and came up with these:
Biscuit (dh's favourite but I think implies a pale dog)
Crumble
Noodles (meggmoo too)
Rhubarb
Pancake
Pepper

Also like the aforementioned Treacle.

Stew (could scream at it if you don't behave you could end up as...)

mars (comes in a black wrapper)

Food comes back again to rooster.

Treacle is very londony - Had a friend at college who called every one treacle.

I like pudding. Had a guinea pig called sausage

Taxi or cab, they're black.

Janh · 09/01/2006 21:33

Pomfret? (Pontefract cakes - made of licorice - are pronounced Pomfret.)

Oooh - it's also a "large black marine food fish"

nooka · 09/01/2006 21:59

Our family dogs were called after a Roman general (not sure who's idea that was) and a Shakespeare character. There certainly weren't any other dogs with names like them! We only have rescue cats, so no naming possible there (boo hoo). I think that Treacle is the best food one so far.

Pixel · 09/01/2006 22:13

My mum's dog is 16th on the list I see - Murphy but then he is black and was a pub dog.

Dog before him was called Bacchus. Still drink related! That was a great name to call and a bit different as well. I liked that name.

koalabear · 09/01/2006 22:16

Spook

Tortington · 09/01/2006 23:51

wari notter and the goblet of shyte

a long name granted but you couldt always shorten it to shyte

Pinotmum · 10/01/2006 10:38

Has anone said Guiness, Jet or Ash? If they have - sorreee!

Pinotmum · 10/01/2006 10:42

Ooh yes, Jet is your fish

We picked up the dog this morning. He is absolutley lovely and has been really good with dd (so far!).
He has a name. It was last minute and we tried out several before settling on one which seemed to fit (and which we all like).
The prize (virtual gratitude ) goes to kleggie and her suggestion of... (drumroll)... Pan.
Short for Pantalaimon. And Peter Pan. And the god Pan (apparently he gave Artemis her hounds - and Artemis is another version of dd's name, Phoebe).
There. Settled.
Many, many thanks for all your suggestions. Tis really appreciated!
