Obviously, you don't have to make an appointment with your MP as suggested, you could email or post.

I disagree with the premise of your post.

Drabarni · 02/11/2019 13:30

In what way. Romany Gypsy Travellers are the last minority groups where it's acceptable to be racist.
It has to stop and Mp's need to eradicate this racism the same as any other.

Not being goady but what sort of racism do they suffer from?

NaviSprite · 02/11/2019 14:18

I have to admit I’ve little knowledge of what racism is directed towards the Gypsy/Romany community - maybe a bit more information would be useful as I can only really see it being an issue about spaces for them to occupy and that’s an issue that is nationwide, a lot of people are struggling to find suitable accommodation, are homeless or have been waiting an age for social/council housing, I don’t see that as being a solely Gypsy/Romany issue? I apologise if I’m misconstrueing the information from the article linked, I am rather sleep deprived at the moment Smile

TheGirlFromStoryville · 02/11/2019 14:21

People assume that an awful lot of travellers are dishonest, especially the tradespeople amongst them.

There's a group of Irish travellers that attend my mum's RC church and they are the nicest, most well mannered family.

I feel sorry that so many people feel its acceptable to come out with nasty comments about travellers.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 02/11/2019 14:24

I would add that that's not strictly racism, more it's perpetuating stereotypes about travellers.

shreddednips · 02/11/2019 14:25

Although I don't like the tone of your post, I agree this is an important issue. I regularly hear people using derogatory terms to refer to people from a travelling background when they wouldn't dream of doing so about any other group. I used to teach a child whose mother was from the travelling community. The family was concerned that she would be bullied because of this (and, very concerning, that teachers would discriminate against her) and confided in me that they had told the girl to never tell anyone about her roots. That conversation has always stuck with me.

Passthecherrycoke · 02/11/2019 14:26

Christ there is a huge amount of ra ism against travellers. It’s perfectly acceptable in most social groups to discuss how awful they are. In fact, I’ve heard of people phoning the police simply to inform them of their prescence

Of course most people have a traveller behaving badly story- I have many- but if you’re marginalised and excluded from society you tend to react by behaving pretty badly

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 02/11/2019 14:31

I'm surprised at the negative reaction here. Do people really not understand the bigotry directed at gypsy and traveller communities?

You only have to read our local Facebook page to see reactions when there is any suspicion of travellers in the area. Never mind the difficulty they have in accessing services.

I'm happy to contact my MP about this OP and I'm glad to see our local forum is mentioned in the article.

Pinkyyy · 02/11/2019 14:31

Thank you for this post @Drabarni. I am a traveller as many people on here already know and I can assure you I face racism regularly.

Unless any of you have been refused entry into a soft play with your children (who are extremely well behaved) purely based on your ethnicity, you have no idea of how it feels. And the simple fact is that we are helpless in that situation, they have the right to refuse us, but they can't do it to any other ethnic minority. That's just one example of what's happened to me, there are countless more.

Romany Gypsy Travellers are the last minority groups where it's acceptable to be racist.

Sadly, I think they are far from the last group. I'm also not sure people who are prejudiced against travellers think they are a race.

I'm not really convinced by the article. I don't see the point in asking politicians for a vague pledge requiring no action, it seems like tokenism.

Pinkyyy · 02/11/2019 14:38

Wow @ToPlanZ you are truly disgusting. You are a prime example of the hated we face every day. Shame on you.

I think that's an interesting and important point. Are you saying that there has been a test case where the EA protection against discrimination have not been applied to travellers? I'd certainly sign something wanting to change that.

P.S. So sorry people have treated you so poorly.

Pinkyyy · 02/11/2019 14:40

Oh here it comes. You know what I won't even bother to argue my case because there's too many people on here who are racist against us. This is ridiculous.

leckford · 02/11/2019 14:41

Pinkyyy Do you deny that travellers behave as outlined because they do around here.

Pinkyyy · 02/11/2019 14:42

I'm not sure what that means @donquixotedelamancha. But I've been refused entry to places countless times based on being a traveller and have been explicitly told that there were no other ethnicities that weren't allowed in.

JacquesHammer · 02/11/2019 14:42

It is so hard not to react with suspicion when there have been negative experiences that cost establishments in a small village tens of thousands of pounds. Wouldn’t you take action to prevent it happening again?

The action taken is never anything other than blocking vulnerable entrances with large vehicles.
