Obviously, you don't have to make an appointment with your MP as suggested, you could email or post.

Heres there have been travelling gypsies forever.
The Roma have been here as long as trade routes have been open.

As Drabarni has (very patiently) explained what is considered dirty to settled folk is often misunderstood (caravans often have the toilet removed. The idea that burying a shit in the woods is dirtier than carrying a shit in your transport does seem odd really.
Not being allowed to stop in the woods has the obvious implications.

It's an old tradition and belief going back centuries.
I'm not sure where the word marime originates, I'm not that far advanced with the language, it's very complicated and can vary between communities let alone countries.

And yes, one of my ancestry Romany branches dates back to 1600's in Wales. 1700's in Shropshire.

Just because I understand doesn't mean I agree with it

That’s what I don’t get. How can you understand it? The loss of someone’s livelihood? The almost loss of a real asset in the village - how can you understand why they’re doing that?

Dismantling dry stone walls to park on rugby pitches? Removing gate pillars to get into grazing fields?

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Bookings cancelled for weddings, restaurants, function rooms etc as well as holidays when the booking is suspected to be a gypsy family.

The below is just one thread about this from the top of my head but includes numerous examples. This really isn't OK.

Marime sounds like complete rubbish, it's a belief that goes back years, so what doesn't mean we have to respect it. Fed up with religions/communitys going"well it's cultural" it doesn't make it acceptable.

Women are separated during childbirth, periods, etc

Am I understanding this correctly?

Women on their periods are 'dirty'?Hmm

Report

woodhill · 02/11/2019 19:30

If you read Deuteronomy in the Old Testament periods are discussed and women are separated so this practice may have been influenced by this possibly from Middle Eastern roots?

Yes, it's a bodily fluid and considered Marime. The men aren't involved with childbirth, very similar to the past when men paced the corridors with a cigar.

Here'sMe
I'm sure there's a lot about your culture that wouldn't appeal to Romany women, but each to their own eh?

Jacques
You must be confused I didn't reply to your Rugby scenario. My post was before this and concerning the dirty protest or Marime.

Yes, part of the Middle East I believe. Romany words have a mix of various areas.
The word Marime, meaning dirty. Non-Polish; Fr. Greek "to dirty" (6.55); c.f. Skr mraks = smear (6.244)
Not sure if any linguistics understand this.

And the OP completely dismisses that marime is disgusting but it's ok as it's from a different culture.

Rather telling in fact.

@Drabarni

In the spirit of your so informative thread, I would be grateful for your thoughts on the rugby club being invaded twice in 17 weeks and my friends grazing land being trashed.

There is speculation that the lost tribe of Simeon may have links with the Romany heritage, there was also talk about some links to Wales as well to Judaism.

It's all very interesting

Jacques

I think it's absolutely disgusting for everyone. At one time a farmer would have been after them with his gun and rightly so.
I don't condone behaviour like this, why would I. It does nothing to ease tension or promote understanding.
Not just your case, that's bad enough but I do agree about the amount of mess left, there's no excuse.

However as disgusting as it is I have listed 2 reasons why they might do this, neither of which I'd ever condone, but understand why.

I hate that in Bolton there is a lovely site with really nice people who because they live behind a dual carriageway are constantly blamed for the shit that the supporters at the stadium dump. They have their own wheelie bins, the council empty them because they pay council tax, water rates and other utilities.

I have said upthread that I've pulled up bad behaviour, I have witnessed this. But to say it's indicative of a whole race is pure racism. I know you haven't done this, but the reason for this thread.

I have a huge extended family, it's unbelievable.
My cousins are Nurse, Policeman, Mobile Hairdresser (qualified), Financial advisor (qualified), accountant (qualified), Sahm (never Dad), Hotel Receptionist, Farmer, Teacher, I also hold PgCE, being the first of my generation to go to uni. That's just a few of us, holding down normal jobs. Some of these are on sites, some in streets, some in the country, city and towns.

My tribe were one of the first into Wales. The spoke a different language called Kale from Finland I believe. They continued this until 1960's I believe. My granny was born up a mountain in Wales and my gr uncle lived in an upturned water tank. My ancestors are well depicted in Literature, I'm really proud of them.
It really is fascinating, I'd love to learn more about the language and so sad it's dying out, but there are a couple of very large linguistic programmes running inc Man Uni, have a look.

Back to the thread, if anyone reading this does want to get their MP's to help many thanks.

I speak the language fluently every day but I don't know the origins, much like I'm guessing most people don't know the origins of the English language. I wish I could say I was shocked at the things being said on this thread, but actually there's nothing new at all.

And to those asking how soft play knew we were gypsies, some people can just notice. I've also had it in restaurants, a cinema, shopping centres and other places too.

Aw, pinky my lovely.

Language is a mix of everything from India to the UK, there is no one dialect I know this much.
It is interesting if you get to read research linking DNA and language to the early migration of the Rom, not the Dom a completely different tribe that took a different route.

I think it’s strange the way on these threads people say:

“Oh there is such a difference between Roma and the Irish travellers. Roma are so lovely, and ancient and clean, their lovely wagons and just pass through tinkling chimes and hosting storytelling circles whilst the dirty Irish travellers shit all over your leisure centre car park and leave bin liners full of nappies on the ground and local shops shoplifted within an inch of their life but they are not proper travellers... not like the Roma

Like that’s not Racist Hmm

Report

Pinkyyy · 03/11/2019 06:58

@Passthecherrycoke saying that Irish travellers are not the same as Romany gypsies is not racist, it's completely true. The term traveller is just widely used because it's easier, but I wouldn't like to be called Irish and Irish people wouldn't like to be called English. Times have moved on and you won't see many of us in wagons anymore, but the values are still very much the same.

@Drabarni thank you, that's quite interesting. I did know there were some Indian roots but that's about as far as my knowledge goes.

DriftingLeaves · 03/11/2019 07:26

How is it racist to say Irish travellers belong to a different race from Romanies?

I have no Russian DNA is it racist to say so? Only someone very stupid would think so.

The truth cannot be called racism, that's just daft.

Passthecherrycoke · 03/11/2019 08:05

Pinky I don’t think it’s racist to say Roma and irish travellers are different races. They are of course, I haven’t said otherwise

I think it’s racist to talk about how wonderful Roma are because they’re not like those filthy criminal Irish travellers Confused
