Please tell me someone else has seen the thread about job interviews, where a poster commented about an interviewee turning up in "thread bear trousers"?

I know what the poster means - bear the full brunt/get the full force - but can’t quite see where thrift comes from!

Yes, they probably meant ‘thrust’. Thrift is such a very wrong word in that context that I suspect a typo and autocorrect - I is next to u on the keyboard, and if I deliberately enter a typo ‘thrist’, I am offered as alternatives Christ, thirst and thrift, but not thrust. So it could have been worse!

Seen on a thread today about health that someone was fobbed off but they actually had newmonia. As the writer said, it's discussting and appauling.

Surely it's 'apauling'. You know, like in a folk song. Some village maiden is determinedly pursuing a lad called Paul, and at every opportunity she goes a-pauling.

You'd hope not, given that I've always heard 'tomming' as a verb for the behaviour of male cats looking for a mate, and given the slang term 'tom' for a lady of negotiable affection, to use Terry Pratchett's phrase.

So a maiden probably wouldn't be able to go tomming for very long?
