What's wrong with 'Princess Catherine'?

It's not her official title. She is the Princess of Wales. Prior to that she was the Duchess of Cambridge. (Or the appropriate Scottish title when in Scotland.)

Some elements of the media may refer to her as Princess Catherine, but the BBC should know better. (But then it was the BBC who once referred to the late Queen as Her Royal Highness, so this isn't a new thing.)

She's the Duchess of Rothesay when in Scotland, I think.

It’s my time to shine! I’ve been keeping a list of errors I see online and I add to it when I see a new one. Yes these are all real 😵‍💫

Incredibly sad I know but at least it took away my urge to correct people. I started off tracking the site I found the error but I didn’t keep it up sorry!

I love ulgar. 😀

It could be a really ugly ogre.
Or not so vulgar. Just ulgar.

I live in a country where English often not a first language, and one that always makes me smile is when someone posts sleepers instead of slippers.
And for a dressing gown - morning coat, which is a direct translation.

Where English is a first language though, I do judge slightly.

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 08:27

@GameofPhones , knickers are drawers not draws.

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 08:34

Princess Diana wasn't Princess Diana until she became divorced. She was referred to as Princess Diana though.

I can't get worked up about this but can about articles that refer to Kate Middleton, unless they are referring to her before she married.

HelenaWilson · 11/03/2026 09:32

'Right of passage'

Princess Diana wasn't Princess Diana until she became divorced. She was referred to as Princess Diana though.

She was Diana, Princess of Wales after her divorce. Princess Diana was never correct.

I agree about articles referring to Catherine as 'Kate Middleton'.

She was never Princess Diana - she was Diana, Princess of Wales.

She was called it but it wasn't her official title.
It's derailing the thread.

Morning all. I’m the OP but I seem to have buggered up my username. Oh well; just to let you know I’m here. I think the issue around Princess Catherine and Catherine, Princess of Wales is just semantics really. It doesn’t matter too much. We know to whom you’re referring. I much prefer the glaring howlers like “right a covering note”. Not with a job application surely! He’d get a “no” from me. Anyway, keep those eye’s out 👀

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 10:13

@Whosthetabbynow , you're not @Catspace , I'm @Catspace . Smile

@isthismylifenow , here's a dressing gown for you.
From my observations, those who were formally taught English as a second language often have better than mother tongue speakers.

bod111 · 11/03/2026 10:27

Pedant feathers ruffled upon hearing another mum repeatedly characterising her daughter’s friendship groups as ‘clicks’ or ‘clicky’ rather than ‘cliquey’ or ‘cliques’ - but maybe this was a deliberate mum-slang adoption (help me here MN) and I’m hopelessly out of touch. Maybe I am not in the right click.

NAVAL GAZING

I had some fun making spelling memes.

GameofPhones · 11/03/2026 11:07

Whoops my picture didn't load. Will try later.

sesquipedalian · 11/03/2026 11:26

I’ve just read, “My parents had a 'sweetie draw'.” What is it with all these draws…

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 11:26

Blush I meant "From my observations, those who were formally taught English as a second language often have better English than mother tongue speakers."

Aaah, looking out to sea at the ships

Ohpleeeease · 11/03/2026 11:32

Mine’s not a written one, but it’s “wallah!” for “voilà!”. And an increasingly common one in MN, “bare with me”.

You're not familiar with Pedants' Corner then, I take it? Wink

Whosthetabbynow · 11/03/2026 14:04

@SchnizelVonKrumm My thread isn’t about semantics. It’s about misspellings and using words in the wrong context.

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 14:32

@SchnizelVonKrumm , read the OP.

Yes, I wrote it. It’s my thread but my username has been deleted by MNHQ for some reason. I did explain that in a previous post. Please lighten up. These threads are usually a bit of fun-poking.

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 15:22

@Whosthetabbynow , are you @SchnizelVonKrumm ? I'm confused. Confused

Whosthetabbynow · 11/03/2026 15:25

Yes. I was on the Mumsnet app. It all got confusing and my username got deleted.
