The mind bugles

I just can’t be asked any more!

PrettyLittleRose · 10/08/2026 12:24

Just seen on Facebook 'are granson as just finished raking leeves for the lady over the road. good lad always as to help, bless him.'

It's a woman - 60 years old. Her 38 year old daughter writes exactly the same. I despair for humanity. Why - and HOW do these people not know they are spelling so many words incorrectly, and also using incorrect words?! 'ARE granson!' It's OUR, and it's grandson! There is a 'D' in it! Also, it's has not as, and leaves, not leeves! FML!

It’s lack of education. No reading skills therefore no writing skills. If you don’t read you’re unable to write. It puzzles me as to why these people feel the need to advertise their illiteracy to the world. Baffling. Social media has a lot to answer for.

I suppose if you don’t know it’s wrong then why wouldn’t you? You could say it is a win for phonics.

How's this for phonics-to-the-rescue: "She was told by a sycholagist to write her thoughts down"?

And creatively, on R4 this morning, "a monumentous queue"

Whosthetabbynow · 10/08/2026 17:26

Shocking x

The purely rational part of me says that it’s high time we dropped phonetic anachronisms such as the silent p. Those who cared would surely still know that ‘sych’ was derived from the Greek psyche.

Virtually every FB post on my local village board is like this. Makes me wonder what goes on in schools.

Hmmm, yeah, on my village Facebook page - and the local market town one - you see the most atrocious spelling and grammatical errors from some people. It's like they don't even care. Confused

I suppose it’s hard to care about something being wrong, when you don’t know it’s wrong!

Where would it end? Drop the h too?

They don’t care and what’s more it all goes unchallenged which confirms (to them) their illiteracy. Imagine correcting all the grammatically incorrect posts; you’d be ex-communicated 😂

Whosthetabbynow · 11/08/2026 15:13

On our local Nextdoor app someone is advertising a mobility scotter for sale.

Why not Sike, to rhyme with Nike?🤔

AlbieJiggered · 12/08/2026 00:13

Sikey surely because some say Nike to rhyme with hike.

Nike the Greek goddess doesn’t rhyme with hike.

Another gem from a local Facebook page discussing a long-gone TV shop -

"Bought a Sony Trinitron 26" TV there backing the day"

Because I’m not psychic and didn’t know whether or not you were one of the people you alluded to who pronounce Nike to rhyme with hike. And of course you may not be the only person reading the thread - I’m sure there are quite a lot of people who think Nike is a made-up brand name.

There's a John Nike Leisure Centre near me. It's named after John Nike - the surname rhymes with hike.
(Not to be confused with the Madejski stadium, that seems to be called Madgesky by a lot of people, many with season tickets)

The brand Nike is named after Nike the goddess of victory, but some say Nigh-key and some say Nigh-k, in the same way as some say Ad-ee-das and some say Addy-das. (I say Nikey and Addy-das but am not too bothered what others say.)

When I was growing up everyone said adeedass. Then one day some people started saying adidass. I know the latter is the right way but I can't bring myself to say it as so used to saying it the old way.

I can remember when Linux was Ligh-nux. I think it was meant to sound like Linnix, but I've only heard one person say it that way. Most seem to say Linnux.

We said ad-ee-dass when I was at school. I had an Adidas bag and Adidas Kick trainers that I thought were great.

Tallisker · 13/08/2026 07:49

All Day I Dream About Sex. That’s what Adidas meant when I was at school 😆

Exactly!

All these "Your going to..." etc. It's so common, it's starting to look correct to me!

I am now starting to do a double take when your/you're etc are used correctly.
