Hi all, it's that time! We're v excited about DD's first piercing but this time we're thinking of a stone, not just plain gold? Any suggestions?!?!?

Years and years ago when I worked in east London, the midwives would pierce the babies ears at birth - crazy to look back on.

Seems crazy to certain sections of society now - but actually probably a lot safer than some piercing places around now!

I do have good taste yes.
Also in the UK it is well known that having babies' and toddlers' ears pierced is something that is only done by certain sectors of society, and is viewed as tacky and chavvy behaviour. You can see that by reading the majority of comments on this thread.

How is ear piercing mutilation? Earrings can be left out and the holes will close over. It's not like they're getting those huge tunnels that will never close over.

Assuming you're in the UK you know exactly what type of people I'm talking about and it's silly to pretend otherwise.

Not as safe as not piercing them at all though.

My holes have never closed over but they’re also very wonky so it’s impossible to wear earrings. My ears were pierced at 18 months old - it’s the worst of both worlds: pierced ears that won’t heal over but also unable to wear earrings.

If my ears had been pierced when I was older there wouldn’t have been these issues.

Ooh, think of how happy your parents would have been though. They got the joy of holding you down screaming so someone could punch holes in your body.

I know, it’s mental. My mum still thinks it’s a funny story - I was saying something the other day about babies not getting pierced ears any more and she was most surprised!

I’m a very ancient 49 now though so I guess things were different almost half a century ago!?! 🤷‍♀️ I can’t imagine ever putting my baby or young child through it but then we’re not big conformers to social pressure tbh so I don’t think it would have mattered what the norm was - we wouldn’t have done it.
