Hi all, it's that time! We're v excited about DD's first piercing but this time we're thinking of a stone, not just plain gold? Any suggestions?!?!?

none

At 2.5 years old? Appalling. Why not wait till at least the poor child is old enough to ask for it and do proper aftercare herself.
My rule was not in primary school and had to be old enough to clean them herself, daughter had them done in the summer prior to secondary school, had asked for years. 10 year old granddaughter is not interested. I loathe seeing young toddlers and babies with earrings. I also hate seeing boys and men with earrings, looks dreadful, so if my son had ever wanted it done I'd have made him wait till 18, fortunately he never wanted it done.

@Ponderingwindow There are people who exist but you pay for it.

Piercers who do children at any age prefer babies or older children. This is because toddlers move.

I only know because my DD has been asking to have her ears pierced since she was 4. So I looked it up when she was 5.

The places I found use guns.

So it was a definite nope without pointing out the timing and logistics e.g. can only have them done at start of school holidays (unfortunately she's in holiday clubs for specific activities), there aren't any nearby.

My DD has gone to nursery and now school with random girls with pierced ears. I told her to ask them where they got them done and virtually all of them got them done abroad.

What if the child asked for it to be done?

This morning my 2.5yo asked me if he could have the Gruffalo over for dinner tonight.

Have you got any owl ice cream?

Presumably your two year old sat you down and gave a compelling reason why she wanted her ears piercing and you simply couldn’t refused based on her mature and well researched conversation?

Waffle78 · 18/11/2024 19:26

Has she asked to have them done? At 2 1/2 I'm guessing she hasn't. It should be her choice.

Womblingmerrily · 18/11/2024 19:26

Children cannot consent to this painful and unnecessary procedure.

Cultural norms that cause harm and pain to children should not be tolerated - female genital mutilation is a cultural issue - is that okay too?

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 18/11/2024 19:26

@MauveOrPossiblyTaupe I wont ever forget hearing a screaming pre school kid having her ears pierced with mum and gran holding her down!!! just cruel! leave her alone and let her choose to do it when she is much older! dont just do it because YOU want to do it!

Merrymess · 18/11/2024 19:26

Oh dear. Light the MN blue touch paper and get your bingo dobbers ready.

At 2.5yo , my DS would've wanted Barney the mega purple'n'green dinosaur .

gettingolderbutcooler · 18/11/2024 19:27

She might need a bit of lip filler too.

AmyDudley · 18/11/2024 19:28

What if the child asked for it to be done?

How cruel. Poor little girl.

AgnesX · 18/11/2024 19:29

Excited? What's so exciting about piercing a toddler? Very odd.

Thanks everyone! Some strong views. I'm going to research this and think again about the idea.

Ignore the twattish bullies. Some people seem to have forgotten that this is not AIBU.

In America, parents often take their child to their paediatrician to get earrings at this sort of age.

Some mothers in the UK like to look down their noses at people who get their child's ears pierced because it makes them feel superior. Sad really 🤷🏻‍♀️I'll bet some of their parenting is highly questionable.

Merrymess · 18/11/2024 19:30

Have we had a 'it's chavvy' yet?

Notlikelysaidthedragontothefly · 18/11/2024 19:30

Go with a stud- a stone might catch on clothing etc but a stud will be round and smooth. I can remember getting mine done at 9, I doubt your daughter will be saying at 30 years old ‘when I was two and a half and you pierced my ears!! 😠’.

YellowTassels · 18/11/2024 19:30

Hoops look best on little ones 👌🏼

shellyleppard · 18/11/2024 19:30

Best kind of earrings....none!!! Wait until she's old enough to make up her own mind

In the UK? I bet they did nothing of the sort.
