In the UK? I bet they did nothing of the sort.

In some countries it's quite normal! Not saying it's right but it does happen, usually almost at birth, before leaving hospital.

Says who?

Let me see. People who have the sense to know that it is a shit idea to pierce a young child's ears for their own vanity. Let them decide for themselves.

Years and years ago when I worked in east London, the midwives would pierce the babies ears at birth - crazy to look back on.

My brother had twin girls and he waited for the twins to be old enough to decide if they wanted their ears pierced, one got them done at 6, the other never wanted rhem pierced. They are 21 years old now

It's a pia on PE days.

Parents of children in Primary school who chose to have their child pierced should have to sign to indemnify the school for accidents caused by earrings.

ThisCosyPoster · 18/11/2024 21:26

I couldn't inflict pain on a small child, just for a bit of jewellery. They are too young to understand. Their ears look best natural.

Wishfives · 18/11/2024 21:28

@ThisCosyPoster spelling error ? Couldn't
You caught it in time :)

I can see Sister Evangelina doing this, tbf.

Piercing the ears of a child that young is child abuse IMO. And no. “Cultural” isn’t a reason to abuse and mutilate small children. FGM is cultural too, I don’t see people defending that.

nildesparandum · 18/11/2024 21:41

It used to be the custom where I live for baby boy's to have just one ear pierced.
The reason being so he would look hard!
Yes a baby boy looking like a very hard gangster.

Starlia · 18/11/2024 21:43

Don’t mutilate your toddler’s body.

No religion or culture pierces ears at 2.
@mumsnet - this is a bot

Her birth month stone ,not with a gun though , take her to a proper piercing place . I had mine’s done at three months , not a peep

Dreadful. So tacky.

Greentreesandbushes · 18/11/2024 22:01

The best kind is the one that pick for themselves when at an age to do so, willingly.

Children cannot consent to this painful and unnecessary procedure.

Cultural norms that cause harm and pain to children should not be tolerated - female genital mutilation is a cultural issue - is that okay too?

Would that include male genital...? Circumcision for boys seems to be an ignored issue of a non-issue in the UK or am I wrong? Why the rage for a girl's eat love but not male genitalia?

It's reasonably rare in the UK and very much not ok.

It's also not OK to punch holes in a baby's flesh to hang decorations from. It'll be illegal eventually.

Wishfives · 18/11/2024 23:16

@Mamaghanouch "girl's eat love" ?

Isatis · 18/11/2024 23:46

Why would you want to mutilate a two year old?

ChristmasCheesecake · 18/11/2024 23:56

At 2.5 years old? Appalling, why didn’t she have them done at 6 months old? You’ve left it far too late 🤪

What accidents?

Plenty of girls had ears pierced when I was at primary school and we all wore earrings in PE. We weren't even told what earrings we could and couldn't wear probably because in the 80s and before that parents had common sense. It's only when we went to secondary school, so would choose our own earrings, were we given rules on what earrings we were allowed to wear and told when doing certain sports to take them out. This caused problems as some kids had left their small hoops in for years so couldn't take the out.
