Piercing DD's (2.5) ears - best kind of stud?

Hi all, it's that time! We're v excited about DD's first piercing but this time we're thinking of a stone, not just plain gold? Any suggestions?!?!?

OP posts:

OP you will probably have a rough time on here! However in my family all the women get their ears pierced very young, I had mine at 18months. I don’t remember it. We’ve always gone with plain gold studs, high carat, At least 14ct.

I have friends who live here but come from other European countries, who were shocked that they weren’t asked at the hospital after birth! Apparently other countries pierce after birth and put in a thread to create the hole!

Yep, parenting forum for parenting advice. My advice is, getting your young child’s ears pierced is shit parenting.

Funny how when I said this my post got deleted 🙄

Is this even legal?

It’s just so tacky, not to mention cruel to inflict unnecessary suffering on a 2.5yr old no matter how fleeting the pain might be. Urgh.

pimplebum · 18/11/2024 20:13

I called the police and reported child abuse in claire’s accessories for piercing a babies ears

if I came round your house and stuck a needle through any part of your child’s body you would call the police too

Artistbythewater · 18/11/2024 20:13

Absolutely not. Just don’t.

What if the child asked for it to be done?

This morning my 2.5yo asked me if he could have the Gruffalo over for dinner tonight.

My 4.5 yo got upset because I wouldn't buy her a large glass skull full of vodka in Costco. I guess I should have interpreted that to mean she's ready for a few screwdrivers on the weekend, since she asked.

In threads like these, I guess it's useful for people to remember Mumsnet is a majority UK site so understandably most opinions will reflect how society sees the specific issue. I think people are reflecting their "disgust" from their cultural perspective.

If you can find someone will to do this... don't.

Almost all insurance requires a minimum age of 3+ now.

Even the local qualified on the internet after a 1 day certificate course bought on Ebay 'gun' piercers in a hairdressers back room aren't doing it since the insurance changes. There was a spate of announcements before the summer holidays that places like that (because I don't know any proper qualified piercer that would do it at all) where no longer offering it due to it invalidating insurance terms.

Which means anyone willing likely isn't sterile or safe/suitable if they are operating without even basic insurance.

Reasons to overrule a child's bodily autonomy: medical, hygiene, health.

Culture is never an excuse.

Why? Culturally they are best placed to assist with OPs enquiry.

@Dirtyprotest Where did the op say she from a traveler background?

Cozylozy · 18/11/2024 20:20

Please don’t, let your child decide it’s what she when she is a lot older. Do the right thing

Cozylozy · 18/11/2024 20:20

Wants

Ocsober · 18/11/2024 20:20

Stick on - that’s the only earrings a 2.5 year old should have.

Leave her ears alone!!!

She didnt. But they are better placed to answer rather than 6 pages of mums saying its a bad idea.

This is interesting! And actually good advice!

I am genuinely surprised with the backlash over this thread though!

It seems very normalised where we live, although not particularly with the middle class families.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 18/11/2024 20:20

There is usually a range of first piercing studs you can use - plain gold/silver or some with a small stone or shape. I would go for a needle piercing as it's less damaging to the skin.

sadly yes, I was in Claires once and a lady with a baby was arguing with a staff member who refused to pierce he Baby's ears. The issue was that apparently the mother didn't have the babies birth certificate and so couldn't prove her baby was 4 MONTHS OLD!!!!
I judged like fuck that day.
