porcamiseria · 13/04/2010 11:03

My DP is Italian, very Sicilian!!! baby is 2 and we have numero due coming August time.

I LOVE it there and if things go to plan maybe retire early there? But its very very remote , kind if like if you go there, we will never come back! If you want to travel out of Season be prepeared to spend alot of € and waste alot of time

anyway. sorry to hijack but good to know this thread is here

Bucharest that epi thread is pissing me off now but still compulisviely going on it, gah...

Sputnik · 13/04/2010 11:05

Porcamiseria, I have used this site a couple of times, no problems.

You are very welcome to hang out on this thread by the way, if only so we can preface every other sentence with "Porcamiseria".

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 11:13

Lol yes, it'd be nice to have the possibility to start every other sentence with a good old Porca Miseria !

I've never been to Pantelleria, but I'm pretty sure it must be amazing. As I said we go to the Aeolian Islands almost every summer, and they are pretty difficult to reach too!
I'm not sure I could live there permanently (I am a big city kind of person, I know it from experience!), but I do think they are one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to.
The deep blue sea, those volcanic rocks, the wild flowers, it just takes my breath away!

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 11:14

Oh and congratulations on your pg!

Bucharest · 13/04/2010 11:50

Oh, yes Franca, dontcha know that you're not a proper woman unless you do it crouching on all fours in a field, sniffing lavender oil and listening to treehugger music?

Pah. (and what really really irritates me on those threads is that despite people like me pointing out that actually my epidural made me dilate from 3-10cm in about 20 mins they definitely prolong labour for everyone blah blah.

Mind you, I got called sexist yesterday (moi?) for pointing out that (IMO) parental leave tended to be weighted in favour of women because we tend to be the ones who give birth and breastfeed.....

MN in general is very tetchy at the moment I notice.

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 12:00

...oh yes, of course. It's part of the MN decalogue

Rosa · 13/04/2010 12:33

FGS sexist for suggesting that - well that merits a good Porca Miseria....Ciao to the RL Porcamiseria and congrats on No2. I am British but live in Italy . I have also used nido di grazia they are ok but I have used another and am trying to think what it is I will have a search on the web and come back to you.
Well guys its DONE..So the fun starts now and our savings are almost finished so the Architect will get paid a rate or piu in la... However I had a spritz to celebrate it went to my head and I cooked panna and proscuitto for lunch as today was a celebration ( Diet was going well!)

www.ebaby.it/spedizioni.html

www.culladelbimbo.it/index.

ARe the 2 I have used in the past.
E babay says it delivers to the islands and Culla Del Bimbo seems to imply it as well.

Sputnik · 13/04/2010 12:48

Ah yes culladelbimbo I used them too but couldn't remember the name.

Rosa! Welcome to the mortgage club! Did you spend 3 hours trying not to fall asleep and listening to your name, date and place of birth being repeated in full about a million times in a stuffy notaio's, or is that just in Rome?

busynotbored · 13/04/2010 12:50

Hello ladies,I've been naughty and not posted for ages and now feel bad about posting when I need advice !! I'll try and be a more regular poster
So can you give me some opinions on baby names ?
I'm 22 weeks and we have decided to go with an Italian name. I don't care what people (ie my sister) think, we are an Italian family (I'm British but have behave more Italian than British according to DH!!), Italian is the first language at home and although this baby will never have lived in Italy will be brought up alla Siciliana !!!!! Sorry just felt the need to justify our reasoning.
Anyway for a boy we have pretty much decided on Salvatore. Its my favourite Italian name (huge Cinema Paradiso and Giuliano fan !!)although I am slightly concerned as our surname is quite hard for the brits to pronounce and poor lad will have to be constantly correcting people.
For girls I like Alessandra, Emilia and DH's favourite is Federica.
I can take any suggestions, critiscms ( I am NOT hormonal and will NOT start to cry if u disagree with me !!!)or comments so please feel free !!!!
xxxxxxxx
Oh by the way my old screen name was michymama

Rosa · 13/04/2010 13:02

Oh yes Sput and I gt told off for not doing every letter in my name I had to keep going back and putting the o in my middle name as I never sign with my middle name!
Hi old Michymama - remember you well - Congrats on No 2 I am not that keen on Salvatore but I am no good at boys names.
I like Emilia ( dd2 is the British version).
HAving said that I do like Emiliano !
Alessia,Sabrina,Elena,MAddalena....There are lots I like !

Bucharest · 13/04/2010 13:33

Hello Busy!
Well, Salvatore will certainly be popular when you do visit the Homeland no?

I shouldn't worry about Brits pronouncing it, surely in UK schools there are enough EU immigrant families for them to have got their heads round that now?

I do prefer your girl's names, I have to admit... I like Alessandra a lot, not keen on Federica....

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 13:44

Rosa, congratulations on your new flat! How exciting !

Hello bnb, I remember you and congrats on your pregnancy!

I like the name Salvatore. It's very traditional. I live in Northern Italy, so it's pretty unusual here, but it's probably still very popular in southern italy.
Boys names I like: Giovanni, Lorenzo (very popular), Pietro, Guido, Nicola, Antonio... and my fav: Mario (which not many agree with!)

I like Federica and Emilia, not so keen on Alessandra. I like Caterina, Bianca, Sara, Viola, Anna, Maria, Antonia, etc

Sputnik · 13/04/2010 13:44

Sorry Busy, I had enough problems naming my own DCs!
Boys names are particularly hard IMO, there really aren't any Italian ones that can sound "non foreign" to english ears IYSWIM, so may as well go for an all-out italian name.

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 13:45

Another girl's name I love and no one else is keen on is Luisa.

Sputnik · 13/04/2010 13:51

Yes, Giudo is nice and maybe less of a mouthful with Italian surname. Or Matteo? He could shorten it to Mat to anglicize it if he chooses to later on.

Sputnik · 13/04/2010 13:52

Chiara?

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 13:57

Chiara is lovely imho. ANd I like Matteo too.

busynotbored · 13/04/2010 14:48

Thankyou ladies !! I have just been speaking via facebook to a friends son called Salvo, and a gorgeous chappy at that !!! , he lived in Uk for a while and said he had no problems getting people to pronounce his name, so Salvatore it is !!
Franca - I love Nicola or Nicolo but Nicola is a girls name here so thats out the bag. Giovanni is actually my FIL's name and we broke years of tradition with DS by not naming him Giovanni !! Every other boy is called Giovanni is our village.
I know Federica will get pronounced Frederica here so that is putting me off slightly.
BTW Rosa - I'm on no 3 now !!
We're off to Sicily for a week in May and no doubt once DH's family hear the names they'll be putting their two penneth worth to which I will take no notice but DH will

porcamiseria · 13/04/2010 14:58

Rosa/Sputnik thanks so so much for the websites, will check tonight

Busy, well fancy that we are both PG with half Sicilian babies! I am 22 weeks too! I was showing my collegue your post as loads of your names are on my list too!

I LOVE Chiara, but its DPs goddaughters name so we cant use it.
Matteo is cool too.

I love Luisa but its Zias name so another one we cant use

TheMysticMasseuse · 13/04/2010 16:49

Hello!!!

Hello Porcamiseria (great screen name but please don't allow anyone to shorten it to Porca ). And hello Michy! i remember you from BC days- glad to hear things are going well for you.

I admit I am not crazy on Salvatore, chiefly because all the nicknames originating from it are a bit imo (there is a guy in my father's village who goes by Turuzzo!!!). I absolutely adore Emilia, otoh.

PM- how about Clara?

TheMysticMasseuse · 13/04/2010 16:53

btw, i am italian, with two dds aged 4 and almost 2, and currently live in Switzerland after 10 years in London.

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 17:09

Yo, masseuse!

Francagoestohollywood · 13/04/2010 17:11

Actually, I think that me, Masseuse, and Sputnik could interest you in some Baltimore names...

In fact, I think that we live in the hope that one of us gets unexpectedly pregnant and we can start dropping names from The Wire

TheMysticMasseuse · 13/04/2010 17:25

If I have another girl, she is totally going to be called Shakima- in honour of my B'more hero!!!!

A boy, on the other hand, would HAVE to be called Bunk.

Last night, I dreamed of Rawls

Otoh, if i were to get a dog (or rather, a dawg), i would probably call it Bodie
