MM existential reasons are very high in my book of life so if you are still unhappy in a year I'd seriously think of going back. Your Dh surely can try to find another job he is not bored with.
You should both try to be on an equal level in terms of life and work satisfaction imo. And a bit of give and take will not go amiss.
I agree with tarcetti try to see it as a year plan. Not a lifetime one. you should have a say in where you spend your life if one can have the choice and forgive my frankness but it does seem to me that both you and dh could get a decent job in london again. Ok to have no 3 if you have always wanted no 3. what better time. lots of time and possibility of making new friends through antenatal etc.

tommycarcetti · 08/02/2010 17:06

Yes, am sure your dh will be pleased that you gave geneva a go, but if you are not happy by the end of the year, come back to london!!!!

Have a really boring housekeeping question, i have blinds that are white wood, the string has gone grey with dirt, how can i get it clean without taking the blinds off? The slats are easy to clean but i am always left with shitty strings...fuck I am boring!

BananaGio · 08/02/2010 17:06

agree with Tommy and Carcetti-see it as a year. If at the end of the year you like it then problem solved, if you don't then it is only a year and you go back.
DP called, the doctor has called him (probably pushed by FIL). Anyway DP called me straight afterwards- said there was something showing but the doctor said wasn't a tumour, he thought may be TB related but they wouldn't know without further investigation. Didnt tell him on the phone I knew, will save that for when he gets back! He is still going to docs tomorrow to discuss in more detail. Am still worried although relieved obviously said wasn't a tumour although from my excessive internet research over the last few days my understanding was that couldn't be ruled out by x ray (obviously 2 days googling puts me way ahead of GP with 40 years experience )

that should be agree with Tommy and Pippi!

Francagoestohollywood · 08/02/2010 17:25

Masseuse, I totally agre with tommy, pippi and gio to see it as a 1 yr experience and then take it from there.
My dh didn't have a clue of what Exeter was really about, he loved his job and that was enough. He still ignores where most places were .

Gio, so glad the dr phoned your dh and that he rang you back to discuss it with you. Tell him about fil. And leet us know how it goes tomorrow, we'll keep everything crossed for you dear

Francagoestohollywood · 08/02/2010 17:29

Bucharest, how did the pagelle go???

TheMysticMasseuse · 08/02/2010 18:41

thanks for listening and sympathetic advice. i think i am just having a particularly crappy day so see everything even bleaker than it is. unfortunately have been taking it out on dd1 so now feel even crappier about that.

and thanks for advice on other thread.

Gio- good luck for tomorrow, let us know what the doc says.

Penthesileia · 08/02/2010 22:07

Hi everyone - marking place - should be writing lecture, not lurking on MN... Sigh.

MM - for you. It's so hard being somewhere new. I feel for you.

I've been to Geneva. I was mostly quite scared, tbh, by how cleanly it was. It is rather bland. The lake is nice, though, I seem to remember. And the air. The air is clean. Like, really - for a city, iyswim. That was weird.

All the best tomorrow, Gio.

What is pagella, please?

Must go. Need to work. Arrrrggghhhh....

Francagoestohollywood · 08/02/2010 22:20

Penthe, pagella is a piece of official papers where the teachers write marks. So... Italiano - 9, matematica - 8 and so on. Until 2 yrs ago you had a "giudizio", but effing gelmini deemed it was too 1968s and "liberal" so it's back to marks, even at primary school, which I think is bollocks...

Masseuse, I hope you are feeling better... I hope this gets a smile on your face: "Fvck Presbo"

Penthesileia · 08/02/2010 22:36

Hey franca . Thanks.

Grrr. Still here - got sucked into the make-up thread.

I am in so much trouble for tomorrow.

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 08:31

Thanks Franca, the one think that keeps me going is (spoiler alert the Wire Season 4 clip coming up) this, from about the 1:20 mark...

oh and this, the crime scene to end all crime scenes (this is from season 1 so i assume all you wirettes have already seen it)

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 08:32

Penthe, bet your lecture rocked, i think you worry too much, you are clearly awesome. And also meant to say, i am sorry you are feeling overwhelmed (from other thread). it can be hard to do everything... hwo are your chidlcare arrangements working out? i find that's the key to keeping your head together...

snowing like crazy here today, off to google "how to drive on snow"....

Bucharest · 09/02/2010 09:00

Hello!

Gio- good that your dp called you.....how bad is it that you are undoubtedly right about your googling putting you ahead of your doctor??????

MM- for you, and believe me, I do know how you feel....it is early days still, and I'm sure a lot of it is to do with not feeling at home yet, yet having to make all these efforts for dd to feel at home etc, finding her friends etc...My friend was in Geneva when I was in Brussels at uni and she loved it. But she's very much a pelliccia and Luis Vuitton kind of girl and loved the "classy" aspect of it.....

Am very proud Mummy this morning, please ignore me if I gush too much! Pagella has 8 for storia and 9 for everything else except English (lol) which has 10....teacher says dd is "un capolavoro" "la tipica inglese" "testarda, cocciuta" and speaks like a 10-11 yr old.(apparently she is spokesperson and thinks if the class has worked too much she says "maestra, siamo stanchi, penso che questo basta per oggi") She also spends about 15 minutes in the bagno every time she goes socialising

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 09:06

Buch, can I just say, reading about your dd has cheered me up so mcuh, she sounds like she's a wonderful little girl, and all kudos to you! Bet you were chuffed at "la tipica inglese" comment

Rosa · 09/02/2010 12:31

Wow what a star Buch - Well deserved proud mum emotion needed there !
I have found some shampoo, baby wash , and cream all SLS and paraben free in the health food shop. Tried the cream out its a bit thick but it did the job on MR chubby cheeks in the bitter wind that has thankfully vanished! Shampoo will try on me first !!!!

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2010 12:35

Bucharest, well done your clever dd !!!!

Penthe, yes, I agree with MM, it is clear you are awesome!

Gio, keeping our fingers crossed.

MM, chatted today with a dear friend of mine, who's got lots of relatives living in Geneva. He has always loved the place, mostly because it's compact, with great parks and lots of cinemas ... boh... I agree it's early days, and trust me, I know how depressing early days can be. I think you should start skiing

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 12:52

I think the problem is- London is great, i lived in a great area, there was everything on our doorstep for both children and grownups, tbh nothing can come up to those standards. except maybe great nature. doesnt help much if you are not a nature person

plus i have discovered yesterday that we have to pay for all doctors and prescriptions up to a ridiculously high threshold. so here i was hoping to cheer myself up with free prozac chiropractor and that's all gone up in smoke. Another great thing about the UK, fab free health service and excellent private insurance through work...

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2010 13:02

MM I know. Sfondi una porta aperta with me re London. I know how fab it is, I love big cities and I don't do nature, unless it is the mediterranean sea or a good snowy slope. But I also know how draining it is not to find a single good aspect about a place (I did this for years with exeter and it wasn't productive at all...)... I don't want to patronize or anything, but just trying to find out a few positives

What a pain re health care. Yes, I think it's pretty expensive there.

tommycarcetti · 09/02/2010 14:42

Am not a nature person either, so I can see where you are coming from, still if you spend the next few months looking for work and taking weekend trips to visit i dintorni, treat yourself to new clothes and books, massage, spa, god, i sound very shallow, but try and make the most of it, knowing that you can come back to London. Could you persuade dp to find work in New York? Now that would be a great place to be out of work in for a little while.

tommycarcetti · 09/02/2010 14:47

Or even Baltimore, so your kids can pick up a bit of Baltimorese? Yo!

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 15:34

I could find work in DC- totally commutable from Baltimore (hey, Jimmy did it for a fuck in season 3!). Now that's a nice fantasy to indulge....

Of course... Need to think positive.... Hmmmmm

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 15:54

i did this stupid test on FB to see whcih Wire character I am... I am Kima

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2010 17:10

Kima is cool. I wonder who'd I be... hope not Donette

Agree with Tommy, I think I could spend a lifetime in NYC without being bored one single day... of course I'd have to have the famous "portafoglio d'Onassis", which my mother referred to as: "Can't possibly buy you that toy/jumper, non ho mica il portafoglio d'Onassis"

Masseuse, with hindsight, I really regret having spend so much time in Exeter being so negative about everything, it stopped me doing so many things

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2010 17:10

spent

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/02/2010 19:11

re portafoglio di onassis, today we had a new babysitter come in the afternoon for a couple of hours (sanity at the end of the tunnel!) and dd1 was telling her how much she loves barbie (new thing, don't get me started) and the babysitter asked her so do you have any barbies, and dd went no, they are too expensive... I felt terrible
