I have green dye and peppermint flavouring awaiting my next batch...

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 09:37

It's for the scent rather than the taste, Pamina

Rock salt doesn't work - makes the dough gritty. As does dishwasher salt...

MuminBrum · 10/05/2007 09:43

I refused to sacrifice my Doves Farm organic stone-ground flour to playdough - I went and bought Somerfields basic flour, 33p for a kilo.
By the way, someone was asking about natural black colouring - black jellybabies are coloured with vegetable carbon, which is pretty natural.

natural yes but would you want to eat it?

sorry that was re: the vegetable carbon

Pamina banana - what a fab idea

I have a secret weakness for jellybabies, so yes, I would eat it! And the nice crispy bits on roast veg are vegetable carbon, so I expect you would eat it too?

TooTicky · 10/05/2007 12:26

Ooh, thanks MuminBrum. Unfortunately cake needs to be finished in the next two hours so no time to buy extras. Or can I just char some veg?

SoupDragon · 10/05/2007 12:46

Not when it's added to something containing a cup and a half of salt I wouldn't, Muminbrum!

MuminBrum · 10/05/2007 13:30

What are you all on about?

TooTicky · 10/05/2007 14:07

I'm talking about my ds1's birthday cake, now finished. No black icing, just dark chocolate, but my (slightly wishy washy) green is spinach and nettle.

misdee · 10/05/2007 14:10

we now have blue playdough with purple sparkles, yellow with irridescant sparkles and green moss coloured playdough with green sparkles.

i have glitter all over me and my hands are green. lol

Jenkeywoo · 10/05/2007 15:23

Thank you for the recipe, I had no idea how therapeutic it could be. Just made yellow with lemon scent and gold sparkles and lilac with lavender scent and silver sparkles. So we have lovely playdough but nothing for dinner as DD is up from her nap and I spent the whole time she was asleep making playdough!

SoupDragon · 10/05/2007 17:58

Somewhere on Mumsnt I once posted a recipe for edible playdough. It used something like a pound and a half of icing sugar and a tonne of peanut butter!!

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 17:59

God I am so happy this thread is spreading the playdough love

OP posts:
TheMaskedPoster · 17/05/2007 08:58

love still being spread!!

am going to make some today as dd is insisting on a play dough day

now the only quandary is what colour/flavour combo to do .........

TheMaskedPosterMadeaSnowman · 18/05/2007 16:03

we made lovely pink banana smelling snowmen

such fun!

CantSleepWontSleep · 30/05/2007 21:35

Thought I'd give this a bump, as I made some today .

How much vanilla or whatever have the rest of you used? I thought I'd put a fair bit in, but it doesn't smell of it at all.

deaconblue · 30/05/2007 22:06

Me too! First ever attempt at home made play doh. Niece and nephew had a great time making it, we then played a play doh bakery where they made buns and biscuits out of play doh and even 1 year old ds had fun squishing it. Fab fab fab

tombley · 30/05/2007 22:10

I tried the black glittery orange smelling one the other day and ds was distinctly underwhelmed by the results. I used a whole bottle of black food colouring but the best we got was a light grey colour. The glitter is great but it didn't smell of orange either despite a good slug of essence. Hasn't deterred us though are going to do bright pink with purple glitter next week.

blodwen · 30/05/2007 22:20

Just a cautionary note about keeping the playdough too long, especially in a group environment(playgroup, nursery, childminding)... I was told that threadworms are easily spread in playdough (eggs under fingernails get into the dough and end up under someone elses fingernails and then into their mouth)... don't know if it's true, but I change mine regularly (am a cm).

SobranieCocktail · 08/04/2009 08:33

bump for this fabulous thread.

I'm planning on making blue with gold glitter and a bit of sandalwood oil today.

seeker · 08/04/2009 08:45

Food colouring pastes from cakes decorating shops are better than the bottles of liquid for strong colours.

For her 3rd birthday someone gave dd a box with a big blob of homemade playdo, the ingredients (including some lavender oil and purple colouring) for another batch and the recipe. It was a great present - she still remembers it 10 years on!
