Ooh aviatrix, here it is

oh dear I am very sorry to hear about the holiday. Glad you are back safely with us.

Can I just remind people about almond oil and children with allergies? I am paranoid about this so apologies.

I made the cocoa powder one and it was utterly fantastic. I put in 3 tbsp of cocoa and it went a decent shade of brown and smelt divine. Ruddy should have done, it was Green and Black's

Oh and IME I would say about 2 years old is a good time to start playdoughing without too much getting eaten. Make a big lump and let them squish it all about. It is nice and relaxing for mummies too

Thanks F&Z, timely reminder about allergies - fortunately my DS is nutproof (for now).

Astrophe · 07/05/2007 07:49

Well, I made chocolate and white with gold glitter and lemon essense Yesterday...and they mixed it !!!! Of course they did - -silly me! They were both gorgeous though. TBH I think the kids would have been just as happy with fluro green (actually they did comment on the glitter), but I had fun!

BettySpaghetti · 07/05/2007 11:29

Giving this thread a well deserved bump because I've just made some playdough with my two (aged 7 and 2) and as a result I've had over an hours peace and quiet!

They've got the plastic play kitchen plates and bowls and are making "party food". Meanwhile I've cleaned the kitchen, sorted some washing and now I'm on here....'s all round!

BettySpaghetti · 07/05/2007 11:31

oh, meant to add that I couldn't bring myself to use cocoa, much as I wanted to, as its Green and Blacks! Its a straightforward green but its what they chose and they are more than happy

MuminBrum · 07/05/2007 13:52

I have had a happy morning playdoughing with my DS and our neighbours' daughter - we made pink and green - they loved it and played so nicely together, fair brought a tear to my eye.

LazyLine · 07/05/2007 13:55

Can you make it without the cream of tartar? And do you need something to replace it?

Would like to make some today but don't have any

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 14:13

BettySpaghetti I sacrificed my Green and Blacks to make playdough. I sure this means I am a better mother than you

(or a complete idiot)

LL someone earlier said you don't need it - we are theorising that it is used as a preservative - so I guess you could make some and just keep it in the fridge for a few days?

at Franny

LazyLine · 07/05/2007 16:07

I did read that the tartar stops the dough from cracking. We shall see...

DimpledThighs · 07/05/2007 16:23

thanks for the idea.... (off to ransack kitchen cupboards)

hoxtonchick · 07/05/2007 16:30

just made some without tartar, will report back. it's green, with green glitter & vanilla essence. yum.

DimpledThighs · 07/05/2007 18:10

not enough salt in my house - did start to measure out some dishwasher salt but hen realised that I had no idea what 'dishwasher salt' actually is and was worried that our hands would all dissolve form playing with it.

hoxtonchick · 07/05/2007 18:48

i only put 1 cup of salt in & it was fine.

Tatties · 07/05/2007 20:17

I made some yellow coloured, orange flavoured playdough this afternoon, I told ds is was to PLAY with and he kept saying EAT!

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 21:23

Oh marvellous

I am getting the warm glow of the successful playdough evangelist

I was daydreaming about different playdough options and I thought if you did black glittery playdough and put patchouli in it, it could be GOTH PLAYDOUGH

I know I need to get out more

OP posts:
Tatties · 07/05/2007 21:55

Ooh, that reminds me of a black, patchouli soap I once had... from a mail order company... a bit like Lush... can't for the life of me remember what it was called

I was thinking about doing a calming lavender scented one

Katymac · 07/05/2007 21:57

I now have yellow vanilla & purple lavender

I feel all calm and vaguely hungry

Is there anyway to make in the microwave I hate cleaning the pans out

BettySpaghetti · 07/05/2007 22:05

PMSL at Goth Playdough!

How do you make it black by the way? You can't get black food colouring can you?

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 22:09

Oh yes oh yes you can get black food colouring

was it Cosmetics to go, Tatties? They were who Lush were before they were Lush

Katymac I don't know, probably if you kept stirring. But you would still have to wash the bowl out

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 22:10

I am going to do a luxury glittery chamomile one, and sell it at a church fete along with all your other fab ideas I am stealing shamelessly

ravenAK · 07/05/2007 22:12

Oooooh. Goth Playdough!

Dh has just read over shoulder & done the 'how sad are you?' eye roll thing. Which considering he's the singer in a chuffing goth band is a bloomin' nerve frankly.

I thought you had to be careful with homemade play dough because of whopping salt content & kids inevitably eating it...?

Katymac · 07/05/2007 22:12

Yeah - but it's like the difference between scrambled eggs

Pan = scummy burnt bit on bottem
Bowl = no scummy......

You see?
