you'll be telling me you've never made saltdough next

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 19:21

"is this really the first time you've made your own playdough"

no

I don't like salt dough too much, it smells funny

hub2dee · 03/05/2007 19:25

Yes, but would it qualify as 'natural' for a wnaky basket, Faz ?

SoupDragon · 03/05/2007 19:29

Add a tablespoon of cocoa. My god it smells absolutely gorgeous and looks like a huge ball of chocolate. But tastes cr*p, obviously.

SoupDragon · 03/05/2007 19:29

I've tried a no-cook recipe that uses a tablespoon of handcream too. That's quite nice too.

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 19:34

Not recommended for wnaky basket, hub - not meant to go in the mouth

Soupy I LOVE the cocoa idea, I have never heard that before

I have a hand cream recipe but have never used it. I always wonder if it makes a difference as to what hand cream you use? I have tried various no-cook recipes but never very impressed with any of them, would you really rate this one?

cream of tartar not really necessary IMHO

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 19:42

I am always non-plussed about what cream of tartar is

it sounds kind of mediaeval

I think the CoT is a preservative although I can't remember where on earth I've read that. It may be complete b*llocks.

The hand cream one is rather sticky - needs more flour than the recipe calls for but it smells lovely, makes your hands soft and uses up stolen hotel toiletries. DS2 made some a fortnight ago, I'll dig it out and see what it's like...

SoupDragon · 03/05/2007 20:17

Hmmm... much stickier than when he was playing with it and it looks all moist!

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 20:17

Sticky will not work for me Soup

you know you said the cocoa makes it brown - do you just use cocoa and no other colouring for that one then? What shade of brown does it go, with a tbsp of cocoa?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 03/05/2007 20:18

Kind of cocoa coloured! No, you don't add any other colouring.

CoT is potassium bitartrate.

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 21:39

but what does it do?

MuminBrum · 03/05/2007 21:42

In the context of playdough, I think it must be a preservative. In the context of baking powder, which is the main place you find it in the kitchen, it is the acid component - sodium bicarbonate is the alkaline component.

Mercy · 03/05/2007 21:46

Saltdough can be baked/dried and painted after your kids have made specific shapes, decorations etc

Playdough is more for immediate use ime.

Posey · 03/05/2007 21:47

I make all the playdough for our pre-school and love doing different colours, adding glitter etc. We keep ours for about half a term (6-8 weeks) in the fridge. Doesn't go all hard and unmalleable like shop bought stuff.

Tatties · 03/05/2007 21:48

at BLACK, GLITTERY playdough smelling of ORANGES

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 21:50

MiB is there some significance to having an acid and an alkaline component to baking powder?

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 21:50

Well, call me a sycophant if you like, but I am definitely inspired to make black glittery orange-smelling play dough over the bank hol weekend.

Everyone I know who has made it absolutely raves about how good it is. Two motherly, domestic-goddessy type activities rolled into one. "I am a good mum" vibes will be plentiful in this house.

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 22:20

YOU WON'T REGRET IT

it is my top therapeutic activity for the week

I am going to bump this thread at random until everyone has experienced the joy of black glittery playdough that smells of oranges
