Making one's own playdough is great, it's so liberating...
My sister and I made some with our kids a couple of weeks ago and I keep getting it out and showing it to people saying 'we made that!!'.

Also the children play so much more with it as they were involvolved in making it (making it much easier to spend time on MN win win or what??).

Love the cocoa and smelly oils ideas - we are due for a new batch I think as our current lot in the fridge is full of grass, biscuit crumbs etc.

A tip, if you add boiling water instead of cold, it cooks up super quickly - about 2 mins.

ChasingSquirrels · 03/05/2007 22:24

I have NEVER thought of putting glitter or smellies in it - what a FANTASTIC idea - thanks.

Astrophe · 03/05/2007 22:26

I think C0fT makes it rise a little, so makes it softer. Reason I think this is that I once made it without and it was a bit leathery and stodgy.

So do you need the cream of tartar? Is the general concensus that you use faz's recipe in same amounts just leave that out?

1dilemma · 03/05/2007 22:29

sorry x posted! will search out some c of t.

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2007 22:30

thanks was there today.
Still I have at least 3 new Tescos within walking distance.....
I must say I am in awe of your playdo and general level of fun stimulating activities you seem to get up to.

1dilemma · 03/05/2007 23:14

And also your spelling.
Playdough I mean

FrannyandZooey · 04/05/2007 08:23

oh do not be in awe fgs

Like most people, I only post on MN when I have done anything remotely interesting, so for every excitable homemade playdough post please mentally insert about 1500 "mooched about a bit and picked my feet" posts

Have decided to make Soupy's chocolate playdough instead of black, glittery &c

we are doing 5 currant buns at my group (have acquired knitted buns and laminated pennies) and they can make chocolate playdough buns with pink playdough cherries on top, after we sing the song

You may need 2 tablespoons of cocoa as I think the recipe you posted makes twice as much as the one I used originally for the chocolate stuff. Add one and see what it looks like I guess!

SoupDragon · 04/05/2007 11:15

I love making playdough. It's so satisfying. I may have to start making bread again.

Does the glitter in playdough work? A friend said that it wasn't terribly successful when she made it, I thin the glitter stuck to your hands or something. I did make a lovely lilac sparkley dough by using some of that body glitter stuff. I had it left lying about from my Pre Child Party Days, sigh.

MuminBrum · 04/05/2007 20:30

Baking powder. The chemical reaction between the sodium bicarbonate and the tartaric acid produces carbon dioxide - the bubbles which make your victoria sponge rise!

WriggleJiggle · 04/05/2007 22:53

black glittery playdough that smells of oranges

and >>>

1dilemma · 04/05/2007 22:58

Aviatrix! I have been wondering that too... I am desperate to make some but fear that ds will not be interested or will try to eat it...

Did you have a good holiday?

Blimey aviatrix

Sounds like a pretty grim time

Ds hasn't been well this weekend so I am feeling a bit wiped out...
Our week was good, very tiring though. Business trip and seeing relatives so not really relaxing, but still it was nice to get away.

Hope you are all recovered now.

MuminBrum · 06/05/2007 20:36

I'm going to do this tomorrow; I'm thinking pink with rose oil in it, and I'm going to use some almond oil that's been hanging about for ages (is anyone really ever going to massage anyone else in a house with a small child in it?) so our hands will get a beauty treatment while we play.

MuminBrum · 06/05/2007 20:37

Blimey, just looked at thread again, and I can assure you I do not plan to projectile vomit all over my mother tomorrow!

funnypeculiar · 06/05/2007 20:41

ummmm, now I have a dilema ... black, glittery & orange-sented ... or chocolate ...

Tatties · 06/05/2007 20:46

Oooh MuminBrum, almond oil is a good idea, I also have some hanging around which is in no danger of being used for massage...

Funnypeculiar, I would definitely go for orange, black & sparkly
