just wanted to say thank you to f&z for posting about this - made green and purple playdough yesterday - in the microwave - took under a minute to cook. i only made a tenth of this recipe, though - 700g of flour for playdough for one small child just seemed a bit much!

sadly, ds really just wanted to bang the playdough (and the table) with the rolling pin - but i had fun!

SparklyGothKat · 08/05/2007 18:02

poo I made it and its all gooey! What did I do wrong...??

misdee · 08/05/2007 18:39

maybe you did need the CoTT

SparklyGothKat · 08/05/2007 19:24

oh well, will buy more flour and salt, and cream of tartar tomorrow and try again

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 20:33

Sparkly I don't think you cooked it long enough

you have to keep heating it and keep stirring until it gets really, really thick and claggy and starts to pull away from the edge of the pan

or of course it could just be the COT

I used water from the kettle as Astrophe suggested and it cooked really quickly

SparklyGothKat · 08/05/2007 20:43

it was thick, but when I let it cool it went gooey

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 20:43

I am going to try that next time, I think it sounds extremely cunning

I am planning to put spices and so on in the next lot and use it to accompany story of "The Gingerbread Man" at my group

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 20:43

Oh SGK, I think it must have been the COT

what a shame

just had a thought, I used self raising flour as that is all I had, is it supposed to be plain??

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 20:47

Yes but can't see why that would affect it?

We need science type bod to explain it all

there was me thinking I would be a good mummy and make playdough for the kids and it went wrong!! [sob]

Tatties · 08/05/2007 20:59

Well I am bloody amazed mine turned out well (normally crap at anything domestic-goddessy), and though I did use the exact ingredients, I was quite rough with the amounts

cornflakegirl · 09/05/2007 13:24

sgk - would have thought the self-raising flour would have made up for the lack of cream of tartar - unless the added bicarb did something weird?

SparklyGothKat · 09/05/2007 13:31

LOL, I must just be rubbish at making playdough

FLIER · 10/05/2007 07:58

thanks for this thread. made it yesterday afternoon and we had a great time with it.
gonna try next batch with glitter

Fillyjonk · 10/05/2007 08:29

you can buy playdough you know

Fillyjonk · 10/05/2007 08:30

COT is acidic and that is probably significant in some way. baking powder works by causing a reaction between that and bicarb.

i know all this cos i use it for wool dying

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 08:41

Filly you heretic

If they put this in their mouths they tend to spit it out rather than swallow it as it tastes so foul (resists a [snurk]). They will then put some more in of course...

I can't believe you used G&B cocoa! Wnakey Playdough

Top Tip - if you're making 2 colours, make 2 colours that'll mix up nicely. I made red and yellow for playgroup which meant I ended up with a nice orange once they'd mixed the 2 together. I then gave it to the nursery attached to the school because there's no way I could use 2 full batches of playdough!

Did the gltter stay in the glittery dough??

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 09:25

yes I used organic flour too

(all I had in the cupboard)

Extra virgin olive oil, Franny??

You can, Pamina, but the colour goes in more uniformly if you add it to the water. If you add is when the dough is made it needs a lot of kneading to get the colour through the dough and goes all over your hands.

You can, of course, simply halve the ingredients and make 2 batches...
