21 facts about MNs - Are they accurate?

zombieslayer · 01/04/2012 13:37

Hi I am a lurker. I am just posting to check out the accuracy of my knowledge of mumsnet. Can someone let me know if these are accurate and if I have missed anything out (note it is after 12pm, so too late for April Fool's jokes!)

  1. Naice ham is a reference to a shopping list a poster found in a supermarket.
  1. Pombears refers to a dinner party where the OP and her DH were offered a variety of nursery type food. At a later dinner the OP's DH offered everyone pom bears.
  1. The poo Troll posts about a variety of improbable poo situations often involving manual evacuation, including the infamous thread about a woman pooing her clothes in St Pancras Rail Station. A Mn's sister was dispatched with clean clothes to said toilet to find them empty.
  1. Zombie is a very nice zombie who lives in a Trade Marked Dustbin and has promised to warn all Mn's of any imminent zombie invasion.
  1. Honeydragon has only flambeed 1 dog on a thread about the most intelligent MNs. (Although I have never understood how the reference to only 1 dog is a defence!)
  1. Netmums is either a perfectly reasonable alternative site with greater support than here. Or the tool of the devil full of tickers, anti SN comments, racism, sexism and homophobia - and no swearing! Although some posters belong to both, including MrsDeVere who was forced by netmums to reduce the size of her sparkly tickers after a complaint by another poster.
  1. All self respecting MN's do a maintenance wash and put veet down the plug hole.
  1. Benefit threads never end well.
  1. An OFRS is a rucksack to keep by the door in case of a zombie invasion or any other disaster. There are many threads discussing this with the more practicaly minded including dry foods, battery torches, weapons and those strictly in mum mode including baby wipes and favourite DCs toys.

10.The moldies were a group in 2008 who fell out with people here and left to start their own site, only to never be heard from again.

  1. Swearing is perfectly acceptable here and any thread asking for less swearing, especially from a newbie, will not end well.

  2. Somone will always post - what business is it of yours to any thread commenting on somebody else's family - even in AIBU.

  3. Using the term Huns is not acceptable.

  4. There is no such thing as populars, unpopulars or royalty, just those who are long time lurkers, prolific posters, or post occasionally.

  5. Anyone can post here - men, childless women, even dogs as long as they can type and have their own MN account.

  6. A sock puppet is a second user name that some posters use to post support for their point of view when no-one is agreeing with them - particularly useful in AIBU.

  7. Anyone typing "think of the children" is always being ironic.

  8. Friday night is bumsex night i.e. there should under MN Terms & Conditions always be a thread that involves anal sex.

  9. Centreparcs that you may previously have thought of as an overpriced middle class holiday destination, is in fact a hotbed of bumsex.

  10. Fathers 4 Justice regularly post here berating mums for being men hating. The "correct" response is to talk about the weather, where you are taking your kids that day or to offer round biscuits.

  11. Whether lurking or posting, MN is addictive.

feels slightly funny hugging a zombie!

Oho · 01/04/2012 16:06

I like this thread. Made me smile. Why the narking?

Stratters · 01/04/2012 16:06

It's 'Zombie'. To differentiate from other zombies. Zombie is my pet zombie, and I luffs her.

JustHecate · 01/04/2012 16:09

oh yes. This really should go in some sort of MN FAQ Grin

GoGoBananas · 01/04/2012 16:10

Moldies isn't lighthearted Shock

For those of us around at the time, it ruined Christmas. It ruined the dc's Christmas. Children went feral, turkey burnt, presents went unopened, the internet crashed fgs. Grin

I suppose it's just odd. A lurker posting only to confirm she's compiled lots of info about non-lurkers, only to then presumably disappear again. It's um, disconcerting I suppose. But not in a noteworthy, critical way. In an 'oh' sort of way.

It's a good snapshot of now though. It'd be interesting to compare a lifer's list of tropes because it'd look v different (W&R/narniagate/bounty invasion/mangoes to name but a few) and it's missing part 57, subsection d) trolls we have known and loved.

GoGoBananas · 01/04/2012 16:10

I'm not 'narking'. I was curious.

zombieslayer · 01/04/2012 16:12

Mangos is the juggling thread is it?

And who knows. now I have registered I may actually start posting.

OP posts:
zombieslayer · 01/04/2012 16:13

Stratters - sorry Zombie. And...ahem...is Zombie your sock puppet??

  1. Quiches are support threads.
OP posts:
JustHecate · 01/04/2012 16:14

Oh god. Mangoes. I was on that thread. OP was feda, or similar, I think? I wonder what happened to her.

youarenotbeingserious · 01/04/2012 16:14

Love the list Grin

Could feel myself nodding along to most of it thinking 'yes, I remember/knew/know that' and then Shock 'did not know that'

It would be a brilliant introduction for new MNers who then wouldn't have to lurk as much as zombie to gather evidence!

May I point out from your updated list that kurri's dog can count better than you? What comes after 24? --------> runs Wink

Stratters · 01/04/2012 16:14

I missed Moldies. I wish with all my little heart that I'd been here for that debacle.

I'd also love a 'Trolls we have known and loved' subsection.

GoGoBananas · 01/04/2012 16:17

There are probably hundreds of things you could have in your list. I suppose the best way of having a working knowledge of them all is getting stuck in and chatting. And enjoying the slow, inexorable slide into slatterndom.

And I suppose you should also add to your list that what you're compiling is better known as a spreadsheet and you don't advertise it but add to it surreptitiously over time and then whip it out at the opportune moment in order to prove/accuse/impress.

Essene · 01/04/2012 16:20

Your point re Moldies is slightly inaccurate. They did not first fall out with other Mners and thus went off to start their own site. They started their site in secret, while still posting away on MN, and the existence of the site was leaked by Justine leading to the falling out between Those-Who-Were-In and The Rest Of Us.

IamtheZombie · 01/04/2012 16:24

Zombie is no one's sock puppet. She is her own Zombie. Smile

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 01/04/2012 16:39

What's all this abut juggling mangoes ?

My favourite fruit BTW so I might give that a go some time Smile

Learnt some new things Zombie to hone my specialist MN knowledge ...

eg. origins of pombears, and something about flambeeing dogs ?? Also the existence of a poo troll.

All vair interesting Grin

bibbityisaporker · 01/04/2012 16:43

10.The moldies were a group in 2008 who fell out with people here and left to start their own site, only to never be heard from again.

That one's wrong I'm afraid. Moldies often come back to Mumsnet (especially if they are being talked about) and many never went away. They post in both places Grin.

SuePurblybilt · 01/04/2012 16:44

I think it's a little inaccurate to say that the moldies were never heard from again too. And wasn't Mrs DV eventually banned from NM

bibbityisaporker · 01/04/2012 16:45

I am beginning to doubt the existence of the poo troll tbh. Plenty of long term kosher-seeming Mumsnetters appear to be happy to talk poo all the livelong day!

bibbityisaporker · 01/04/2012 16:45

Bumsex is so 2009 now.

I remember moldies although I was more lurky then than I am now. It was in the newspapers and everything.

zombieslayer · 01/04/2012 16:51

The numbering was because I was incorporating another posters sugestions in the spirit of inclusiveness. Thanks for clearing up moldies reference.

Have purposefully left off reference to threads that don't get mentioned generally. Naice ham and pombears are frequently mentioned, hence their inclusion. I will post an update list.

zombieslayer · 01/04/2012 16:52

Gin - I didn't know it was in the newspapers!

HelenMumsnet · 01/04/2012 16:59

Did someone say poo troll?

Oho · 01/04/2012 17:02

Ah, Bananas, I'm sorry. I was rude. I'm being a bit of an arsehole in real life too today, if that's any consolation.
