My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

Thank you for all your responses!! I’m hoping it was a mistake when typing it out on the app but they’ve written veggie sausages on there before when’s he’s had them that’s why I’m a bit worried this time!
I will talk to them in the morning tomorrow and see what they say, I hope they’ll be completely honest with me!

My daughters nursery did something along the same lines. She had a dairy allergy and they put that she’d had a glass of milk at snack time. When I asked, they said they use the copy and paste function between all the children’s records to save time and just forgot to put she’d had something different. I’m certain they were telling the truth as if they had given her milk she’d have been covered in hives

ThorsLeftNut · 09/11/2021 21:41

I would guess they’ve just wrote sausages because that’s what she’s had, and they hadn’t thought to write the veggie part on.
Hope you get clarification tomorrow!

cowburp · 09/11/2021 21:42

Yes I think that's the main thing I'd want, honesty and then putting measures in place to either make sure they confirm it was veggie sausage each time or never give pork again if it has happened.

Your child isn’t allergic to pork and is too young to have a faith of their own. There is nothing to worry about and
no harm was done, just explain you would like them to double check in future.

Are you really that stupid or does it take practice?

Sounds like pork to me, I'm quite sure they would not be buying expensive beef ones.
My son has been a vegetarian all of his life 38 years and was constantly being given meat at school, when I complained was told it won't kill him this once.
What I would suggest is putting in a written complaint with further instructions about his diet, it doesn't have to be overly long and keep a copy.
That way if it happens again you have a paper trail which cannot be ignored.
They cannot ignore a written complaint

MidgeKiller1 · 09/11/2021 21:52

If this were me OP I would be livid, I would check and then put in a formal complaint. If they can’t get the basics right they shouldn’t be looking after children.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 09/11/2021 21:53

have you lot been on the gin this evening, calm down for goodness sake.

Schools here tend to avoid pork entirely. It's just easier.

I'm betting the sausages were beef..... Especially if you're in a quite diverse area.

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 09/11/2021 21:55

@Iamhaunted

More than likely they just entered the wrong thing on the app, its probably a pretty monotonous task to do whilst surrounded by screaming children

And even if they did accidentally serve pork, it wasn’t malicious and all my Muslim friends (I grew up in a very Asian area and was a minority) say that it’s not haram if you didn’t know you was being served it

I agree it's probably entered wrongly. However it's more serious than a religious requirement. As you say, it's not haram- no intent as a child anyway. But cultural and dietary requirements are so important to get right- imagine if it was a child who was severely allergic to dairy being given yoghurt and having a reaction. It's not so much about the actual food in this scenario (assuming that it's not a data entry error), it's about ensuring that dietary needs are met.
roarfeckingroarr · 09/11/2021 21:55

Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things?

Catlover77 · 09/11/2021 21:58

Why was my post deleted? The rspca have given their stance on halal, can we not discuss this on a forum?

Flowerpowerr1 · 09/11/2021 21:58

Update; I have wrote a message back on the app to ask if it was pork sausages or not and they’ve corrected it and put (veggie sausages) in brackets.
This has really out my mind at ease! Hope it was just a mistake or they could be lying I’ll never know😩 even I accidentally ate sausages in primary school myself!

I wouldn’t say me and my family are strict practicing Muslims but the one thing we just don’t do is eat pork! We do occasionally eat non halal meat but pork is just a big no no! It’s just how I was raised and how ill raise my children. No offense to anyone who does love pork! :)

Just ask. A lot of nurseries make and serve turkey sausages now to meet various healthy eating objectives.
AnonAnom940 · 09/11/2021 21:59

@NoDecentHandlesLeft It's really not the same as an allergy. Religious dietary requirements should be respected definitely but it really isn't comparable to a potentially life threatening allergy.

PriamFarrl · 09/11/2021 22:00

90% of meat that is halal is stunned before slaughter.

Nursery gave my dairy intolerant daughter a dairy pudding once. It was a complete accident and it only happened once in 5 years. They apologised profusely. I said it was fine, after all, they were the ones who had to deal with the nappies the next day!
