My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

Why? Checking to see if they should have known themselves, well my child is autistic and he limited speech/understanding does that answer your question?“

No need to be rude. I was wondering at what age schools stop supervising now 🤷‍♀️

FranceTeam · 09/11/2021 21:02

@mynameiscalypso, yes but it is a child. They shouldn’t be subject to strict religious rules, especially if a mistake was made by someone else.

KurtWilde · 09/11/2021 21:03

@Almostmenopausal

Ah ignore previous post, I see you're veggie. It won't do him any harm OP, just have a word and explain you're vegetarian and ask them not to do it again.
OP is Muslim, not vegetarian. Her DS doesn't eat pork for religious reasons.
Crunchymum · 09/11/2021 21:04

@Almostmenopausal

What's wrong with pork?
Muslims do not eat pork for religious reasons.

If one is Muslim, Pork is a forbidden food. Not sure of the reasons, but Muslims eat no pig meat at all. A friend is Muslim and just the smell of frying bacon made him blench.

Maybe as Jesus made evil spirits go into a herd of pigs?

Or maybe as pigs years ago had numerous parasites which made it undesirable to consume pork?

As a mother of a child with very strict dietary requirements, I'd be fucked off.

Would they make the "mistake" with a diabetic child or with a child who has severe allergies?

FWIW, I provide all food for my DC (including snacks, alternatives for birthdays and cooking related activities and I adhere to the school policy re: being nut free etc) to minimise DC eating anything they shouldn't but my DC has complex requirements. Pork free / nut free etc should be simple enough.

mynameiscalypso · 09/11/2021 21:11

Pork free is really not difficult or unusual. DS nursery is totally pork free because they have Muslim staff and children and it's just easier not to serve it at all (the food is mainly veggie in any event).

Blacksheepcat · 09/11/2021 21:11

I work in a school and all meat served is Halal and sausages are non-pork. All jelly has no gelatine etc…

Bettybantz · 09/11/2021 21:12

I don’t think chicken sausages would be any good either unless they are specifically halal.
I still feel terrible about the time DS’s friend told me he liked chicken nuggets and had them at home, so I bought him some at soft play.
When I got him home his mum said she bought halal ones.

I hope it’s a mistake on the app OP. Does it just say sausages or pork sausages? I can understand you feeling like you can’t trust them if they did give him pork.

TokenGinger · 09/11/2021 21:13

I really hope it's a case them just not labelling it correctly. My friend's son is vegetarian and nursery label his "sausages / meatballs" even though they're veggie substitutes.

I'd be absolutely furious in your shoes if they did feed him pork. And I'm non-religious. I just have respect for other cultures and dietary requirements.

TurnUpTurnip · 09/11/2021 21:13

children are meant to have lanyards with their dietary requirements on, school kept claiming to “misplace them” sorry but not all children are NT some have sen, my son is selective mute and my daughter has asd, both were given by “mistake” I was more concerned about the school making repeated “mistakes” would they do it if it was an allergy? Especially when a child CANT speak for themselves

I'm Jewish and I remember when my niece loudly told my brother, in the kosher butcher's shop, that she loved 'am' [sic] that they had at nursery! Shock Blush

Turned out it was a veggie fake ham, so hopefully same with the sausages.

Porfre · 09/11/2021 21:15

YANBU.
As above hopefully it is a mistake and they entered the information wrong or maybe they were halal chicken sausages.

It depends on their response. If they have made a mistake and take it seriously and put steps into place to make sure it doesnt happen I may continue at the nursery.

But you wouldn't be unreasonable to change your nursery if you dont like their response.

I don’t want my children eating because they make me retch and I have a bit of a phobia about them

Good Lord! Way to manipulate your DC, much?

Lunaduckdrop · 09/11/2021 21:17

Chances are it is just a recording issue. If not, it matters more to you than it does to a young child. I'd try and put it behind me. If it happens repeatedly however I'd probably look for another nursery.

@AliceMcK
It's beans isn't it

My nursery is always trying to give the veggie kids fish and my vegan DD cheese

pastypirate · 09/11/2021 21:21

Just hanging around to find out what the phobia food is the pp mentioned. I'm wondering if it's ketchup because I can't stand the smell of it. Curious!

hotmess19 · 09/11/2021 21:22

If no pork is so important to you then Islamic nursery or a halal/kosher only nursery is the way forward.

I was partially raised by a Muslim family, my child is being raised by a Muslim family. That’s the way they went about it after too many cock-ups with us kids being served pork.
