My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

We got ds a small button badge that said
I am a vegi!
on it
Was 99p!!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/11/2021 19:57

I fed a Muslim child pepperoni pizza once. Total brain fart moment.

Was about 12 years ago and I still feel shitty about it.

Maybe it was a new member of staff? Maybe it was veggie sausages? Maybe someone cocked up.

Can you ask them tomorrow?

EileenGC · 09/11/2021 19:57

No experience here but definitely check with them tomorrow morning about this. It could’ve been a new member of staff who didn’t know, but it’s still unacceptable in my opinion.

Imagine he couldn’t have certain foods due to a severe allergy and they made a ‘mistake’ and served him the wrong meal.

I’m not Muslim but also have a restricted diet for religious reasons, so I understand how you feel.

PurplePinecone · 09/11/2021 20:08

Could be that they entered the information incorrectly on the app. They should know his dietary requirements and would know to give him vegetarian ones in person hopefully!

Aimee1987 · 09/11/2021 20:12

My son has a dairy allergy and I got his food sheet home saying they gave him a babybel. I asked the following morning and I was a assured it was nothing more than a typo and he had the dairy free cheese.
He didnt have a reaction so I was confident it was nothing more than being written down wrong.

Ask it may be they just forgot to write the vegie part when recording.

Plotato · 09/11/2021 20:16

Agree with the above that it's likely an error in recording rather than what they were actually served. My child has the veggie option at nursery but on occasion it's been recorded she had chicken. I think the member of staff just wrote the same in 6 sheets or whatever without thinking. One nursery staff member was mortified and so apologetic the following Monday and I felt awful that she'd probably been worrying about it (know as a teacher what it's like to worry about something relating to a child all weekend!) - I really wasn't fussed!

AliceMcK · 09/11/2021 20:20

Wait and see it may have been the veggie version. If not like you I’d be fuming.

Not the same but there are certain foods I don’t want my children eating because they make me retch and I have a bit of a phobia about them. I turned up one day at nursery to find my dd eating one of them, I was fuming as now she loves the stuff.

Comedycook · 09/11/2021 20:20

If they have given him pork (obviously you need to check) I'd complain and move nurseries. It's so important that they take dietary requirements seriously and if they can't get that right I'd struggle to trust them. However, like I said, you need to be sure...sausages could well be chicken or beef.

riotlady · 09/11/2021 20:20

As others have said, might be a mistake on the app where someone’s just gone and entered the same thing for all the kids on autopilot.

Misspacorabanne · 09/11/2021 20:21

I bet it was a typo op!
I've worked in afew nurseries and there would be afew members of staff with the children at lunch time, all that know his needs, it's highly unlikely that he would have been given pork and nobody noticed. In all the nurseries I've worked at the chef has a list of dietary requirements and will know what days he attends. The staff are all aware, and new staff are not usually given the role of handing out meals until they get to know the children and their needs more. If you say it's a really good nursery, I bet it's just that they were filling in the feedback forms/apps and forgot for a second who's they were filling in. Smile

riotlady · 09/11/2021 20:22

@AliceMcK why does it matter if your kids eat food you don’t like when they’re at nursery, you won’t see it?

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/11/2021 20:24

It might be a mistake on the app. We're veggie and sometimes they do put the meat version on at first, then correct it later. I know he does have the veggie meal because I've seen photos of them eating and it's served on a green plate with his name on!

They tend to do block filling of Tapestry, and I guess if they get distracted they forget to go back and update for the individuals.

I have to ask! What food!!

@riotlady probably as dd wants to eat at home where she doesn't like it?

Greenleaves20 · 09/11/2021 20:27

We’re vegetarians and I went to collect DS from nursery when he first started to find him eating beef noodles. I was very upset and ended up going in for a meeting with the manager to discuss esp as DS also has a strawberry allergy so I was worried they had no idea what his dietary requirements were. They took it very seriously and the staff concerned were mortified. They ended up reviewing their mealtime policies and changing the way they distribute food to ensure allergies and dietary requirements aren’t missed.

I would definitely say it’s a good idea to check with them first before you start taking it further though.

TurnUpTurnip · 09/11/2021 20:29

Yep my kids school have done this numerous times, fed my vegetarian kids meat 🙄

TurnUpTurnip · 09/11/2021 20:29

Always been told it “wouldn’t happen again”

AliceMcK · 09/11/2021 20:30

Because when I’d pick them up it would be on her clothes or round her mouth and I could smell it, and now she asks for it all the time. She’s not at nursery now so wants to eat it at home.

It’s also the fact that I never told them why they weren’t allowed the food but that they were told under no circumstances to give my children it.

It’s not like it’s just something I don’t like, I will happily make foods I don’t eat, I literally feel sick at the sight and smell of the stuff, all relating to a very traumatic experience I had as a child. I did try allowing my oldest to eat it when she was little because I didn’t want to push my phobia on her, but couldn’t cope especially when one day my DH had given her some when I was out and I picked her up when I got home and she threw it up on me. After that it was a blanket ban on the stuff.

Iamhaunted · 09/11/2021 20:30

More than likely they just entered the wrong thing on the app, its probably a pretty monotonous task to do whilst surrounded by screaming children

And even if they did accidentally serve pork, it wasn’t malicious and all my Muslim friends (I grew up in a very Asian area and was a minority) say that it’s not haram if you didn’t know you was being served it

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/11/2021 20:32

Are you sure? Wondering how you were informed: is it a tick box app?

Spiceup · 09/11/2021 20:33

I was working in a school that accidentally fed a Muslim child pork once. Everyone was completely mortified, the headteacher apologised personally to the family and there was a review of the process to (hopefully) avoid it happening again. Unfortunately though, everyone is human and all sorts of mistakes do happen.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/11/2021 20:33

How old are they? (noticed you say school, not nursery).

Garfunkle · 09/11/2021 20:33

I fed a guest Christmas dinner a few years ago. On the day they told me they were Muslim (and vegetarian). I was mortified because I wasn’t informed beforehand. I asked if they would be happy with just the veg, and Yorkshire pudding as I had made my gravy from the pork fat (the roasties were cooked in pork fat too). The guest said she was ok with the roasties and pork gravy.

???? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Please DD never invite invite your friends for Christmas dinner. Ever again! (Unless you cook it yourself).

TerribleCustomerCervix · 09/11/2021 20:34

I’d give them a chance to explain what happened first.

Then maybe decide on my next steps based on the nursery’s reaction. Do they hold their hands up and admit the mistake? Are they proactive in coming up with workable solutions to ensure this doesn’t happen again?

I’d be loathe to move my dc from an otherwise good setting based on a genuine mistake, but you need to be able to trust the people looking after him.

Hall84 · 09/11/2021 20:36

I'd guess a typo on the app. DD is dairy free due to an intolerance and sometimes they say dairy free cheese, sometimes just cheese. When she first moved rooms I checked but she never had a reaction.

That said, this is most likely to be an error on the app.
