My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

I can totally see how you are quite rightly upset. Hopefully they have recorded the wrong thing. Xxx

Their smoked cheese is nice and do is their butter block
I'm hoping to go to a vegan fair next week so if there are any samples I will give them a try. I am open to try anything new, but as a cheese lover I am always disappointed at the vegan "cheese" offerings that I have tried. They lack the umami taste that you get with cheese, and the Violife ones have an underlying slightly sickly vanilla taste to me.

I tried some nice cashew "cheese" at a vegan fair a few years ago, but have never seen it since. They also did a vegan "butter" that was pretty tasty.

FancySomeChips · 10/11/2021 19:41

In my setting meat sausages are dead chicken not pork/dead pig.

Allycott · 10/11/2021 19:44

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Wait and see what they say. All the sausages at DS's nursery were Halal chicken sausages.
Well isn't that just great for those who do not condone halal practices ....
Allycott · 10/11/2021 19:46

@mynameiscalypso

Pork free is really not difficult or unusual. DS nursery is totally pork free because they have Muslim staff and children and it's just easier not to serve it at all (the food is mainly veggie in any event).
Are all the staff and children Muslim?
Amiinthewrong23 · 10/11/2021 19:48

I’m also Muslim too, I’d definitely bring it up with the nursery but I’m sure it could just be something as simple as someone entered it in wrong? Both my children go to a school which also serves pork options, so with sausages they do pork and veggie sausages, the school know on these occasions both my children are only allowed the veggie option,I ask my daughter every day what she has for lunch, my daughter is 6 so when she gets fed things such as Sausages or brown meat she always tells me she asks the dinner ladies if it’s pork because she’s not allowed pork, bless her making sure. They of course only give her the veggie option though they do know ( it’s good she understands and does ask tho) my youngest is 4 and I send him to nursery with packed lunch. Definitely talk to the nursery as it could have just been someone entered it wrong, but if you feel you can’t trust them anymore would pack lunch be an option? To put your mind at ease? I know how upsetting and frustrating it would be if he was accidentally given the wrong thing ( I’m sure that’s not the case though)

mynameiscalypso · 10/11/2021 19:49

@Allycott No but not serving pork isn't much of a hardship. They only serve meat once a week/once a fortnight as it is.

Greenrubber · 10/11/2021 19:54

@RampantIvy

The follow your heart cheese isn't too bad but as a cheese lover you might want to avoid it for a few months so you have forgotten what proper cheese tastes like!

I have not tried any cashew ones as my DD has a nut allergy I've heard good things about them tho

The violife butter is good tho

rrhuth · 10/11/2021 19:57
@mynameiscalypso, yes but it is a child. They shouldn’t be subject to strict religious rules, especially if a mistake was made by someone else.
You have been told already that it is for religious reasons.

I think the OP is well aware that her child is a child Hmm

So what would happen if a parent states they don't want their child to eat halal? Would an alternative be offered?

RampantIvy · 10/11/2021 20:01

That's unfortunate. I find that cream in cooked dishes upsets my stomach, but cashew cream (which I make myself) adds the creamy richness that dairy cream does, but without me having to spend all day in the bathroom.

rrhuth · 10/11/2021 20:03

@Allycott Yes, an alternative would be offered. The same rules apply to everyone.

Neither pork or non halal meat is permissable. So eating non halal meat is haram in the same way that pork is.

Sorry, l don't see how one is better than the other as both are not allowed for Muslims

CMZ2018 · 10/11/2021 20:17

😂😂

Sleeplessem · 10/11/2021 20:21

@Asi1. Meat slaughtered by the of the people of the book IS permissible.

Obviously halal should be consumed if it is readily available but there is a view (albeit a minority one but it’s actually the one I hold) that the UK is a Christian country (the majority of the population do identify as Christian in some way even if only culturally and the the country has a state religion) therefore the meat slaughtered (ethically) here is permissible as long as it’s not from the list of food we know is haram (pork, frog, crocodile etc)

Vixyboo · 10/11/2021 20:22
@AliceMcK why does it matter if your kids eat food you don’t like when they’re at nursery, you won’t see it?
Do you understand religion?

Ostryga · 10/11/2021 20:22

@MyDcAreMarvel

Your child isn’t allergic to pork and is too young to have a faith of their own. There is nothing to worry about and no harm was done, just explain you would like them to double check in future.
Fuck me. Talk about being the most ignorant, insular, awful human ever.
Vixyboo · 10/11/2021 20:24

No one owes anyone else an explanation! If someone doesn't want their child to eat a particular food then that's it. I do think they may have written it wrongly.

It would only be permissable when a stricy criteria is met, it being by the people of the book doesn't automatically make it permissable.

Asi1 · 10/11/2021 20:26

To its religious people of the book not those who do not practice their faith

JSL52 · 10/11/2021 20:28

@Almostmenopausal

What's wrong with pork?
They are Muslim
@CMZ2018

No parents really give their kids a choice when it comes to diet do they?
Veggies feed them veggie
Omnis feed them an omni diet
And vegans feed them a vegan diet

I'm vegan and so is the rest of my house my DD doesn't want to hurt animals so she's happy not to eat them
I wonder how many children would agree with your DD if they were able to make an informed choice. I remember my own DDs horror when she first made thd link between lamb and well...lambs.

BlusteringBoobies · 10/11/2021 20:40

Thank goodness all of this was resolved yesterday and many posts ago when the OP was told it was a keying error and the sausages were veggie.

I'm not sure how most of the further posts are relevant to the OP. She hasn't asked for opinions, she's asked how to deal with the nursery potentially not following dietary requirements (which has luckily been resolved).
