My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

No they’ve actually just updated it now surprisingly! I’m a bit shocked as well as I thought they would be on it till tomorrow

I'd be annoyed too OP.
We were massively clear that we only eat normal non-processed food and high welfare meat, so no Halal/Kosher/ vegan/veggie/low-fat(sugary) substitutes. Normal food. And we chose nurseries that only offered "home-cooked food"
DD especially kept being given bloody quorn.
But yes, they may have been beef, I could get beef sausages (with beef casings) for my jewish neighbours children when we had parties in London.

So much casual Islamophobia and general ignorance on this thread. It's pathetic.

@MyDcAreMarvel

Your child isn’t allergic to pork and is too young to have a faith of their own. There is nothing to worry about and no harm was done, just explain you would like them to double check in future.
Seems like it was sorted. But had they served pork then They wouldn’t have known if he was allergic or not. It would have been the first time they gave a particular food to that child which is a huge red flag. Pork allergies are very common in people who are allergic to cats.
Ohpulltheotherone · 09/11/2021 22:04

OP my LOs are veggie and quite often at handover they will say “X had sausage casserole or chicken curry” etc but I know they are fed veggie options, it’s just that they don’t always write it correctly on their forms.
Try not to worry, hopefully it was just an error how they’ve recorded it.

BonesInTheOcean · 09/11/2021 22:04
@mynameiscalypso, yes but it is a child. They shouldn’t be subject to strict religious rules, especially if a mistake was made by someone else.
Op is not angry with the child ffs

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/11/2021 22:05

@MidgeKiller1
Are you really that stupid or does it take practice?
I can see you got an A* for your rudeness classes.

Bambam2019 · 09/11/2021 22:06

If this did actually happen I can understand why you are not happy- it is important all dietary requirements are adhered to!
Having said that at my nursery, the boss updates the menu for the whole week in the app. She then changes it for individual children if they have a dietary requirement that means they will have something slightly different. For example, if it was beef lasagne, and 3 children were vegetarian, then she would then go in and edit the menu in their accounts separately and chance it to veg lasagne. I suspect what has happened here is that they haven’t edited the menu in your child’s profile to change it to a non pork option. Hope that makes sense! Probably if you ask them they will tell you he had veg sausage but it just hasn’t been edited yet! Hope it gets sorted!

Totally agree

FrasierCraneDay staff at my kids nursery are sometimes on line in the evening. I've had responses to emails and updates to the online system at strange hours.

@Catlover77

Why was my post deleted? The rspca have given their stance on halal, can we not discuss this on a forum?
Do you raise other ethical concerns about the meat and dairy industry as a whole? Same with kosher meat?

Hope so! Or you might be a racist

OPs question was what to do if they fed pork to her Muslim child not let’s debate ethical slaughter… there is a difference.

OP we’re Muslim too and I can’t lie to you I’d be pissed if my kids were served pork. I understand accidents do happen, but still wouldn’t be happy. Do you live in an area with a sizeable Muslim community? The larger city we live is has one but the specific area not so much, our DDs nursery was one of the only ones to serve halal meat, they don’t have pork at all on the menu. Depending on how happy you are with other aspects of the care, education etc it might be worthwhile looking at changing nursery, maybe there’s one that just doesn’t serve pork at all?

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 09/11/2021 22:09
@NoDecentHandlesLeft It's really not the same as an allergy. Religious dietary requirements should be respected definitely but it really isn't comparable to a potentially life threatening allergy.
I'm not saying it is... I am saying it's important that they follow dietary requirement procedures to prevent that very scenario.
Some posters are brushing it off as OK, bt it's really not OK to not check.
Luckily, seems to have been a clerical error anyway.

My post in response to Halal culling was also deleted. I have questioned why. It seems ridicolous not to be able to reply to questions on a public forum 🤷🏻‍♀️

thisyearsuckssofar · 09/11/2021 22:19

If it's live the nursery where I work, it's not the cook who writes in the app, but the playroom staff. Hopefully it was veggie sausage and the staff have selected the wing thing in app. I understand how you must feel. If it wasn't veggie, I'd speak to owner/manager and make clear this can't happen again.

thisyearsuckssofar · 09/11/2021 22:20

Sorry, just to read your update. Glad it was just an error and they corrected quickly.

Start another thread then? Dont goad islamaphobic comments onto one where a mum is asking what to do if her child’s dietary comments were overlooked
Coffeepants · 09/11/2021 22:25

OP I can understand your stress, we are strictly practicing Muslims and I would have a huge fit if my children were served non halal meat and especially pork. I have opted for veggie only meals despite their being a halal option at our school but recently switched over to packed lunches and feel so much better for it. Hope in your case it was just down to an admin error. I would still raise it with the nursery to take extra care when serving meals to your child.

So much racism and ignorance on this thread. Religious beliefs need to be respected and upheld. Muslims do not consume pig products as this is strictly forbidden.

flashy44 · 09/11/2021 22:27

Totally missing the point,the pork cant be eaten for religious reasons not because mum does not like them

Hey everyone - don’t bother replying to questions on this thread.Sleeplessness says it’s not allowed. Questions welcomed - no answers needed 👌

MangoIce · 09/11/2021 22:30

@AliceMcK

Wait and see it may have been the veggie version. If not like you I’d be fuming.

Not the same but there are certain foods I don’t want my children eating because they make me retch and I have a bit of a phobia about them. I turned up one day at nursery to find my dd eating one of them, I was fuming as now she loves the stuff.

What do you mean by this? What is your phobia and why can’t your child have this?
FranceTeam · 09/11/2021 22:30

Just to clarify, I do respect religious choices of eating, whether that be Jews or Muslims no eating pork. What I am saying, in this case, a child given pork accidentally is no big deal. It is like a child being given meat on Ash Wednesday in a catholic school, it doesn’t really matter and I am sure it was an accident, doesn’t count in religions the same as deliberately ignoring the rules.

Coffeepants · 09/11/2021 22:34

It absolutely is a huge deal. I would be making a compliant to the nursery, orated and anyone else I could. If you had any strict dietary requirements you would understand why this is a big deal. Accidental or not, it points to incompetence of the staff and negligence. If they can’t follow this dietary requirement, next they will accidentally serve a child with a nut allergy peanut butter? Make it make sense.

No @Garfunkle but if you have genuine questions on halal meat, what it is, What Muslim are permitted to eat, What constitutes halal and what doesn’t (it’s more than the slaughter), the sunnah (prophetic tradition) around eating meat, exceptions to mandate of halal meat etc, maybe it would be better to start another thread than to chance your posts getting deleted and /or lost in another thread? Or worse being mistaken for a racist islamaphobe who is looking for an excuse to Muslim bash, no?
