My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

OP posts:
ANameChangeAgain · 09/11/2021 20:38

Ask for clarification, but I think this is a really big deal.
I have a life long pork allergy, an accidental ingestion would have left me unable to breath as a young child. As the reason could be religion, ethical or allergy there is no excuse for mistakes like this, in some cases they could be fatal.

LetHimHaveIt · 09/11/2021 20:38

By beef noodles I presume you mean they had identifiable bits of beef in them? Because meat-flavoured noodles very very seldom contain meat.

As for the OP - dollars to doughnuts they entered it into the app incorrectly and actually gave him the veggie ones.

superram · 09/11/2021 20:41

Most schools use chicken sausage for this reason, I’d check first.

Starcaller · 09/11/2021 20:42

Definitely check but I would assume just an error inputting it on the app until being told otherwise. It would be an easy mistake to make when bulk updating things.

IDidntWearASmileToday · 09/11/2021 20:42

I work in childcare, a couple of weeks ago one of the new members of staff filled out the meals/snacks and just did them all the same despite the children being given the correct food in accordance with their needs. Hopefully that's just what has happened here OP!

Yep my kids school have done this numerous times, fed my vegetarian kids meat 🙄“

How old are they? (noticed you say school, not nursery).

Why? Checking to see if they should have known themselves, well my child is autistic and he limited speech/understanding does that answer your question?
RadioPenguin · 09/11/2021 20:44

It could well be an error with the app. Or the chikd was accidentally given pork by a staff member not in the know. You simply need to ask in the morning to clarify.

lemondrop21 · 09/11/2021 20:46

We're veggie, I'd be mega pissed if my dd was given meat.
Could be an error on the app though. Definitely ask tomorrow. Even if it was a new member of staff, it's not good enough

Almostmenopausal · 09/11/2021 20:46

What's wrong with pork?

Sorry yes, that should have said beef with noodles!
Almostmenopausal · 09/11/2021 20:49

Ah ignore previous post, I see you're veggie. It won't do him any harm OP, just have a word and explain you're vegetarian and ask them not to do it again.

Bluey18 · 09/11/2021 20:50

Multiple times my DD's creche have put "glass of milk" instead of water on her meals. She's very allergic so it would be very obvious if they had given her milk but they never had. I guess sometimes when they are recording meals on apps for the 16 kids in her room they go into auto pilot a bit. Hopefully it's something similar for your son OP.

I wondered about that. We had friends round recently who I thought didn't eat pork, so I bought chicken sausages. I checked the ingredients list very carefully to make sure they didn't contain pork.

It turned out that it wouldn't have mattered as they do eat pork. I made Mary Berry's Lasagne Express, which contains sausagemeat, and they loved it so much they asked for the recipe.

What is the food you can't bear @AliceMcK?

gogohm · 09/11/2021 20:51

@TurnUpTurnip
Once kids are school age, unless there's allergies and they have a special meal the kids get to choose their option, it's not the schools job to insist vegetarian kids take the veggie option to please parents! This whole scenario came up at my kids school and at 8 the judgement was that parents can't force kids to be vegetarian neither can parents force them to have the meat option, children choose

RacketeerRalph · 09/11/2021 20:52

@AliceMcK

Wait and see it may have been the veggie version. If not like you I’d be fuming.

Not the same but there are certain foods I don’t want my children eating because they make me retch and I have a bit of a phobia about them. I turned up one day at nursery to find my dd eating one of them, I was fuming as now she loves the stuff.

What a way to pass your food issues on to your child! You need help.
mynameiscalypso · 09/11/2021 20:53

I'd put money on it being an app issue. We get a verbal update and then an app update at the end of the day and they often are totally different in terms of what / how much DS has eaten.

Confused

Hopefully just a recording error OP.

Why would they do this. It literally is a waste of time, not true and worries the parents Hmm.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/11/2021 20:56

Wait and see what they say. All the sausages at DS's nursery were Halal chicken sausages.

FranceTeam · 09/11/2021 20:57

Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things?

My child didn’t choose, she’s autistic and has limited speech / understanding, the school asked if we have any dietary requirements, why ask then if they aren’t going to follow it 😕 they said she was given it “by mistake” because they lost her card

OP is Muslim. Of course it matters.
WakeUpLockie · 09/11/2021 20:59

Definitely check, our app is not accurate at all. They must surely copy and paste a lot of it. On the app they’ll say he ate everything but at pick up it’s always ‘he didn’t eat anything!’!

TurnUpTurnip · 09/11/2021 21:00

Also my other child was given a tuna sandwich again he didn’t ask for it, and didn’t eat it both confirmed by school and my son, again told it was a “mistake”

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 09/11/2021 21:02

I work in a school, I own the food permissions and allergy list. I’m a trained RME teacher and I’m absolutely the advocate for all religious consideration.

I’d be absolutely furious if that happened in my school and I’d be straight to SLT. Same as when non assembly children are taken to religious assemblies
