I’m off to see Paramore tomorrow - super excited!
what’s the best and worst gigs you’ve been to and why?

OP posts:

Best foofighters , pink and muse

Worst. Justin Bieber bloody awful. Came on eating a pop tart and was really rude to someone in the front row also dreadful live

AllTheGigs · 16/06/2023 15:06

i gues @ImBoilingJackie was in Camden with me :)

Springsteen (seeing him next week) has been good both times but in 1988 i was gutted (devastated - i will never ever let it go, ever) with an acoustic version of Born to Run. Who fucking does that?

I also think that you can have excellently brilliant stadium gigs (Muse last week in Köln) and tiny sweaty gigs which are absolutely rocking (GUN in the early 90s, Counting Crows in the early 90s in something the size of my living room etc etc)
Mid sized ones: INXS and Dire Straits at the late, lamented Sporthalle in Köln. Arenas (as in really big but enclosed) Kraftklub (every time, tbh) and Peter Gabriel (also stunning last week - was a fantastic weekend)

Then there is Pink Floyd. Blimey. Every time. If you can find a good tribute band (Brit Floyd are about the best but the Australian Pink Floyd Show are also good) it can be nearly as good.

so much music and bands to see, so little time.

Hotcrossbunhero · 16/06/2023 15:17

Best has to be Rammstein in Cardiff last year. Locals thought the stadium was on fire.

Worst: Kings of Leon at Old Trafford cricket ground about 20 yrs ago. Acoustics were terrible and I don’t want to talk about the toilets.

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/06/2023 16:06

"The worst one ever was probably Echo and the Bunnymen. Ian McCulloch was just an arse on stage for this particular show."

That wasn't an isolated incident; I've seen them a few times myself in the past, but stopped bothering for that, among other reasons.

Oh, that reminds me, I saw Cast at the O2 Academy in Liverpool last December. I went to the loo afterwards, and had to dodge water gushing out of one of the cubicles, from a broken toilet pan. What a utter fucking shit hole that place is.

I have such fond memories of Camden, AllTheGigs - just had a listen to some MO stuff earlier today and got a bit warm!

Restinggoddess · 16/06/2023 19:37

Proclaimers at Kelso last weekend - absolutely fantastic
On top form

I'm a member of their fan group (The Powderworkers) who are very active here in Germany - the Oils feature heavily in my life (we're having a big meet up in Utrecht next weekend, including a band to play Oils songs... come on over! @ImBoilingJackie . Highlight of that gig all the Aussies - so many Ausies - shouting "let it burn" during Truganini)

Was at a small (200 or so punters) sweaty gig last night, Stillmarillion if anyone likes Marillion tribute bands) Amazing atmosphere.

Yeah, I'm in the powderworkers group too. Unfortunately don't have a passport currently so can't join you in Utrecht.😥

Deescot · 08/07/2023 08:40

Best Joe Bonamassa in Glasgow last year. Worst Bay City Rollers (many moons ago).

DustyLee123 · 08/07/2023 08:45

I saw Whitesnake in 2015 and his voice was awful.

@ImBoilingJackie - it's in Nottingham next year... unfortunately the ad hoc group The Oil Spills are very unlikely to do another gig
</Off Topic>

not in the top 10 but The Black Keys a few weeks ago were stonking. Must see them again.

Nottingham would be do-able! I shall keep an eye out for the info.

Best (in no particular order):

Ash (Manchester Apollo, Decemeber 1999). My first ever gig. Was absolutely mesmerized.

The Charlatans (Delamere Forest, 2009ish)

The Charlatans (MEN Arena, 2008?)

Madness 2009 (GMEX, refuse to call it Manchester Central or the MEN the AO Arena lol)

Future Islands (Manchester Cathedral 2014/5)

Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Angels and Airwaves (loved them but not so good live and got various stuff flung at them!), The Subways and Eahles of Death Metal. Thought I remembered the Manic Street Preachers being there but that may have been another gig? (Lancashire County Cricket Club 18th June 2006)

Muse MEN Arena (2005 or 2006 or something haha)

Heavens (Manchester Club Academy 2007 or something, memory ia terrible)

Alkaline Trio (Liverpool Echo Arena I think, 2007ish)

Funeral for a Friend (Manchester Apollo 2007ish)

There are so many, many more.

Worst:

So wanted to love Placebo (GMEX 2008/9) but they were better on CD! Their 2006 gig at the MEN was sooo much better.

The Cure (Leeds 2022) was slightly disappointing. Have liked them since being young but I think they played too many new songs! They can't play all the old uns though I suppose.

There will be loads more but posting before it gets lost.

Tentaculoose · 17/10/2023 01:52

The Feeling at various Manc Academies and The Manc Apollo 2006-2008ish.

Oscar and The Wolf, Aurora, The Chemical Brothers, Sum 41 and others (Sziget Festival, Budapest, 2016)

Feel like I've seen Gogol Bordello and loved it but may have imagined that.

Hayseed Dixie at some point in a Manc Academy were very entertaining.

Extremely jealous of the poster who saw Linkin Park's entire Hybrid Theory set and people who have seen Feeder, Pink, The Killers and Rammstein.

Tentaculoose · 17/10/2023 21:26

In that mammoth list I also missed The Editors (Sziget). And the editing it would seem... ;)

GuyFawkesDay · 17/10/2023 21:32

Editors.

No 'the'

SnotSnotSnottySnot · 19/10/2023 08:14

Rammstein. Just booked tickets for the tour next year. Again!

Tentaculoose · 20/10/2023 03:05

@GuyFawkesDay, apologies maam 😉

MissMarplesNiece · 20/10/2023 09:24

@SnotSnotSnottySnot I'd love to see Rammstein.

Prince was the best!

Best ever 💜

Alltheusernamesaretakennow · 20/10/2023 10:02

Love Prince 💜 - excellent live! Was fortunate to see him 4 times, plus an afterparty.

Worst was Andy Bell (Erasure) at Rewind South this year - out of tune after a bottle of tequila. Was supposed to be the headliner! (on Youtube!)

Oh no re Andy Bell. Saw him twice with Erasure in their heyday and he/ they were incredible. They were meant to be doing a tour in 2022 which we had tickets for but they cancelled without giving a reason. Maybe just as well.......

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 21/10/2023 21:28

Best - Live Aid
Worst - Stevie Wonder

JustMeAndTheFish · 20/03/2024 19:50

Best: Genesis/Bruce Springsteen/Coldplay/Van Morrison/Ed Sheeran…. too many to pick just one.
Worst: maybe Siouxie and the Banshees with just one banshee 🤣
